State announces NY Forward projects for Canton
May 15—CANTON — Gov. Kathleen C. Hochul announced $4.5 million in state funding Thursday for five revitalization projects in Canton to boost the village's downtown area. The funding, awarded through the NY Forward program, will support projects focused on creating a regional destination with diverse housing, arts and cultural attractions, local businesses and recreational offerings. The projects include: — $2 million to redevelop the former Midtown Plaza into a mixed-use space featuring housing, an entrepreneurship center, and community amenities. — $1,096,000 to upgrade the Village Green with improved pathways, lighting, seating, and plantings. — $807,000 to transform a partially vacant building on Riverside Drive into a commercial fitness center and studio. — $497,000 to expand Nature's Storehouse on Main Street into a community health hub. — $100,000 to upgrade the TAUNY Center to improve accessibility and functionality. Canton Mayor and Local Planning Committee Co-Chair Michael E. Dalton expressed gratitude for the funding, saying the projects represent investments that "leverage public and private commitment in our community." He also credited local residents for their work in developing the project recommendations. The New York Forward Local Planning Committee, which consisted of Dalton, Kathryn A. Morris, co-chair, North Country REDC co-chair and St. Lawrence University president; Josh Vink, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York; Brian Coakley, North Country Savings Bank; Ariane Palmer, Palmer Real Estate; Connie Jenkins, Canton Church and Community Program; Katie Berry, St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce; Dave Nelson, United Helpers; and Kirk Davis, Con Tech Building, started meeting in May of 2024 to develop a strategic investment plan for the state money. That plan was submitted to the Department of State last November. The committee picked nine projects worth about $8 million, for the state will reduce to $4.5 million. The four projects that did not make the cut included: — Upgrade of the Riverside Drive streetscape and Gouverneur Street gateway signs — The Tick Tock revival — Establish a small project fund — Canton branding and marketing initiative "A lot of effort went into this," Dalton said of the committee's work. Dalton said the final decision was up to the state and all the projects submitted were worthy. "There's other money out there and we will pursue it," he said. Clark and Yen Maine of Nature's Storehouse said they had been working on the plan while waiting to hear about the funding and plan on closing on the building next door, where the expansions will happen next month. "We can start getting some more detailed architectural plans and get contractors lined up once we get the grant letter," Clark Maine said Yen Maine said they will post on social media soon, asking customers for suggestions. "I know people have plenty of thoughts," she said. Clark Maine said they had been working on other grants and were determined to find a way to complete the project even if the New York Forward money didn't work out. "This (expansion) is really important to Nature's and to the Canton Community," he said

Trade War Stokes Nationalism in Chinese Media, Internet
00:00 Newspapers, including the People's Daily, have published the full text of China's so-called white paper that's outlining its official position on trade relations with the US. The document accuses Washington of failing to meet its obligations under the Phase one trade deal signed in 2020 and undermining economic and trade ties. Meanwhile, you have the Global Times, and today I think the version today, in addition to the blasting, what it calls us unilateralism, saying it infringes another country's right to develop. It also warns that the the, quote, selfish and short sighted approach will ultimately backfire. Let's bring in our China correspondent below to talk us through this. You know, this white paper and the finer points, just take us through what what those are and perhaps the big picture there. Yeah, it's a very lengthy document, close to 50 pages, six chapters full of anecdotes, example, statistics, evidence to show how China has earnestly fulfilled the terms of the phase one trade deal and how the US has it. So examples include how China had opposed forced tech transfers from US companies to Chinese companies, how it has opened up some of its markets and how it has maintained the stability of the UN. And then in terms of how China had failed to keep up and maintain its pledge on buying a certain amount of U.S. goods, it said that it was because the pandemic has caused US production levels to fall below pre-pandemic levels that prevented China from buying up the amount they had initially pledged. They also said that US prices were uncompetitive and it didn't make sense for Chinese producers to buy things at higher prices from the US when they can get it cheaper from other countries. And that it cited how US failed to keep up its end of the bargain, including how, for example, the US had sort of put pressure on Chinese tech transfers, citing Tick Tock as an example how it has placed restrictions on Chinese related investments, export controls and the like, and also say how China really wasn't deliberate in trying to maintain a trade surplus with the United States. And that, you know, you look at how the US trade deficit has grown globally, the proportion attributed to China had actually fallen. So that's the argument. So in plain speaking to say, look, we China, we've been the good kid, we fulfilled our end of the bargain. US You've been a bit kid, but you know what? We're still going to be reasonable. We want to have dialogue if you are ready to do so. But if not, then we will, quote, fight to the end. So what are the the reactions being on social media then, to this? Yeah, there's so much chatter on social media. Seven of the top ten topics on Weibo today had been about those tariffs. And as expected, there had been a lot of very nationalistic comments. So people saying that, you know, our ancestors, our forefathers didn't bow down. Why should we bend our you know, we shouldn't leave this battle to our next generation. You know, and the Chinese people, it's like they're the next generation. They're really hunkering down for an epic battle battle. And another comments saying that Trump tried to kick the steel plant down and how he has hurt his feet. Here is a sarcastic one. Manufacturing is back to the US within three days. It is laughable. I thought I was watching an epic war movie, but it turns out to be comedy. Also a rallying cries as well. The next comment here is saying, you know, support the country, support the party. The impact of this is going to be big by really attacking the country for letting us straighten our backs and giving us the confidence. And we want to show the country that nobody else is more united than the Chinese people. And it's interesting, instead of, you know, slightly inciting social instability because of the economic hit, the tariff war is actually causing the Chinese people to call us together and rally together against this enemy, which is the United States.
