"He's more introverted, so he definitely won't go into acting or singing like I did," she shared, adding that he's a great artist. "I don't know what he'll do! Maybe become a doctor or work with animals. He's working with animals right now." While she didn't want to take too much credit for how her son, who she shares with ex-husband Simon Wakelin, turned out she is aware that she did a good job giving him the foundation he needed in order to grow into the good person he is today. Wayne's World star reveals her teenager has come out as transgender

Tia Carrere has revealed that her 19-year-old son Jude has come out as transgender. The Wayne's World bombshell, now 58, opened up about her teen's transition in a new interview, sharing that Jude—her only child with ex-husband Simon Wakelin—is thriving. 'He's very matter-of-fact,' Carrere told People. 'He knows who he is, and he's very happy.' The actress, who played Cassandra Wong in the 1992 cult comedy, said Jude is wise beyond his years and the rock of his friend group. 'He's such a sweetheart, he's like the therapist to all the other kids,' she said. 'When his friends go out drinking or partying too hard, he's always the designated driver, that kind of caring friend you can always lean on.' But I don't want to congratulate myself too much! He's his own person!' Though he walked the red carpet at the Lilo & Stitch premiere solo—Carrere was filming at the time—Jude is not one for the Hollywood limelight. 'He doesn't love the spotlight,' she said, adding that he has no plans to follow in her acting or singing footsteps. 'But he's a great artist. I don't know what he'll do! Maybe become a doctor or work with animals. He's working with animals right now.' Long before Tia publicly revealed Jude is transgender, the actress was already gushing about him—referring to him as her daughter in a 2023 red carpet interview. Back in December 2023, Carrere opened up to People at the Unforgettable Gala in Los Angeles, just ahead of the holidays. At the time, she proudly spoke about Jude heading off to college, calling him Bianca and describing him as a free spirit. 'My daughter's going to be starting college next year, so I just want to be home,' she said. 'I never went to college, so I'm excited for her.' 'He's such a sweetheart, he's like the therapist to all the other kids,' she said. 'When his friends go out drinking or partying too hard, he's always the designated driver, that kind of caring friend you can always lean on; (pictured 2008) She continued, 'I'm really thankful that I think, somehow, I had a hand in making a child that doesn't feel like she has to fit in with everybody else, doesn't feel like she has to wear the same clothes, do the same thing. 'She's a real individual, and I think it was because she grew up in Topanga.' Carrere described Jude—then publicly known as Bianca—as 'kind of a hippie kid' who 'loves going to Goodwill.' She added, 'It's kind of good not to be ruled by that world. I'm really proud of her.'a and Jude

Actress-Singer Tia Carrere Embraces Life's Changes

Versatile actress and two-time Grammy Award winner Tia Carrere has spent the past four decades embracing new roles and reinventing herself across film, television, and music. That's what it took to build up a notable stack of acting credits—'Wayne's World,' 'True Lies,' 'Lilo & Stitch,' 'Relic Hunter.' In a recent interview with The Epoch Times, the Hawaiian-born actress shared that at 58, she's ready and eager to appreciate the rewards of her hard work. 'I have to pinch myself because as you're running through all these things that you want to do in your life, it comes to that time, you have to relax into enjoying the fruits of your labor,' Carrere said. One of those fruits is her new membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which she was invited to join in 2024. An Academy membership most significantly allows Carrere, who credits her acting career to a producer spotting her in a grocery store in Waikiki, Hawaii, to vote on Oscar nominations and winners, contributing to the selection of the best films and filmmakers in various categories. Aside from her professional career success—her latest movie, the live-action remake of Disney's 2002 animated film 'Lilo & Stitch,' premieres on May 23—Carrere also feels personally accomplished. 'I've definitely hit my stride in the past couple of years,' she said. 'In the last couple [of] years, the things that weren't working for me anymore, I left behind. And the things that I used to let scare me, I saw as challenges to overcome.' The Great Outdoors On a recent trip to Belize, she conquered one of those fears—swimming in the open ocean. Related Stories 2/13/2025 2/5/2025 'I know, being from Hawaii, it seems insane, but I've always been terrified of sharks,' Carrere said. 'I was swimming surrounded [by] three sharks just moving around. It was so beautiful and so calming. I got certified for diving to 100 feet. I always thought it was going to be claustrophobic, and come to find out, not so much. 'I find it expansive and like a meditation to go scuba diving under the ocean. It really makes you calm your breathing and calm your nervous system, and just relax into the experience of commuting with nature.' In addition to her newfound appreciation for diving and swimming, Carrere has discovered the joys of traversing 'up hills and mountains' while mountain biking. 'I thought I physically was incapable of doing that,' she said. 'But I do that now and it's [about] enjoying the journey of learning something, of building up a skill, of challenging myself.' This is powerful stuff, acknowledged Carrere, especially when working in an industry that values youth. 'You know, that old adage of, Who's Tia Carrere? Get me Tia Carrere. Get me a younger Tia Carrere. And who's Tia Carrere?' she said. 'It's a cruel truth. But it really is what it is. It's only painful if you fight it.' The Power of Family It was her grandmother's fortitude that motivated Carrere during the more difficult times of her journey. 'She caught the bus to work. She worked at Pearl Harbor for 50 years, and she always taught me her work ethic and being humble,' Carrere said. 'I'm grateful—every wonderful thing that comes my way—it's beyond anything I ever imagined was a possibility for me.' At this moment, Carrere is taking the reins of her career. Besides recently pitching a television show she's working on with a few girlfriends that she hopes to film in Hawaii, she's busy working on her one-woman show. ''Songs of Love and Heartache' ... It's basically from Honolulu to Hollywood and back again,' she said. 'I'm using show tunes, original songs, as well as standards to tell the story of what it was like moving out here at 17 and how confusing and terrifying it was sometimes and coming out the other end.' Then there are the life lessons she's eager to share with others coming up behind her in Hollywood—or any industry. 'I wish I had known earlier my own worth because I feel like I put up with a lot of nonsense and let people take more from me than they gave in many different instances,' she said. 'I wish I had known that you don't have to be so afraid. 'Work will come, you will find love, you will figure out how to be happy, but you can't hold on to something that's not making you happy. 'And it's a constant recalibration all along the length and breadth of our lives. I'm still figuring it out. I'm seeking out the truth.'

'Lilo & Stitch' Stars Say 'Organic Authenticity' of the Film's Hawaiian Representation Is 'Important' (Exclusive)

Lilo & Stitch is a live-action remake of the beloved 2002 animated film about an alien crash-landing in Hawaii The movie was filmed on Oahu, employing local talent on and off the screen Hawaii-born talent Tia Carrere, Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong tell PEOPLE about the film's authentic representation of the islandsLilo & Stitch is back, now in live-action form. Whereas Disney's 2002 animated hit came to life in 2D, the studio's 2025 version immerses audiences in the beauty of Hawaii, Lilo's homeland, filmed on location. For Oahu-born Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the original and returns as new character Mrs. Kekoa, authentically representing Hawaiian culture was crucial. 'It's important because it's the stuff that you feel when you're there,' the actress, 58, tells PEOPLE. 'And if it's missing, you would have been like, 'That doesn't sound [or look] right.' ' Because authentic representation was also a goal for director Dean Fleischer Camp and Chris Sanders — co-creator of the 2002 original and returning as the mischievous blue alien's voice — Carrere jumped back into the world of Lilo & Stitch with enthusiasm. 'That's why I was so excited when I first met with these guys,' she recalls of early talks about the remake. 'We had dinner and I got to talk about, 'Hey, can I do the part with pidgin English?'' Lilo, Nani and each of their neighbors should 'sound like a local,' Carrere says. Filmed on the island of Oahu (although set on Kauai), the new Lilo & Stitch brought kamaʻāina, or native-born, talent in front of and behind the camera. Maia Kealoha, the newcomer who plays Lilo, hails from the Big Island of Hawaii; Sydney Agudong, playing Lilo's sister Nani, is from Kauai; Kaipo Dudoit, who plays their neighbor David, is from Oahu; Hawaii-raised Jason Scott Lee (who voiced David in the animated original) returns as a luau manager. Also making the jump from animated original to live-action remake is much of the music, from Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu and The Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus to songs from Elvis Presley — and a new cover of "Burning Love" produced by Oahu-born Bruno Mars. Queen Liliʻuokalani's famous folk song, "Aloha ʻOe,' is sung by Kealoha and Agudong as a duet in a poignant scene. 'I'm all for organic authenticity,' Agudong, 24, tells PEOPLE. When it comes to stories set and filmed in Hawaii, 'you don't get to see that often.' Plus, throughout filming, she was a quick plane ride from her family on Kauai. 'I [felt] like I was already home on Oahu,' Agudong says, 'expanding that community and my friendships. Because it was already such in my heart and soul.' She adds, 'Hawaii is extremely talented. … To finally get a platform that showcases that, it was absolutely amazing to see. I really hope that it will spark more of that in the future.' Kealoha, 8, chimes in: 'Yeah! And I hope that I get more acting [jobs] in Hawaii again.' (The young actress stars in the upcoming Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista action-comedy The Wrecking Crew, filmed partially in Hawaii.) Carrere says she feels 'grateful' for the opportunity to transport audiences to an authentic depiction of Hawaii. 'I was so happy to be invited to the conversation,' says the Grammy winner. 'I think local people [are] happy to be seen and represented on screen that way.' Lilo & Stitch, also starring Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Courtney B. Vance and Amy Hill, is in theaters now. Eight-year-old Hawaiian breakout star Maia Kealoha makes her debut as Lilo Pelekai, while Sydney Agudong plays Lilo's older sister Nani. 'It's a family film. That's why there's longevity and timelessness to it because its themes are timeless,' Agudong told Deadline. "The way that the movie is based in Hawaii is perfect because I feel there's no better place to represent family in the way that I think it doesn't matter if you're related by blood or if you come from a different country or what you look like. You're always going to find somewhere that you belong." Lilo & Stitch is slated to have an impressive four-day opening weekend at the box office.
