Julia Garner defends her role as Shalla-Bal in Fantastic Four, fans come to her defence and trash Marvel's CGI instead
This year has been a rollercoaster for superhero films. James Gunn officially took over the DC Universe and released a new Superman that's been met with mixed reactions. Over at Marvel, fans are still riding high on the unexpected success of Thunderbolts*, a gritty anti-hero ensemble that's been praised for bringing fresh energy to the genre. But now, all eyes are on Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot—especially after the reveal that a woman is now playing the Silver Surfer. Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal Actor Julia Garner, best known for her roles in Ozark (2017) and The Wolf Man, is stepping into the role of the Silver Surfer. Some fans weren't thrilled about the gender switch, questioning why a traditionally male character wasn't being kept that way. But Garner? She's unfazed. Speaking to the BBC at the London premiere of Fantastic Four, the 31-year-old actor addressed the backlash head-on: 'I said, 'I'm just going to still do my job,'' she said, choosing to focus on the work rather than the noise. Garner also pointed out that her character is not a direct reimagining of Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer, but a different take altogether. 'Also, it's Shalla-Bal, so it's different,' she added. For those unfamiliar with the comics, Shalla-Bal first appeared in The Silver Surfer #1 in 1968. She's often portrayed as a female counterpart or love interest to Norrin Radd. This means that Garner's casting isn't a total rewrite, but rather a dive into a lesser-explored character from the source material. Netizens react Now, there were definitely a bunch of comments that trolled Garner's casting. 'Is there reason the more iconic version was not used?' was one comment on X. Another said, 'Poor herald choice to open the franchise with.' One more comment read, 'No. She is a terrible character. They didn't wanna a male herald. Fine. Pick a good female one. They couldn't even do that.' And since female characters taking on roles traditionally played by men are often met with resistance from cult audiences, it's no surprise Garner feels defensive about hers. But after a thorough scroll on social media, it's noteworthy that many of the comments were quite supportive of Garner's role, even going so far as to research the origin of her character, Shalla-Bal. 'Not gender swapped. It's Noran Radd's wife. Comic accurate,' said one. Another claimed, 'Comic accurate so the only people who care are outing themselves as fake fans.' One more comment said, 'People are unnecessarily upset about her casting. She is a great choice, and none of us has even watched the movie yet. Also, the Silver Surfer has a female version in the comics, and she is playing Shalla-Bal. Those who are complaining should take some time to read the comics before jumping to conclusions.' Furthermore, many are claiming that the outrage is not about the gender-swap, it's about the CGI. 'It's not about the Gender swap. It's the CGI,' claimed one comment on X. 'Only issue I see is how awful the CGI is- I can't believe that CGI seems to actually have gotten worse,' read another comment. About the film The upcoming film will mark Fantastic Four's official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set against a retro-futuristic 1960s backdrop, the movie will follow the group as they embark on some of their earliest missions. As for the cast, it's stacked with big names from the industry. Pedro Pascal stars as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (The Thing). Ralph Ineson plays Galactus, with Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich rounding out the ensemble. The movie is set to release on July 25.

'England's prettiest village' is 'like North Korea' as drones snoop on homes
People living in 'England's prettiest village' say tourists are unleashing swarms of drones and 'spying' on their homes - leaving them feeling like they 'live in North Korea' Residents of a picturesque village described as England's 'most beautiful' say they are being terrorised by drones flying over their homes - and have compared it to living in North Korea. Castle Combe in the Cotswolds attracts tourists from all over the world thanks to its charming rows of cottages and enchanting winding streets - but a new trend among some visitors has left many locals feeling "spied on" and worried for their own safety. An increasing number of day-trippers are said to be bringing drones with them to capture aerial footage of the Wiltshire village to share on social media, putting them at odds with villagers and even reportedly leading to the police being called on multiple occasions. One resident, Hilary Baker, told the MailOnline: "You feel like you're being spied on, like you're living in North Korea." It comes amid a rise in reports of other invasive and unwelcome behaviours from tourists, and Hilary said others had been spotted using using suction-cups to attach their phones to cottage windows to take photograph of themselves. On other occasions, nuisance visitors are said to have peeked through windows, used drones to observe villagers while they're in the bath, and even peeked through their letterboxes to have a look inside. Some residents have now taken to putting up 'no drones' signs in their windows, though this is not thought to have halted the trend. Villager Draven McConville said he had stepped in on multiple occasions in to ask people not to use the devices, including one man who had launched one from the bottom of his driveway. While many of these resulted in "reasonable conversations" which saw the drone users pack them away, other visitors have subjected him to "verbal abuse for no real reason", he told the BBC. A sign has also been put up in the village's car park asking visitors not to fly drones within 50 metres of people's property. Castle Combe is often hailed as one of Britain's most idyllic villages, and its rustic charm has seen it act as the setting for a number of popular blockbusters, including Stardust, The Wolf Man, and Steven Spielberg's War Horse. Its unique weavers' cottages are constructed from local stone, and stand largely unchanged from down the centuries as a result of strict building regulations. Modern fixtures like satellite dishes and external wiring on house exteriors are forbidden, and tight planning permissions restrictions apply to the size of extensions and garden buildings. The village, which was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, prospered the success of 'Castlecombe', a red and white cloth that was in high demand in markets across the south of England.

Horror Thriller ‘Wolf Man' Coming To Streaming On Peacock This Week
Christopher Abbott in "Wolf Man." Wolf Man — a remake of the Universal Studios Monsters classic The Wolf Man starring Lon Chaney Jr. — begins streaming on Peacock this week. Directed by Leigh Whannell, who directed the 2020 remake of Universal's monster movie classic The Invisible Man, Wolf Man opened in theaters on Jan. 17. Julia Garner (Ozark) and Christopher Abbott (Kraven the Hunter) star in Wolf Man as Charlotte and Blake, a couple with a strained marriage who travel with their young daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth) to a remote house in the Oregon mountains that belonged to Blake's late estranged father, Grady (Sam Jaeger). While the family is trying to locate the abode, Blake is clawed by a werewolf and soon begins to physically transform and exhibit attributes and senses that are not human. Before too long, Blake turns into a werewolf himself, which puts Charlotte and Ginger in grave danger. Wolf Man will begin streaming on Peacock on Friday, April 18, according to the streaming service. Peacock offers a pair of streaming package options. Viewers can get an ad-based package for $7.99 per month or $79 per year or an ad-free package for $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. Universal Studios, of course, produced the original version of The Wolf Man with Lon Chaney Jr., in 1941 and the character or other werewolf interations appeared in several follow-up movies including a the 2010 remake of The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins. The new version of Wolf Man differs though, in the pacing of how Christopher Abbott's Blake transforms into the werewolf and the manner in which it happens. For that reason, Julia Garner told Screen Rant in a January interview, the transformation is what makes the scares more effective. 'It's more scary when it is a slower transition because I still recognized little elements of Chris. His skin and his hair was changing, but he still had his eyes and I think if you want to make anything scarier just go with something familiar,' Garner told Screen Rant. 'That's why they always put dolls in horror films because you see a doll, like, almost every day," Garner added. "So I think that this Wolf Man is almost scarier for that reason — that there's something familiar, that Charlotte still sees her husband, but he's not there anymore.' Wolf Man has earned $20.7 million domestically and $14.1 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $34.6 million against a $25 million production budget before prints and advertising, per Variety. The film received a 50% 'rotten' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 260 reviews and a 56% 'rotten' score based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings from audience members. Rated R, Wolf Man arrives on streaming video on demand on Peacock on Friday.
