'Mera Dil Baith Gaya Tha': Aamir Khan Says He Knew Thugs Of Hindostan Would Flop
Last Updated:
Aamir Khan discussed Thugs of Hindostan's failure, revealing he predicted it and wasn't disappointed. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
Aamir Khan's Thugs of Hindostan (2018) boasted of an ensemble star cast, however, the YRF-backed film went on to become a box office disaster. The superstar addressed whether the film's terrible performance disappointed him. He mentioned that he wasn't affected by it since he predicted that the film wouldn't do well.
Aamir Khan spoke about Thugs of Hindostan's failure at Raj Shamani's podcast. He said, 'Mujhe bhi Thugs of Hindostan pasand nahi thi. Aaj main khulke bol sakta hoon — Aditya Chopra (producer) se maine bohot koshish ki unko… Jab film release ho rahi thi, main khud hi khush nahi tha. Kiran Rao (ex-wife) ko pata hai, jab meri film release aati hai, main do mahine tak so nahi pata, mera mind overtime chalta hai (I didn't like Thugs of Hindostan either. Today, I can openly say it — I really tried to convince Aditya Chopra (the producer)… When the film was about to release, I myself wasn't happy. Kiran Rao (my ex-wife) knows that whenever I have a film releasing, I can't sleep for two months — my mind goes into overdrive)."
Aamir mentioned that in the months before a film's release, he typically struggles with sleep as his mind is constantly occupied with thoughts about the project. However, during the release of Thugs of Hindostan, he was surprisingly calm and slept peacefully.
He said, 'Kiran (Rao) ne mujhe bola, 'Release nazdeek aa rahi hai, aur tum itminaan se so rahe ho? Chakkar kya hai?' Maine usse kaha, 'Kiran [Rao], mujhe pata hai yeh film nahi chalne wali.' Mere andar na excitement hai, na anticipation ki log film dekhenge. Mera dil baith gaya hai ki log yeh film dekhenge. Main khud hi film se khush nahi hoon. Lekin jab producer aur director khush hain, toh main kya kar sakta hoon? (Kiran said to me, 'The release is around the corner, and you're sleeping so peacefully? What's going on?' I told her, 'Kiran, I know this film isn't going to work.' I have neither excitement nor anticipation about people watching it. My heart sinks at the thought of people seeing this film. I'm not happy with it myself. But when the producer and director are satisfied, what can I do?)."
He further stated that he expressed his feelings about the film very strongly to producer Aditya Chopra. 'But I don't blame them. It's a creative work. Aap apne instincts se hi toh jaa sakte ho. Maine kahaan tha ye film paani bhi nahi maangegi," he said. The superstar also mentioned that while he wasn't affected by the failure of Thugs of Hindostan, he was heartbroken when Laal Singh Chaddha flopped.
Thugs of Hindostan also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles. The film barely managed to recover its reported Rs 310 crore budget, with a worldwide gross of Rs 335 crore.

Allahabad HC stays arrest of music producer Sunil Yadav in kidnapping case
According to the prosecution, Anupama was in love with Sunil Yadav, and they were going to get married in April this year. A two-judge bench comprising Justice Siddhartha and Justice Ram Manohar Narayan Mishra also issued notice to Sushmita Yadav, a sister of the alleged victim, Anupama Yadav. Prayagraj, Jun 3 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has stayed the arrest of music producer Sunil Yadav, who was booked allegedly for kidnapping a woman whom he had signed for an album, a court official said on Tuesday. On February 19, Sunil Yadav came to Anupama's house and said he had to go to Nepal for wedding shopping. He took Anupama in a car, a Mahindra Scorpio. After two hours, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sunil's brother, got a call from Anupama, who told him Sunil was not taking her to Nepal, but to Bihar. After the call, her mobile phone became unavailable. On February 22, around 9 am, Sunil Yadav told Sushmita over the phone that Anupama was not with him. Sushmita has since alleged that Sunil Yadav has either sold her sister, aged 25, or murdered her. Sunil Yadav alleged that the two sisters ran a blackmail racket. According to his counsel, Sunil Yadav had given Anupama a role in an album and paid her around Rs 6 lakh. But she refused to work on the album, and subsequently fabricated the kidnapping story, he claimed. On February 23, Sunil Yadav was booked under sections 87 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing a woman to compel her marriage, etc) of BNS at the Kotwali Police Station in Deoria district. 'Sitaare Zameen Par' makers shares his opinion on marching of tech in cinema
Director R.S. Prasanna, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par', feels that human beings will soon catch up with the technological changes in filmmaking. The filmmaker spoke with IANS in the run-up to the release of his film, which features Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh. He recollected how he saw Indian cinema legend Kamal Haasan experimenting with a digital camera, Red Dragon. Speaking with IANS, Prasanna said, "I think the industry is pretty fast in adapting, like I remember when 35mm film was there and I was in film school and Kamal Haasan sir was testing the Red camera in our L.V. Prasad Film Institute, Chennai where I studied. He was doing a test shoot. I remember all the people around saying, 'it's just a fad and it'll not happen, it's not gonna happen', and it did". Aamir Khan's altered AI video hits cyberspace; 'Mr Perfectionist' issues clarification on 'endorsing' a particular political party The director said that one cannot stop the march of technology and one has to adapt. The audience will demand a change, the filmmakers will rise, the technological change will happen as it should, and experiments will keep happening, some will click, some will not. He further mentioned, "But I think one thing which will never change is the way our hearts beat, so as long as the heart is there in everything, the visual is only pixels, the sound is only decibels, but that feeling, that soul, that is, as long as we have a heart, stories told by humans will always be relevant". He then cited the example of romance as to how the shape or form of romance in cinematic storytelling has changed but the soul is the same. He shared, "If you see around yourself, romance has been there from early manage, they may say romance has changed, no romance has not changed, the medium has changed, today you call it situationship or anything else but, still the heart pains if you don't get to be with the person of your choice". "I feel unless genetically our heart changes or our mind changes, I think storytelling and emotions will be the same, the form will keep changing and we have to be on the awareness of that as a director, but I think for me as a filmmaker, I'm only looking for the soul, which I think soul is very old, so it won't change that fast", he added. Produced by Aamir Khan under his banner, Aamir Khan Productions, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is set to release in cinemas on June 20, 2025.
