Thibang Phete returns: Kaizer Chiefs or another PSL club?
Thibang Phete, affectionately known as 'Cafu', is preparing for a highly anticipated return to South African football after spending the past decade showcasing his talent in Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, and most recently, Iceland. The 31-year-old versatile midfielder, equally comfortable as a centre-back, left the country in 2014 without ever featuring in the local top flight. Back then, his only domestic experience came through Milano United FC in the lower leagues, having developed under Farouk Khan at the Stars of Africa Academy. Currently completing a short-term contract at Icelandic Premier League side IF Vestri, Phete hinted at a strong desire to return home for personal reasons. 'Things have been good so far, I'm trying to adapt to the weather [in Iceland], but I'm very grateful for the opportunity they [IF Vestri] gave me,' Phete said, as per FARPost . 'I have considered coming back home, especially now with having a new family, my decision will always be surrounding them. Even coming to Iceland was a bit difficult for them, but I had to make the sacrifice.' After parting ways with Portuguese outfit GD Chaves in August 2024 while nursing an injury, Phete joined IF Vestri to rebuild his fitness. As first reported, Kaizer Chiefs showed interest first, however talks failed to progress. The frontrunners to secure Phete's signature now appear to be Sekhukhune United. All signs point to Babina Noko as his next destination, according to FARPost . The move would mark his long-awaited debut in the Betway Premiership. With his Icelandic stint ending this month, Phete is expected to confirm his next move within days. A return to local football would not only reunite him with his roots. But also offer a platform to shine on the domestic and international stages once again. Will Thibang Phete sign for Chiefs or Sekhukhune? Kaizer Chiefs set to sign Bafana Bafana star and free agent
Kaizer Chiefs look set to land another experienced defender, with Bafana Bafana international Thibang Phete on the verge of joining the club. The 30-year-old centre-back, currently a free agent, has emerged as a key target as Amakhosi continue to bolster their squad with overseas-based South African talent. Having already secured the services of Nkanyiso Shinga from Portuguese side FC Alverca to fill the gap at left-back, Chiefs have now turned their attention to central defence. Phete, who recently returned to top-flight football after a lengthy injury spell, fits the bill perfectly. Phete rejoined professional football in March, signing with Icelandic top-flight outfit IF Vestri. Despite his ten-month absence from the pitch, he quickly made his mark, featuring in seven of their twelve league matches this season. Previously, Phete played in Portugal for GD Chaves during the 2023/2024 campaign. However, his one-year stint came to an end after his contract expired, leaving him free to negotiate with new suitors. Now, with no transfer fee required and his fitness proven, Phete stands out as a smart and seasoned acquisition for Kaizer Chiefs. Phete's international credentials add significant weight to the deal. He has earned four caps for South Africa, bringing not only technical ability but also composure and leadership to a backline that has undergone considerable changes in recent months. A well-placed source revealed the latest developments. 'At the moment it looks like it could happen, talks have begun… it's looking positive and Chiefs might have met Phete's realistic demands, not done yet but close.' Kaizer Chiefs have clearly adopted a strategy focused on repatriating quality South African players from overseas leagues. With Shinga basically signed and Phete nearing a deal, the club shows no signs of slowing down in their pursuit of a stronger, more balanced squad. Will Thibang Phete make Kaizer Chiefs better?
