Mandatory Credit: Thomas Shea-Imagn Images HOUSTON, Texas - Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sunday to successfully defend their CONCACAF Gold Cup crown and capture their 10th title in a pulsating final that delivered drama from start to finish. The U.S. went ahead just four minutes in when Sebastian Berhalter's free-kick found Chris Richards, whose powerful header struck the underside of the crossbar and cannoned straight down, with the referee confirming the goal was good. Mexico found the equalizer through Raul Jimenez in the 27th minute after the striker converted from close range. He then dedicated the goal to the late Diogo Jota, his former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate, by holding up a Mexico shirt with the Portuguese forward's name on it. "We came from behind and are leaving with the title," Jimenez said. "It's great and really important to clinch the crown a summer before the World Cup. It's something we've been trying to do since the tournament began." Despite Mexico's first-half dominance they struggled to capitalise on numerous golden opportunities. Roberto Alvarado and 16-year-old Gilberto Mora both tested U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese, with Mora's venomous long-range effort requiring a crucial save from the American shot-stopper. Alex Freeman came closest when his header struck Mexico goalkeeper Luis Malagon in the face and Diego Luna blazed the rebound over the crossbar. Mexico cranked up the pressure after the break and got the crucial second goal when Edson Alvarez powered home a header, though there was a nervous wait due to a VAR review for potential offside. However, the goal stood and the Mexican contingent erupted with wild celebrations. "I'm speechless. We spent 35 days in intense training, away from our families, with the intention of winning. There's certainly room for improvement, but we're leaving happy and with our feet firmly on the ground," midfielder Alvarez said. "When they first disallowed the goal, it was crazy. It threw me off balance, but I was really happy to see that it was valid." Patrick Agyemang had the chance to equalise in the dying minutes but his finish just missed the mark in a tense finale as Mexico held firm to secure their triumph. Mexico's victory secures back-to-back Gold Cup triumphs and brings them a record-extending 10th crown. Mexico also won the CONCACAF Nations Championship, the Gold Cup's predecessor, three times. 📈 MLS Power Rankings: Miami hit new low, Minnesota climb, and more

The MLS Power Rankings experienced quite the shakeup this week after some surprise results over the weekend. While the Eastern Conference had dominated the top-five in the early weeks of the season, the balance is starting to shift in the top-10. Let's dig in. This week we will introduce a new section into the Power Rankings —'On the Bubble'. The teams in this section are just knocking on the door of the top-10 and barely failed to make the cut this week, but do deserve mention for recent form. On the Bubble: Nashville SC, Portland Timbers, Orlando City, New York Red Bulls. 📸 Thomas Shea-Imagn Images Look out people, Seattle Sounders are on the march. The addition of Ryan Kent has sparked new life in a Seattle side struggling for goals earlier in the season, but now they have won four of their last five, scoring 14 goals in the process. Performances are trending up, but they need to start picking up more wins. 📸 Steve Roberts-Imagn Images After starting the season in legitimate Supporters Shield caliber form, Charlotte have seemingly hit a wall with three straight defeats in MLS. Wilfried Zaha has just three goals in 10 games so far this season. If Charlotte are to rediscover their early spring form, he will have to be a catalyst. 📸 Joe Puetz-Imagn Images San Diego just continue to fly under the radar as one of the top teams in the Western Conference. The 'Daygo Boys' have won two straight in MLS after a short losing streak, jumping up into the top-four in the conference once again. Anders Dreyer and Chucky Lozano remain one of the top wing pairings in all of MLS. Against Columbus Crew over the weekend, Philadelphia were seconds away from picking it up, but a stoppage-time dagger left honors even. But vibes remain positive in the City of Brotherly Love after a record start to an MLS campaign. The Herons have picked up wins in just two of their last six games, and serious questions are being asked about rookie head coach Javier Mascherano. Days later, I'm still absolutely dying at Jordi Alba's 'defending' in Inter Miami's latest goes to quadruple team an opponent in the corner for no reason at all and leaves a giant gap in the middle of the all-time bad decision-making -- but peak comedy. — Joseph Lowery (@joeclowery) May 13, 2025 📸 Kyle Ross-Imagn Images The Crew are perhaps unlucky to have slipped a few places in the standings, but is largely due to the fact that they picked up just a point over the weekend, while a couple of teams around them in the top-10 secured big victories. Don't forget though, the Crew are in the hunt for an Eastern Conference title and potentially a Supporters Shield even without a recognizable star attacker. 📸 David Berding - 2025 Getty Images After a small dip, the Loons have come flying back into the top-three off the back of a comprehensive victory over Inter Miami on Saturday. 📈 MLS Power Rankings: No movement in the top-three, plenty elsewhere

MLS keeps on rolling and so does our weekly top-10 power rankings. While the top-three teams remained locked in place after Matchday 7's action, there was plenty of movers and shakers elsewhere. Lock in, folks! 10. Austin FC (👎) 📸 Joaquin Torre-Imagn Images Advertisement Despite boasting one of the most expensive attacking units in MLS, Austin have made a conservative start to the season under new boss Nico Estévez, but the game-plan has seemingly paid off. After a goalless draw with Portland over the weekend, they have now only conceded three goals in seven games. At the other end of the pitch however, they have only scored five. If they can produce more goals from their counter-attacks, their defensive acumen is solid enough to make them a true contender. 9. Orlando City (👍) 📸 Luther Schlaifer-Imagn Images Unlike Austin, Orlando's strength this season has been the high-flying form of their attacking stars, though they were blanked by a rock-solid Philadelphia side over the weekend. Advertisement Orlando are still trying find a balance between defense and attack, but when they do they will be one of the toughest outs in the east. 8. LAFC (👎) 📸 Thomas Shea-Imagn Images Steve Cherundolo's side continue to slip in our top-10. After suffering a surprise defeat in Houston on Saturday, albeit with a weather delay mucking the evening up, LAFC have now lost three of their last four MLS games and find themselves seven points out first place in the Western Conference. While some of this slump can be attributed to their ongoing Concacaf Champions Cup tie with Inter Miami, you can't look past this LAFC team continually dropping points against perceived inferior teams. 7. Philadelphia Union (👎) 📸 Thomas Shea-Imagn Images Advertisement Philadelphia falling a few places in the rankings may seem harsh, but they are a victim of the teams around them all excelling over the weekend. A relatively drab goalless draw with Orlando on Saturday means they've now dropped points in two straight matches after a record-start to the campaign. However, whether it's seventh or fourth, the Union should be remaining in our top-10 throughout most of this campaign. 6. Charlotte FC (👍) 📸 Scott Kinser-Imagn Images Charlotte are back to winning ways after coming back to down Nashville early on Saturday. The stars like Pep Biel and Wilfried Zaha are starting to shine once again after a few weeks of anonymity, and with a solid tactical foundation in place at all times, it is that stardust that will elevate Charlotte to the next level. 5. Minnesota United (👍) 📸 Lucas Boland-Imagn Images Advertisement Eric Ramsay's side have become one of the toughest nuts to crack in all of MLS. Since an opening day defeat to LAFC, the Loons have remained unbeaten in the league, and have now won two straight thanks to a solid victory away to NYCFC over the weekend. Tani Oluwaseyi has been a revelation up front, scoring five goals in six games so far this season. Like Charlotte before them, Minnesota thrive off of being well-coached, and sprinkling in individual brilliance when it matters. 4. Vancouver Whitecaps (👍) 📸 Simon Fearn-Imagn Images Vancouver should perhaps be higher in this ranking, but after dropping points in two straight matches before dispatching Colorado over the weekend, they slipped just enough to allow this week's top-three to blow by them. Advertisement Whitecaps fans won't give a damn however, as they remain top of the Supporters Shield race. The shock start is looking far more than a purple patch now. 3. San Diego FC (no movement) 📸 Denis Poroy-Imagn Images What can you say about San Diego that hasn't been said yet? The MLS newcomers continue to ride the buzz of their new surroundings, thrashing the Seattle Sounders in SoCal late Saturday evening. Chucky Lozano marked his return with a hand in all three goals (2G, 1A), and the Mexican looks dead set on being the catalyst for consistent success at SnapDragon. 2. Columbus Crew (no movement) 📸 Samantha Madar/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Advertisement The Crew just keep doing Crew things. After fending off a late fight-back from Montréal over the weekend, Columbus extended their unbeaten streak to start the season to seven games. They've taken the key departures of star attackers in the winter right on the chin. 1. Inter Miami (no movement) 📸 Jim Rassol-Imagn Images Surprise surprise, Inter Miami remain top of our rankings, despite a surprise home draw with lowly Toronto on Sunday night. Like LAFC before them, some grace can be given to the Herons as they have one eye on the second-leg showdown with Steve Cherundolo's side. 📸 Featured image: Simon Fearn-Imagn Images
