Bob Seger turns 80: Here are his 8 biggest chart toppers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan has more than its fair share of influential musicians. There's Madonna and Eminem. There are rockers like Alice Cooper, The White Stripes and Grand Funk Railroad. And, of course, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and 'the Motown Sound' the defined R&B for decades. But none of them feel quite like home the same way Bob Seger does. Sign up for the News 8 daily newsletter The 'Ramblin', Gamblin' Man' turned 80 years old Tuesday. Born in Detroit and raised in Ann Arbor, Seger and his various bands became one of the state's top acts throughout the 1970s and '80s. The now-retired Seger has sold more than 50 million records and had 31 songs hit the Billboard Hot 100. In honor of his 80th birthday, these are his eight biggest chart toppers. OLD TIME ROCK & ROLL Arguably his most famous song, 'Old Time Rock & Roll' spent the most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 — 22. It was first released on his 10th studio album, 'Stranger in Town.' The Recording Industry Association of America named it to its 'Songs of the Century' list. SHAME ON THE MOON 'Shame on the Moon' came in a close second. It spent 21 weeks on the Hot 100, one week shy of 'Old Time Rock & Roll.' However, while the 1979 single peaked at No. 28. 'Shame on the Moon' reached No. 2. NIGHT MOVES Likewise, 'Night Moves' also spent 21 weeks on the Hot 100 chart. It debuted on Dec. 11, 1976, and went on to peak at No. 4. (Getty Images) TRYIN' TO LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU Seger's fourth highest-rated chart topper is a cover. 'Tryin' To Live My Life Without You' was originally written by Eugene Frank Williams and popularized by soul singer Otis Clay. Seger's cover spent 19 weeks on the Hot 100 and peaked at No. 5. SHAKEDOWN 'Shakedown' was Seger's only No. 1 hit. It spent 18 weeks on the Hot 100. Seger helped bring a little more Detroit flavor to 'Beverly Hills Cop II.' The film features Eddie Murphy as a Detroit police detective who is a fish out of water while working a case in California. STILL THE SAME Nos. 6 through 8 show Seger's softer side, which is featured in his arguably more popular songs. 'Still the Same' hit the Hot 100 in May of 1978 and stayed there for 18 weeks, peaking at No. 4. AGAINST THE WIND 'Against the Wind' was one of four Seger songs to hit the Top 100 in 1980, along with 'You'll Accomp'ny Me,' 'Fire Lake' and 'The Horizontal Bop.' 'Against the Wind' spent 17 weeks on the Hot 100 chart and peaked at No. 5. WE'VE GOT TONIGHT 'We've Got Tonight' is one of the hits off of 'Stranger in Town.' It sold more than 6 million copies, the highest total aside from Seger's 1994 greatest hits compilation. The album also includes 'Old Time Rock & Roll,' 'Hollywood Nights,' 'Still The Same' and 'Feel Like a Number.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has a Mariah Carey problem

The resume speaks for itself — 19 No. 1 hits, a vocal range for the ages, a blueprint for the modern pop diva and that holiday song that won't go away. Why it matters: Mariah Carey is the latest female artist to be surprisingly snubbed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an institution that has struggled to honor women to the same extent it's honored men. The big picture: The Rock Hall has inducted nearly 400 artists since its inception in 1986, including about 80 women as individual artists or members of female-fronted groups. The museum will add Cyndi Lauper, Meg White (of The White Stripes), Salt-N-Pepa and Carol Kaye to that list as part of the class of 2025. How it works: To be eligible, an artist had to release their first official recording at least 25 years before induction. Each year, a committee of music industry bigwigs creates a ballot. Then a voting pool of more than 1,000 music historians, journalists and previous inductees selects the honorees. 💭 Troy's thought bubble: This is all, of course, subjective. However, I can't see how Carey isn't more deserving than 2025 inductees like Chubby Checker, The White Stripes or Bad Company. One argument against Carey would come from rock purists who think the Hall should exclusively honor guitar-driven music. But that didn't stop Outkast from earning induction this year. What's next: Carey has been eligible since 2016. History suggests she will be inducted, but will likely wait longer than her male counterparts. By the numbers: Of the 56 acts that have been first-ballot Hall of Famers only six have included women. Believe it or not, acts like Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Ruth Brown, The Supremes, Fleetwood Mac, Joan Jett and Janet Jackson needed multiple nominations to earn induction.

'American Idol' contestant sings James Taylor's hit song 'Fire and Rain'

An " American Idol" contestant impressed legendary singer-songwriter and musician James Taylor with a rendition of one of Taylor's hit songs Sunday night. During Sunday night's episode of "American Idol," contestant Thunderstorm Artis took the stage and sang Taylor's "Fire and Rain." Artis delivered a moving performance with his guitar, which "Idol" judge Lionel Richie called "a masterful job." "You absolutely turned into your song," Richie said. Fellow "Idol" judge Carrie Underwood also praised Artis' take on Taylor's song, saying, "Well done on unabashedly singing it your way." Judge Luke Bryan added, "It had hints of James Taylor but a lot of you. Way to be you!" Artis sang "Fire and Rain" for the show's "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" episode, in which contestants took on iconic songs from Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legends. The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees were also revealed during the show. Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, Salt-N-Pepa, and Bad Company were among those who were announced as inductees. Taylor, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000, was the guest mentor for all of this week's "Idol" contestants and offered advice to each of them prior to their performances. During their one-on-one session, Taylor described Artis' rendition of "Fire and Rain" as "beautiful" and advised him to keep eye contact with the audience. "You did a version of that I have not heard," he added. "Really unique." Taylor also said that he sees Artis as "a version of me." Artis, meanwhile, told Taylor that his music had "shaped" him as an individual. "I've connected with your music my entire life," Artis added. "Thank you for being an inspiration." At the end of the night, Artis was saved and moved on to the Top 12. Desmond Roberts and Amanda Barise were eliminated. The competition continues Monday night with the Top 12 performing songs inspired by iconic "American Idol" moments, honoring the show's history. Fantasia Barrino, who won "American Idol" on season 3, will return to the stage.
