Cold Climate Dogs: These are 10 breeds of adorable dog that cope with arctic temperatures

We're officially a nations of dog owners, with the UK's most popular pet living in around one-in-three households (and rising). That means that there are around three million pooches living here, with more people choosing to join the army of dog lovers every week. There are a whopping 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds, so there's plenty of thinking to do before you select your family's latest addition. There's even academic guidance to seek out, with Psychologist Stanley Coren's book 'The Intelligence of Dogs' ranking breeds by instincts, obedience, and the ability to adapt. Choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don't have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies. One thing to take into consideration is that some dogs have been bred specifically to cope with – or even enjoy – living in a cold climate. These hardy breeds will think nothing of long walks in snow and sub-zero temperatures, so if you have an ourdoorsy lifestyle they are the pups that should feature high up on your canine wish list. Here are the 10 breeds of dog that thrive in cold conditions. 1 . Tibetan Mastiff Originating in the towering Himalaya mountains, the Tibetan Mastiff has a winter coat and a summer coat, meaning they can cope with all extremes of weather. Bred to pull slades over vast distances of arctic tundra, this is a dog that can cope with anything the weather can throw at them. Photo: Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Newfoundland With its thick black hair and hefty body, the Newfoundland can cope with the harshest of conditions. They are particularly well known for saving people from water - able to safely swim in the iciest rivers, lakes and seas. Photo: Photo: Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Chow Chow The Chow Chow's luxurious and thick coat makes them look like a friendly lion and makes them seemingly impervious to dropping temperatures. Originally bred to guard royal palaces in their native China, they are quite happy to spend the majority of their time outside. Photo: Photo: Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales

Guard Dogs 2025: Here are 18 of the best - and worse - breeds of dog to protect your home - from brave Rottweiler to useless Labrador 🐶

We're a nation of dog lovers, with around one-in-three households including at least one four-legged friend . By far the most popular pet in the UK, they make for wonderful companions, all the while improving both our mental and physical health - and that's a scientific fact. The army of dog owners continues to grow, with 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds . Choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don't have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies. There's also always the option of adopting a dog from a dog shelter for a minimal fee - for example from the Dogs Trust . One thing you might like to consider when it comes to picking a pup is what roles you want them to carry out. While some potential owners are happy just to have a friendly pet that will curl up next to them on the couch, some want them to help make themselves feel safe in their own home (although the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive). Certain dogs have literally been bred to guard humans and their properties from threats - while others will easily be distracted by a sausage. Here are 18 of the best - and worst - guard dog breeds. 1 . German Shepherd Starting with the best dogs to guard your home and family - and the brest breed for the job. When most people think of a guard dog they are probably picturing a German Shepherd - and for good reason. Popular with the army and police, if one of these dogs don't want you around, you'll quickly know about it. On the flip side, they are also very affectionate dogs who are great with kids. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Tibetan Mastiff A lion would be a great animal to guard a house, but the authorities take a dim view of postmen being eaten. The next best thing is the luxuriantly-maned Tibetan Mastiff, with their distinctive thick coat designed for cold mountainous climates. Used to guard Tibetan temples in their native country, they will repel unwanted guests with extreme ferocity before cuddling up next to you on the couch. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Chihuahua Don't tell the Chihuahua that it's a tiny dog - they THINK they're enormous. Incredibly alert, these cracking watch dogs will be instantly vocal if they feel threatened and can be surprisingly ferocious. This is a dog whose bark is probably as bad as its bite in the right circumstances. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Australian Shepherd An interesting fact about the Australian Shepherd is that it's not from Australia - having been originally bred in the USA. Wherever it's from, it makes a similarly good guard dog as its German counterpart. It was traditionally bred to herd and protect livestock from predators. That instinct is easily transferred to its home and human family. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales

Tibetan Mastiff To Chow Chow: 5 Most Expensive Dogs In The World And How Much They Cost

Last Updated: While many adorable canines are available at reasonable costs, a select few command eye-watering prices due to their rarity, unique characteristics, and impeccable pedigrees. Dogs greet us with wagging tails, shower us with slobbery kisses, and fill our lives with immeasurable joy. The furry canines hold a very special place in our hearts, and they time and again prove why they are called man's best friends. But for those dreaming of welcoming a furry friend into their homes, the price tag of certain breeds might just scare you. While many adorable canines are available at reasonable costs, a select few command eye-watering prices due to their rarity, unique characteristics, and impeccable pedigrees. We are talking about the highly sought-after breeds that turn heads but also empty wallets. You must be thinking, what makes these dogs so special? Why do they come with such a hefty price tag, and which furry friends sit at the top of the expensive dogs list?' So, let's sniff out some of the most expensive dog breeds and what makes them so incredibly special. Tibetan Mastiff Topping the list of the most expensive dog breeds is the Tibetan Mastiff. Be prepared to be amazed and perhaps a little bit shocked as the price tags attached to these canines range from as low as $2,000 to millions. Yes, we aren't kidding. Native to China and Nepal, this ancient breed was originally developed to guard sheep in the Himalayas against wolves and leopards. They are also among the largest dog breeds in the world, with males weighing up to 160 pounds. Tibetan Mastiffs are relatively healthy, but note that they are prone to hereditary conditions like hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and eye anomalies. It is worth noting that a Chinese businessman gave $1.95 million for a Tibetan Mastiff puppy in 2014, making the Tibetan Mastiff the most expensive dog in the world. Lowcen Also known as the 'little lion dog", the Löwchen is another rare dog breed that comes at a hefty price. Originating in Europe, these small yet energetic dogs are very playful, which makes them perfect for families and children. Its distinctive haircut, charming appearance and lively personality make them cost around $12,000 (Rs 10 lakh). While it's on the most expensive dog list, these little dogs are surprisingly healthy and can live for 13-15 years. Chow Chow Originating from northern China, the Chow Chow is one of the oldest and rarest breeds in the world. The dog itself is expensive to buy, but the costs to own a Chow Chow don't stop there. You'll rack up the bills for food, treats, vet bills, grooming, and health issues. The life range is 8-12 years but can be increased with proper care. Moreover, they require a decent amount of regular exercise, such as four or more walks per day. Coming to their price, it can go up to $11,000 (approximately 9 lakh). Rottweilers This one might surprise you because Rottweilers are a more common breed than the others on this list. But yes, a purebred Rottweiler from an authentic German breeder can cost up to $9,000. There are chances to find these breeds for quite a bit cheaper from breeders in the US, ranging anywhere from $1,500 to $4,500. While they're not crazy expensive to buy, they rack up money in vet bills due to health issues. The breed, with a lifespan of only 8-10 years, is extremely susceptible to almost every single disease and/or cancer for dogs, especially hip and joint issues. First Published:
