Thornhill Manor celebrates 80-year-old dance teacher's milestone birthday

When many people reach 80, they start slowing down. Not Thea van Tongeren. She's doing just the opposite. The energetic octogenarian has been teaching line dancing at Thornhill Manor for 20 years – and shows no sign of stopping. In July, residents and friends gathered for a tea party to celebrate Thea's milestone birthday, honouring the woman who has inspired so many to stay active and engaged. 'When I moved to South Africa, I needed time to adapt to a completely new life. 'By then, my age didn't allow me to do jazz dancing anymore, but when I moved into Thornhill Manor, I discovered line dancing – and with my background, it was perfect.' Her motto is simple: 'As long as you can walk, you can do line dancing. Big steps or small steps, it doesn't matter – the music will stimulate you to do what your body can handle.' Today, her classes welcome everyone from beginners to seasoned dancers. The oldest participant is 85, and not long ago, an 89-year-old took part – even performing on stage. For Thea, inspiration flows both ways. 'When relatives and friends see what is still possible at their age, that inspires,' she said. This year's two-night concert, set for November 19 and 20, promises an evening of western boots, lively music and beautifully choreographed routines, all in a warm, welcoming community atmosphere – complete with decorated halls and shared snacks. It combines a full-body workout with music therapy, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, support cognitive function, and even aid in physical rehabilitation. Thea's tips for living a full life as you age: • Keep physically active as long as you can. • Stay interested in family, community and the world. • Maintain your health with a moderate lifestyle. With about 30 members and counting, Thornhill Manor's line dancing group continues to thrive – a testament to Thea's passion, energy and dedication.
