'Mera Dil Baith Gaya Tha': Aamir Khan Says He Knew Thugs Of Hindostan Would Flop

Last Updated: Aamir Khan discussed Thugs of Hindostan's failure, revealing he predicted it and wasn't disappointed. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Aamir Khan's Thugs of Hindostan (2018) boasted of an ensemble star cast, however, the YRF-backed film went on to become a box office disaster. The superstar addressed whether the film's terrible performance disappointed him. He mentioned that he wasn't affected by it since he predicted that the film wouldn't do well. Aamir Khan spoke about Thugs of Hindostan's failure at Raj Shamani's podcast. He said, 'Mujhe bhi Thugs of Hindostan pasand nahi thi. Aaj main khulke bol sakta hoon — Aditya Chopra (producer) se maine bohot koshish ki unko… Jab film release ho rahi thi, main khud hi khush nahi tha. Kiran Rao (ex-wife) ko pata hai, jab meri film release aati hai, main do mahine tak so nahi pata, mera mind overtime chalta hai (I didn't like Thugs of Hindostan either. Today, I can openly say it — I really tried to convince Aditya Chopra (the producer)… When the film was about to release, I myself wasn't happy. Kiran Rao (my ex-wife) knows that whenever I have a film releasing, I can't sleep for two months — my mind goes into overdrive)." Aamir mentioned that in the months before a film's release, he typically struggles with sleep as his mind is constantly occupied with thoughts about the project. However, during the release of Thugs of Hindostan, he was surprisingly calm and slept peacefully. He said, 'Kiran (Rao) ne mujhe bola, 'Release nazdeek aa rahi hai, aur tum itminaan se so rahe ho? Chakkar kya hai?' Maine usse kaha, 'Kiran [Rao], mujhe pata hai yeh film nahi chalne wali.' Mere andar na excitement hai, na anticipation ki log film dekhenge. Mera dil baith gaya hai ki log yeh film dekhenge. Main khud hi film se khush nahi hoon. Lekin jab producer aur director khush hain, toh main kya kar sakta hoon? (Kiran said to me, 'The release is around the corner, and you're sleeping so peacefully? What's going on?' I told her, 'Kiran, I know this film isn't going to work.' I have neither excitement nor anticipation about people watching it. My heart sinks at the thought of people seeing this film. I'm not happy with it myself. But when the producer and director are satisfied, what can I do?)." He further stated that he expressed his feelings about the film very strongly to producer Aditya Chopra. 'But I don't blame them. It's a creative work. Aap apne instincts se hi toh jaa sakte ho. Maine kahaan tha ye film paani bhi nahi maangegi," he said. The superstar also mentioned that while he wasn't affected by the failure of Thugs of Hindostan, he was heartbroken when Laal Singh Chaddha flopped. Thugs of Hindostan also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles. The film barely managed to recover its reported Rs 310 crore budget, with a worldwide gross of Rs 335 crore. First Published:

Aamir Khan admitted he was unhappy with 'Thugs of Hindostan' and predicted its failure despite producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya's confidence. Unlike his usual anxiety before releases, he felt calm during this film's launch. He is now preparing for 'Sitaare Zameen Par', a remake of Champions. Aamir Khan recently reflected on the disappointing outcome of his 2018 movie 'Thugs of Hindostan', which also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. He confessed that he had anticipated the film's failure, as he personally didn't enjoy the project and lacked confidence for its release. Candid Confession During his appearance on Raj Shamani's podcast, Aamir openly admitted, "Mujhe bhi Thugs of Hindostan pasand nahi thi. Aaj main khulke bol sakta hoon — Aditya Chopra (producer) se maine bohot koshish ki unko... Jab film release ho rahi thi, main khud hi khush nahi tha. Kiran Rao (ex-wife) ko pata hai, jab meri film release aati hai, main do mahine tak so nahi pata, mera mind overtime chalta hai." He revealed that he never truly liked the film and struggled with anxiety around its release, despite trying hard to convince the producer. This film made for Rs 300 crore turned out to be a disaster, producers went bankrupt, audience demanded refund, hero apologised, lead actors are…, film is…

The three biggest superstars of Hindi cinema, Bollywood's biggest production house and a budget of Rs 300 crores. This film became a disaster despite having a bumper opening of Rs 52 crores on the first day. This film went bankrupt at the box office. Despite tremendous hype, the film neither got the love of critics nor the applause of the audience. You must be wondering which film we are talking about. Despite being released on Diwali, this big-budget film still failed to perform. Can you guess which film it is? We are talking about the Bollywood film 'Thugs of Hindostan' released on 8 November 2018, in which Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Katrina Kaif were the three superstars. There was tremendous excitement among the audience about this film, made with a huge budget of Rs 300 crore. For the first time, big stars like Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan were sharing the screen. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, this film was a historical drama that was produced by Yash Raj Films. The film made a record-breaking earning of Rs 52 crore on the first day, but after this, the story disappointed the audience. Due to negative reviews and the disappointment of the audience, the earnings of the film started falling rapidly. On the fourth day, this figure shrank to just Rs 6 crore. The film made a total net collection of Rs 151 crore in India, while the worldwide gross collection was Rs 327 crore. This figure was extremely disappointing for such a big-budget film. There were empty seats in the theatres, and demands for a refund were raised from many places. In an interview given to Hindustan Times in 2019, Aamir Khan took responsibility for the failure of the film and apologised. He said, 'I am used to taking responsibility for my films. People had a lot of expectations from Thugs of Hindostan, but we did not live up to their expectations. I am very sad about this.'

Bollywood's most expensive film, bigger than Pushpa, Baahubali, had 7 stars; trolls killed it

The year was 2019. COVID-19 did not exist yet (for a few more months). Bollywood was thriving, and nepotism was just a buzzword that did not yet derail careers. But it was all around the corner. And it began with one film, one that never even went on the floors and yet changed the landscape of Hindi cinema. Touted as the most expensive Bollywood film ever, this movie starred seven big names and was helmed by the biggest director around. Karan Johar's Takht was more ambitious than most. But then what became of it? In 2019, Karan Johar announced his next directorial after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Titled Takht, the period drama revolved around the power grab in the Mughal Empire at the end of Emperor Shah Jahan's reign. The focus of the film would be the two princes - Alamgir (later Aurangzeb) and Dara Shikoh's fight for the throne. Johar described it as 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in the medieval times', eliciting divisive responses. The film featured a blockbuster cast, including Anil Kapoor as Shah Jahan, Vicky Kaushal as Aurangzeb, Ranveer Singh as Prince Dara Shikoh, Kareena Kapoor as Princess Jahanara, and Bhumi Pednekar as Princess Roshanara. Alia Bhatt was cast as Aurangzeb's wife Dilras Banu, while Janhvi Kapoor was to play Dara Shikoh's wife Nadira. As per reports, the film was to be mounted on a massive ₹250-crore budget, the biggest in the history of Hindi cinema at the time. At the time, Thugs of Hindostan ( ₹220 crore) was the most expensive Hindi film. Since then, the record has been broken by Brahmastra and Adipurush. If made on its stipulated budget, Takht would have been even bigger than Baahubali Part One ( ₹180 crore budget) and Pushpa The Rise ( ₹100 crore budget). Takht was set to begin filming in March 2020. The first poster announced a release date of December 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic stalled the filming. Still, Karan Johar was optimistic about its revival. Talking about the film, Karan told the press, 'That film is a piece of my heart. It's got two and a half years of my prep work on it. We were preparing to go. I still remember we were starting on April 24 when the pandemic hit us in March. The film was so enormous, voluminous, and complex that it required a thousand workers on site every day. It was that kind of movie." However, the backlash Hindi films received post the discourse on Sushant Singh Rajput's death in June 2020 changed the scenario. Star kids became targets of online trolling, and Karan Johar became the 'face of nepotism' online. The intense backlash to 'nepo kids' became centred around KJo. The fact that Takht had 3 star kids in the lead roles and was Karan's dream project meant it was an easy target. Even after things normalised after the lockdowns were lifted, Karan did not revive Takht. The director quit Twitter amid the backlash and lay low for a while. In 2021, he announced another project, which became Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. And slowly, Takht was sent to the back burner, never to be revived. While there is no official word on the film as of 2025, insiders say that Karan is not too keen to revive it anytime soon, at least not with the same cast.
