Bernardeschi double as Toronto hit Montreal for six

Former Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi scored twice as Toronto FC romped to a 6-1 win at Canadian rivals Montreal in Major League Soccer on Saturday. Canadian forward Theo Corbeanu added a brace as Toronto took full advantage of the Eastern Conference's bottom club being reduced to 10 men in the 21st minute when Joel Waterman was sent off. Toronto were 1-0 up at that point thanks to a goal thanks to a fine breakaway goal from Trinidad international Tyrese Spicer. Waterman was shown a straight red card for his late, lunging challenge to bring down Norwegian Ola Brynhildsen who was surging goalwards and from then on it was one way traffic. Bernardeschi doubled the lead in the 30th minute with a confident right-foot finish and then Brynhildsen made it 3-0 with a tap-in after good work from Maxime Dominguez. Montreal hit the woodwork twice before half-time but Toronto put the game beyond any doubt when Bernardeschi produced a superb solo strike into the far corner to make it four. After Montreal pulled a goal back through their Italian-Albanian striker Giacomo Vrioni, substitute Corbeanu added two goals to complete the rout. "Obviously, this is a tough place to play, a big rival, and I thought the performance was very mature, very composed, and through some good patient play we were able to find some really good opportunities," said Toronto head coach Robin Fraser. "Make no mistake to go down a man early, put Montreal in a very, very difficult situation. But as we've all seen at some point, just to be a man up doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have success. "Fede (Bernardeschi) was so dangerous almost every time he touched it," he added. New York City enjoyed a 2-0 derby win at Citi Field against the New York Red Bulls taking the lead in the 13th minute thanks to a brilliant long-range effort from Alonso Martinez. Red Bulls keeper Carlos Coronel then made an awful error in the 50th minute to gift the ball to Martinez on the edge of the box and he fed Maxi Moralez who shot into the unguarded goal. Later on Saturday, the Columbus Crew host FC Cincinnati in a Ohio derby featuring third against first in the Eastern Conference. 'Rivalry weekend' continues on Sunday with Inter Miami hosting Orlando City and then the 'El Trafico' clash between struggling Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles FC. sev/rcw

Lorenzo Insigne scores goal, sets up another as Toronto FC defeats D.C. United

Article content TORONTO — Lorenzo Insigne scored his first MLS goal in 11 months and set up another as Toronto FC defeated D.C. United 2-0 on Saturday for its first home win this season. Article content Article content It was one-way traffic in the first half with Toronto launching 14 shots (including five on target) to one for D.C., whose off-target shot came in stoppage time. But TFC's goal-scoring drought continued until the 49th minute when a diving Insigne headed home Theo Corbeanu's cross on a rapid-fire Toronto counter-attack. Article content Article content It was the first league goal for the 33-year-old Italian since June 15, 2024, in a 4-1 loss to Chicago. Insigne, whose US$15.4-million salary was second only to Miami's Lionel Messi in MLS last season, now has 15 goals in 62 career MLS appearances. Article content Toronto didn't even bother to dress insigne for the first four games of the season, looking to unload him. But he earned his keep Saturday Article content Toronto (2-6-4) had not scored at home in league play in 488 minutes, dating back to Deandre Kerr's goal March 15 in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire. TFC came into the game 0-3-2 in league play at BMO Field this season and had not won there since a 2-1 decision over Austin FC on Sept. 14. Article content Insigne also set up the second goal in the 66th minute, firing in a dangerous cross that sliding defender Lucas Bartlett put into his own net, attempting to prevent the ball reaching Toronto forward Ola Brynhildsen. Article content D.C. United (3-6-3) tried to rally after going down 2-0 but Toronto 'keeper Sean Johnson was up to the task before an announced crowd of 20,236. Article content With fellow Italian Federico Bernardeschi showing a spring in his step and Insigne on the mark, Toronto finally bared its teeth on offence. Article content Article content More than a few missed it. Article content Supporters groups, who normally populate the south stand of BMO Field gathered outside the northeast corner of the stadium in protest as the game kicked off. They carried a banner that read 'Empty Words Empty Seats,' a seeming reference to the message earlier this week to season ticket-holders from MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley, who urged fans to stick with the team as its rebuild continues. Article content Toronto was coming off back-to-back shutout home losses to NYCFC and New England that snapped a four-game unbeaten run (1-0-3). Article content After going unbeaten in its first four games (1-0-3) of the season, which included a 2-2 draw with visiting Toronto in the season opener, D.C. lost four straight during which it was outscored 14-2. But the team seemed to have found its footing ahead of the visit north of the border, winning three of its last four (3-1-0) in all competitions.
