Thomas Müller to continue football career in the US

Munich (dpa) Thomas Müller is to continue his football career in the United States, broadcaster Sky reported on Tuesday. According to the report, Müller, who left Bayern Munich this summer after the Club World Cup, will not retire for now. The 2014 World Cup champion is set for a move to the MLS and has two options to choose from. One of them is Los Angeles FC, a partner of Bayern, according to Sky. FC Cincinnati have said last month that they had offered Müller a deal. Müller is yet to officially confirm whether he will continue playing football. The veteran midfielder is currently on vacation and is expected to sign a contract with his new club in the next seven days, Sky said. An official announcement will then be made. Müller left Bayern after 25 years of service as his contract expired this summer and he wasn't given a new deal. His last game for his boyhood club was the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.

Klinsmann wants Müller to continue in US, Hoeness doesn't

Munich's Thomas Mueller sits on the bench ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final soccer match against between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Sven Hoppe/dpa Thomas Müller should continue his career in Major League Soccer after the end of his 25 years at Bayern Munich, former Bayern player and coach Jürgen Klinsmann has said. Müller, 35, is yet to decide on his future after his trophy-laden Bayern career ended on Saturday when Bayern lost their Club World Cup quarter-final 2-0 against Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta. Advertisement Müller come on for the final 10 minutes for his 756th first team match, almost 17 years after he got his first Bundesliga start in August 2008 under then coach Klinsmann, who integrated him into the first team from the reserves. Klinsmann, who has been living in California for many years and was also US national team coach, said in a column for Kicker sports magazine that he hopes Müller will take the plunge into MLS. "I wish that he continues for a few more years, and of course that he includes the US adventure in his considerations," Klinsmann said. "He has everything to give football in the US another push, like Lionel Messi and Marco Reus as well are doing." Advertisement Messi plays for Inter Miami and Germany's Reus for Los Angeles Galaxy. LA could also be a destination for Müller in the form of Los Angeles FC who are said to be interested in the 2014 World Cup winner. "He would surely have a lot of joy, and of course I hope that in this case it would preferably draw him to Los Angeles," Klinsmann said. Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness meanwhile expressed scepticism about a possible US move for Müller. "I always said that it would be better for him to retire. But if he really wants to do it then he should," Hoeness told reporters on Saturday in Munich. Advertisement Hoeness agreed that the MLS has improved in quality but warned that "when you have played at Bayern and then in Los Angeles - it is not the same thing." Müller said on Saturday he was "aware that it was the last match" but that there was no decision yet. "You have to process the events first. I'm still fully in work mode. Everything else will come gradually," he said. One scenario is however out of the question, staying at Bayern because of Jamal Musiala's severe leg injury sustained on Saturday. Müller named such suggestions "tawdry" and board member for sport Max Eberl insisted that "this is actually not in our thoughts."

Bayern brace themselves for months without Musiala after CWC exit

Bayern Munich were set to return to Germany on Sunday after their Club World Cup exit, licking their wounds after a 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain and bracing themselves for months without influential playmaker Jamal Musiala. Musiala sustained a suspected fibula fracture and is also said to have torn ligaments in his left leg after being hit by PSG goalkeeper Ginaluigi Donnarumma late in the first half of ther match PSG won 2-0. Advertisement Bayern were yet to announce an official diagnosis for the 22-year-old, and it was also unclear whether he would join the team on the return flight to Germany or undergo surgery in the US, according to board member for sport Max Eberl. Another big setback for Musiala It was a major setback for Musiala who was making his first start since suffering a muscle injury three months ago, and who will also be missed by Germany's national team which plays World Cup qualifiers in autumn. "What gets my blood boiling is not the result but it happened to someone who loves the game so much and is also very important for us," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. Advertisement The Musiala injury completely overshadowed the end of Thomas Müller's trophy-laden 25 years with 756 first team matches at the club, and the 35-year-old Müller quickly dismissed as "tawdry" suggestions he should perhaps be given another short-term deal to cover in Musiala's absence. Injury makes reinforecments more important Musiala's fate was the emotional blow on a day when ambitions Bayern found out again that they can compete with the best but not quite have the class to beat them - even conceding the second goal when Ousmane Dembelé wrapped up matters after PSG were reduced to nine players. Eberl said that Bayern "learnt the hard way" that they didn't attack well in the end, after the team "went toe-to-toe with the current Champions League winners and played very well." Advertisement Eberl said that Musiala's road to recovery "will definitely not be easy" - and neither will his own task of finding an adequate replacement, and reinforcements in general to be more competitive. The Woltemade case This could speed up their effort to get new Germany forward Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart. Bayern have been after the 23-year-old for weeks but Stuttgart allegedly want a huge fee, with some some reports speaking of close to €100 million ($118 million), to get him out of his contract until 2028. Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness has just named Woltemade "a very, very good player who would be a great fit for us." Advertisement Bayern may be ready to spend more than originally planned - including fresh income from the Club World Cup - because Woltemade is not only a reliable goal scorer but he can also play in Musiala's position. New players are also needed if Bayern don't want to fall further behind PSG and others on the international stage, having also missed the Champions League final in their home stadium in a quarter-final defeat against eventual finalists Inter Milan. Fresh ambitions after holiday Kompany meanwhile announced a three-week holiday for the players to recharge their batteries for the new season which the Bundesliga champions start on August 16 in the Super Cup at German Cup winners Stuttgart. Advertisement Veteran goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer remained defiant after Saturday's match, insisting that "FC Bayern are a force to be reckoned with – you've seen that this season. "This match in particular is an example, to say: now more than ever, we want to go for it in Europe again, and also be up there in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup again. We need to take this motivation from games like this, to say: this time we're on it,' Neuer said.

Bayern Munich Midfielder Jamal Musiala Badly Injures His Leg Against PSG at Club World Cup

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala badly injured his left leg and was forced to leave his team's match against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in the Club World Cup quarterfinals. Musiala was hurt late in the first half following a 50-50 challenge with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The replay of the gruesome injury was not shown on the big screens at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. PSG went on to win the match 2-0. The injury came in Musiala's first start for Bayern in three months following a hamstring injury in April. 'I believe the boy has really had a tough few months behind him and he has pushed through well,' Bayern forward Thomas Müller said. 'We all keep our fingers crossed.' The 22-year-old Musiala, who also plays for Germany's national team, entered Saturday's match with three goals in the tournament — one behind golden boot leaders Ángel Di María and Marcos Leonardo. His Club World Cup goals brought his tally to 21 this season, including 12 in the Bundesliga and three in the Champions League. Musiala's injury came just before halftime. The referee whistled for the break as the midfielder received treatment on the field. Serge Gnabry replaced him in the lineup to begin the second half with the score 0-0. 'I want to send a small message to him,' PSG defender Achraf Hakimi said. 'We support him, and we want to see him back soon on the pitch because he's a great player.' Musiala is a rising star, earning Player of the Year honors for the German national team in 2024. He was also runner-up for the Golden Boy award in 2023, which is awarded to Europe's brightest under-21 talent. Musiala debuted for Bayern Munich in 2020 when he was 17, becoming the team's youngest ever player at the time of his debut. In 2022, he became the first teenager to appear for the German national team at a World Cup since 1958. Because of the injury, Bayern may have to start next season without Musiala. The German club lost out on Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz to Liverpool in the transfer market, leaving Bayern short in the attacking midfield position.

Thomas Müller bids farewell to Bayern Munich with loss in Club World Cup

ATLANTA (AP) — After the final whistle to his Club World Cup, Thomas Müller waved to the Bayern Munich fans one last time. His quarter-century with the German club is over. The 35-year-old Müller went out with a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals on Saturday, a bittersweet ending to a tenure filled with so much glory. Müller came on as a substitute in the 80th minute and appeared to a draw a penalty in the waning seconds of stoppage time when PSG's Nuno Mendes delivered a high challenge in the area. But the video review showed that Mendes' foot struck the ball, just missing Müller's chin, and that finished off the PSG victory. 'I'm still fully in work mode now,' Müller said. 'It doesn't feel much different from before the game when we tried, and I also tried, to just get one round further.' He wasn't ready to reflect on his brilliant career at Bayern, which began when he joined the club as a 10-year-old in the summer of 2000. 'In the end, maybe we deserved more,' Müller said. 'But in football when you have these tight matches, it's sometimes a coin flip. And, yes, we lost it.' Müller made more appearances than any other player at Bayern, with more than 200 goals scored and more than 200 set up for others. He led the club to a record 13 Bundesliga titles, going out with one last championship this past season. But Bayern announced in April that it would not extend his hefty contract for another season. 'Of course, I am aware that this was my last game, and I will see what goes through my head in the coming days,' Müller said. He hasn't revealed his future plans, though there have been reports linking him to a possible move to U.S.-based Major League Soccer. 'At the moment, I'm not in the mood to share my deeper thoughts about my career,' Müller said. 'We lost a big fight, a very important game for us.'
