Madras High Court seeks report from Tamil Nadu government on illegal kidney trade

The Madras High Court on Tuesday heard a petition seeking a CBI investigation into an illegal kidney sale racket, citing inaction by state PIL, filed by advocate Saktheeswaran of Paramakudi, highlighted the exploitation of poor workers from powerloom units and dyeing factories in Pallipalayam, Namakkal to the petition, middlemen, medical professionals, and hospital authorities coerced these workers into 'donating' kidneys illegally, offering Rs 5 to 10 lakh per organ. The act, the petitioner said, violates the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, The petitioner claimed the Tamil Nadu government had not taken proper action and questioned whether a fair probe could be conducted by state police, alleging political involvement. He urged that the case be transferred to the CBI, similar to the Thiruppuvanam Ajith Kumar custodial death claimed that Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Tiruchi were found to have committed serious medical malpractices and kidney thefts. He also alleged that both hospitals were connected to political figures belonging to the ruling SM Subramaniam and Arul Murugan expressed shock over the revelations.'It is barbaric for doctors to remove organs from patients and sell them for personal gain. The government has a duty to protect the right to life of poor and vulnerable people,' the bench court directed the Health Secretary and the Director of Rural Health Services to submit a report detailing actions taken regarding the kidney trade and measures to prevent such illegal activities.
