It Starts On The Page (Drama): Read ‘Paradise' Episode 1 Script 'Wildcat Is Down' With Foreword By Dan Fogelman

Editor's note: Deadline's It Starts on the Page (Drama) features 10 standout drama series scripts in 2025 Emmy contention. In his follow-up to his acclaimed NBC family drama This Is Us, Dan Fogelman switched genres — and mixed genres, too — with Hulu's Paradise, a political thriller that incorporates elements of apocalyptic science fiction. It marked Fogelman's first series creation for streaming where he already had a hit with Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, which he executive produces. More from Deadline 'Paradise' Renewed For Second Season By Hulu 'Paradise' Star Sterling K. Brown Teases 'Exploration Of The World Outside The Bunker' In Season 2 – Contenders TV Jessica Simpson On Working With Kim Kardashian On 'All's Fair': "She Did All The Lawyer Talk, I Did All The Whining" It also reunited Fogelman and his Emmy-winning This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, who headlines Paradise as Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins. Season 1's official logline sets up the pilot episode, 'Wildcat Is Down,' written by Fogelman and directed by his frequent collaborators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who also helmed the This Is Us pilot: Paradise takes place in a serene community inhabited by some of the world's most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs, and a high-stakes investigation unfolds. In addition to setting up the series, in its final seconds, the premiere serves the first of Paradise's many jaw-dropping twists. Here is the script for 'Wildcat is Down' with an intro by Fogelman. In it, he reveals how a kernel of an idea he got more a decade ago from a loud construction noise during his drive home from a business meeting with a powerful Hollywood type led to Paradise. About a year after This Is Us ended, I started feeling the familiar itch to get off my ass and write something new for television. I mused on multiple ideas but kept returning to a specific kernel of a notion – a notion I'd had over a decade backstory: As a much younger writer I once found myself in a general meeting with a powerful player in our industry – a person of great reach, resource, and wealth. As I chatted with him (or her, I'll never tell) I was struck by the design (and size) of their office, the seemingly infinite reach of their rolodex and power. While that person talked to me, my mind wandered and I started wondering if I was in the room with my first ever billionaire.I started musing how many people worked to make that person's life run smoothly.I was young(er), I was nervous, I don't remember what we talked on the drive home, a large crane at a nearby construction site dropped something. There was a loud BOOM. I jumped, then realized this wasn't a mass casualty event… simply a loud everyday construction I thought about the person I'd just met with – this person of seemingly unearthly wealth and power. I thought of all the people who worked to serve that person and I wondered: 'If the sh*t ever hit the fan for real, wouldn't those people all run to their own people? Wouldn't they abandon the person they are employed to serve?I started thinking of the interplay of those in power and those who serve them. I started imagining someone whose job it was to literally take a bullet for a person in immense power – a secret service agent to a President. I started thinking about billionaires, and the strange power their wealth provides, and I started wondering… what if the loud BOOM I'd heard had been real. And what if people with immense power knew it was coming, and had the time to gather their resources and plan for it… so that when it happened, they wouldn't be left in the lurch like the rest of us.I started imagining a pilot with a late surprise – one that revealed that the Presidential murder mystery the audience thought they were watching, was really something then I sat on the idea for over a fast forward ten or so years, I was getting that post This Is Us writing itch, and I returned to idea. I wrote the screenplay first, refusing to acknowledge even to myself that I was clearly writing the lead agent role for Sterling K. Brown, and refusing to commit to it as a TV series until I sat with my producing partner Jess Rosenthal and my two friends (and eventual senior writer/producers) John Hoberg and Scott Weinger to chat with experts and figure out what exactly this series was beyond the I had that, we shared it with our supportive partners at 20th, Disney, and Hulu — and then my old pals Sterling K. Brown, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, and Steve Beers — and we were off to the races… shooting an idea that I'd been thinking about for over a decade… an idea born out of a meeting with a rich guy (or gal) and one hell of a loud boom. Chicago P.D. Wedding First Look: Burgess and Ruzek Finally Tie the Knot

At long last, the big day has arrived for 'Burzek' and their loyal 'shippers. As things escalate and Reid shows himself to be a formidable opponent, Voight finds himself battling his own instincts,' showrunner Gwen Sigan previously told TVLine. 'Meanwhile, Ruzek and Burgess' wedding fast approaches, Chapman grows closer to Voight, and Torres faces the emotional fall out of his actions.' Despite all the tension with Reid, Burgess and Ruzek's nuptials appear to be a happy affair in the below first look, with both the bride and groom smiling brightly. And Burgess is practically glowing as she walks down the aisle to her future hubby as Voight looks on with pride. Given the serious nature of the show, which often deals with dark and gritty cases, star Marina Squerciati wasn't sure how her hopes for the wedding would fit into series. 'I don't know, because I feel like it's, like, flowers and frills and beach, and that's, like, just everything Chicago P.D. is not,' she told TVLine last November. 'I think everyone's unsure how we're going to accomplish this thing that the fans have waited for for 12 years and still respect the tone of the show. Because what I'm thinking is very much like This Is Us. Like, it's not respectful of the tone.' But it looks like the series found a way to deliver an emotional, traditional ceremony in a church, compared to the show's previous impromptu courthouse wedding between Halstead and Upton. fans, did you ever think this day would come? Mandy Moore slams LA County for 'nonsensical' red tape preventing the city's rebuild after fires

Mandy Moore called out LA County over the "meaningless protocol" preventing communities from rebuilding after fires destroyed thousands of structures in January. The "This is Us" star has found it "impossible" to rebuild her home. "Thanks, LA County for making it as frustrating and impossible to rebuild after the fires as possible," Moore wrote in an Instagram story on May 6, according to Us Weekly. "Shouldn't be surprised but it's mind boggling the red tape and hoops they're putting us all through." "It's maddening and heartless … the endless hoops and meaningless protocol LA County is asking of fire victims who want to rebuild and get their lives back," she added. "Wasn't California going to make this as easy as possible?" The actress had more to say on May 8, writing, "6 permits issued in Altadena. 10,000 structures burned down. The pace is glacial. The nonsensical red tape they have in place that prevents those of that are ready to rebuild is just mind boggling." "And I say this as someone with privilege: we have insurance, plans, a contractor, etc… everyone deserves an advocate and a system that is streamlined and supports success. People want to get the ball rolling and start to piece their lives back together. "We JUST finished building one of the structures that burned down [this past] November. We have all the plans and permits ready to go and we were just told we have to resubmit everything and start over," she explained. "For no reason. LA County should want success stories right now but instead, they're focused on antiquated protocol. This is why people are leaving California in droves. They make it impossible." Moore's Altadena home was partially salvaged after the January fires. "Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now. It's not livable but mostly intact," the "Tangled" star shared on Jan. 9. "We lost Taylor and Griffin's studio with every instrument and piece of equipment they've ever owned," she added. "We lost our garage and back house. Everyone we know lost everything. Every house on our street is gone." At the time, Moore admitted that she was feeling "weird survivor's guilt" following the LA fires. "We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support. Thanks for everyone for checking on us and offering us help. Altadena strong." While their home didn't fully burn down, Moore found out in February that the contents inside were "a near-total loss" due to the proximity of the fires.

Mandy Moore SLAMS LA County for 'making it impossible' to rebuild her home four months after deadly fires

has slammed Los Angeles County for 'making it impossible' to rebuild her Altadena home that was partially destroyed in the devastating fires that broke out four months earlier. The This Is Us actress, 41, had nearly completed renovating the house she shared with husband Taylor Goldsmith and their three children Gus, four, Ozzie, two, and baby Louise when the deadly infernos broke out on January 7 amid strong winds. While the structure of their abode was still intact, the star explained in a past post that the belongings inside 'are a near total loss' due to the surrounding fires. In an emotional message to her followers on Tuesday, Moore penned on her Instagram stories: 'Thanks LA County for making it frustrating and impossible to rebuild after the fires as possible. 'Shouldn't be surprised but it's mind boggling the red rape and hoops they're putting is all through.' Mandy later uploaded a second post and continued, 'I realize in my fury, my last post was a bit convoluted.' In an emotional message to her followers on Tuesday, Moore penned on her Instagram stories: 'Thanks LA County for making it frustrating and impossible to rebuild after the fires as possible' The star added, 'It's madding and heartless... the endless hoops and meaningless protocol LA County us asking of fire victims who want to rebuild and get their lives back. 'Wasn't California going to make this easy as possible? We JUST finished construction in November and the fact that we're back at square one is heartbreaking enough...' In late January, Donald Trump had paid a visit to California and sat down in a televised meeting with L.A. mayor Karen Bass to discuss efforts to aid fire victims and steps to rebuild their homes as soon as possible. While joined by other state and local leaders during the discussion, he had stated: 'I don't think you can realize how rough it is, how devastating it is until you see it. 'I didn't realize. It is devastation. It's incredible. It's really an incineration,' he added, per KTLA 5. He mentioned how he would let victims start rebuilding their homes that night, but Bass warned of the dangers of doing so, such as dealing with hazardous waste. Trump also promised support of the federal government in order to quickly restore structures and areas affected by the flames - including the Pacific Palisades and Eaton Fires. With those two fires combined, around 16,251 were completely destroyed. Bass has faced criticism over being in Ghana when the fires broke out, and was later caught in a shocking wildfire 'lie' as a campaign to have her fired began in March of this year. Other celebrities have called out the L.A. mayor shortly after the fires began, such as Khloe Kardashian who called Bass 'a joke.' In February, Karen notably sacked city fire chief Kristin Crowley as she placed the weight of the blame of how the wildfires were handled onto Crowley for not warning her of the fire dangers. Last month in April, a poll revealed that Bass's favorability has dropped since last year, per the Los Angeles Times. Moore kept her fans updated when the flames broke out in early January throughout Southern California. She had uploaded a short reel while driving down a street in Altadena to show buildings burnt to the ground as dark smoke filled the sky. The actress and her family also temporarily moved in with Hilary Duff and her loved ones during the tragic incident. Days later, the star gave an update on their home and penned, 'We were able to park and walk up our street to bear witness to all the loss. Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now. 'It's not livable but mostly intact,' she then explained. 'We lost Taylor and griffin's studio with every instrument and piece of equipment they've ever owned. We lost our garage and back house. Days later, the star gave an update on their home and penned, 'We were able to park and walk up our street to bear witness to all the loss. Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now' 'Everyone we know lost everything. Every house on our street is gone. My in laws. My brother and sister in law- 6 weeks from welcoming their first baby. Our best friends. Feeling weird survivors guilt. Moore added, 'We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support. Thanks for everyone for checking on us and offering us help. Altadena strong.' She also uploaded photos of what was left of their home, while her neighbors lost their entire properties. In February, Mandy explained that although their abode was still intact, they could not move back in. 'We found out this week that while our house is still standing, because of the proximity to the fires/ burning structures (around us on all sides) the contents of our home are a near total loss.' The actress acknowledged how lucky they were and then added, 'But also… do we still have a home? I think my definition is in flux. The physical space? No.' She later expressed, 'We were weeks away from finally being done with everything when the fires hit. I'm not saying all of this because I'm asking you to feel more sorry for us than someone else. 'Like I said, I am grateful. We're so lucky! By the grace of god we found a place to stay in the meantime and the kids are happy and safe...' Beforehand, the Tangled actress had told her followers to 'F Off' after facing backlash for sharing a GoFundMe page for her relatives. Mandy had explained her brother-in-law and sister-in-law 'lost their home and everything they own' only weeks before welcoming their first child. She shared the GoFundMe to her Instagram page - which was created by Hilary Duff and her husband Matt Koma - but social media users were less than thrilled over the move. 'You can't help them? You're millionaires????' one penned, while others came to the star's defense. She shared the GoFundMe to her Instagram page - which was created by Hilary Duff and her husband Matt Koma - but social media users were less than thrilled over the move In response to the criticism that she received, the mom-of-three shared a follow-up post that read: 'People questioning whether we're helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money Google says someone has is NOT helpful or empathetic. 'Of course we are. Our buddy Matt started this go fund me and I'm sharing because people have asked how they can help them.' She added, 'We just lost most of our life in a fire too. Kindly F OFF. No one is forcing you to do anything.' A few months earlier, Mandy
