State announces NY Forward projects for Canton
The funding, awarded through the NY Forward program, will support projects focused on creating a regional destination with diverse housing, arts and cultural attractions, local businesses and recreational offerings.
The projects include:
— $2 million to redevelop the former Midtown Plaza into a mixed-use space featuring housing, an entrepreneurship center, and community amenities.
— $1,096,000 to upgrade the Village Green with improved pathways, lighting, seating, and plantings.
— $807,000 to transform a partially vacant building on Riverside Drive into a commercial fitness center and studio.
— $497,000 to expand Nature's Storehouse on Main Street into a community health hub.
— $100,000 to upgrade the TAUNY Center to improve accessibility and functionality.
Canton Mayor and Local Planning Committee Co-Chair Michael E. Dalton expressed gratitude for the funding, saying the projects represent investments that "leverage public and private commitment in our community." He also credited local residents for their work in developing the project recommendations.
The New York Forward Local Planning Committee, which consisted of Dalton, Kathryn A. Morris, co-chair, North Country REDC co-chair and St. Lawrence University president; Josh Vink, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York; Brian Coakley, North Country Savings Bank; Ariane Palmer, Palmer Real Estate; Connie Jenkins, Canton Church and Community Program; Katie Berry, St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce; Dave Nelson, United Helpers; and Kirk Davis, Con Tech Building, started meeting in May of 2024 to develop a strategic investment plan for the state money.
That plan was submitted to the Department of State last November.
The committee picked nine projects worth about $8 million, for the state will reduce to $4.5 million.
The four projects that did not make the cut included:
— Upgrade of the Riverside Drive streetscape and Gouverneur Street gateway signs
— The Tick Tock revival
— Establish a small project fund
— Canton branding and marketing initiative
"A lot of effort went into this," Dalton said of the committee's work.
Dalton said the final decision was up to the state and all the projects submitted were worthy.
"There's other money out there and we will pursue it," he said.
Clark and Yen Maine of Nature's Storehouse said they had been working on the plan while waiting to hear about the funding and plan on closing on the building next door, where the expansions will happen next month.
"We can start getting some more detailed architectural plans and get contractors lined up once we get the grant letter," Clark Maine said
Yen Maine said they will post on social media soon, asking customers for suggestions.
"I know people have plenty of thoughts," she said.
Clark Maine said they had been working on other grants and were determined to find a way to complete the project even if the New York Forward money didn't work out.
"This (expansion) is really important to Nature's and to the Canton Community," he said

Bitcoin Mining Gets A Major Power Boost. Here's What Comes Next
The U.S. bitcoin mining industry just got its most disruptive upgrade yet. On August 14, 2025, Block unveiled Proto Rig, a modular, repairable, and upgradable bitcoin mining system, alongside Proto Fleet, a free and open-source fleet management software platform. The announcement took place at Core Scientific's bitcoin mining facility in Dalton, Georgia, where Proto Rigs are already in use. It comes at a high point for the industry, just one day after Bitcoin hit a record $124,457.12 and 24 hours after crypto exchange Bullish's explosive IPO. Proto is owned by Block, co-founded by Jack Dorsey, the creator of Twitter (now X). Block's portfolio includes Square, Cash App, Afterpay, Tidal, and Bitkey. The timing could not be more telling. Institutional enthusiasm for digital assets is rising, and the U.S. regulatory climate has grown friendlier, even as the economics of mining face more pressure from bitcoin's quadrennial halving. In this environment, Block's launch of mining hardware and software reads as a deliberate bid to address the industry's deepest pain points. Chinese Bitcoin Mining Hardware Giants Shift To U.S. Production Amid Tariffs For more than a decade, the global bitcoin mining hardware market has been overwhelmingly dominated by Chinese manufacturers such as Bitmain and MicroBT, whose ASIC rigs account for the vast majority of machines in operation worldwide. These units are known for high hash power but typically designed as short-lived, single-use machines that are expensive to replace, difficult to repair, and offer little flexibility for upgrades. The three largest Chinese bitcoin mining manufacturers are setting up U.S. production to avoid newly imposed tariffs from President Donald Trump. Together, they control over 90% of the global market, raising U.S. security concerns about reliance on Chinese hardware in critical crypto infrastructure. Block's Proto Rig Promises Decade-Long Lifespan And Game-Changing Mining Efficiency Proto Rig flips the current model on its head, offering a 10-year lifespan with modular hashboards, 90-second tool-free repairs, and upgrades on the operator's schedule. It delivers 1.5 times the power efficiency per foot of rack space and is compatible with both modern and legacy infrastructure, eliminating costly retrofits. 'Mining hardware hasn't really changed in years,' said Thomas Templeton, Block's hardware lead. 'Machines break often, are hard to repair, expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and don't make the most efficient use of power or space. With Rig, we set out to change all of that — and contribute to hardware decentralization in the process.' By treating mining equipment as infrastructure instead of disposable gear, Block is giving operators a way to smooth capital expenditures over a longer period. For miners facing revenue cuts every four years, the ability to extend the lifecycle of a rig from three to five years to a decade could prove transformative. Free Open-Source Proto Fleet Software Launches To Modernize Bitcoin Mining Operations Proto Fleet promises to be just as groundbreaking as the hardware. This open-source software brings power scaling, diagnostics, monitoring, and maintenance into one streamlined platform. It is free for any miner to use, with or without Proto hardware. 'Mining hasn't really caught up with advances in software more broadly,' Templeton said. 'We saw an opportunity to make mining software something modern that improves operational efficiency instead of unnecessarily complicating things.' Open-sourcing Proto Fleet means anyone from large-scale operations to small independent miners can build on it, customize it, and improve it for the broader community. It marks a clear break from the closed and opaque software models that have long dominated the space. Proto Takes On Chinese Dominance In Bitcoin Mining Hardware U.S.-based Block is challenging the long-standing monopoly Chinese companies have held over bitcoin mining hardware, a dominance that has fueled security and supply chain concerns. While Proto has not disclosed its manufacturing locations, the move could open the door to new competitors, spur innovation, lower costs, and lessen reliance on a single source for critical mining infrastructure. How Bitcoin Miners Survive The 2028 Halving The mining business is uniquely cyclical. Every four years, the bitcoin halving cuts block rewards in half, instantly reducing miner revenue unless offset by higher bitcoin prices or operational efficiencies. The next bitcoin halving is scheduled for April 2028. Proto Rig's efficiency gains and lifecycle extension directly address this challenge. Lower repair costs, minimal downtime, and the ability to upgrade hashboards instead of entire units help miners preserve margins in a tightening reward environment. The open-source Proto Fleet software further supports this by streamlining operations and optimizing energy usage. Combined, these factors could make the difference between profitability and shutdown for some operators, especially in competitive energy markets. Potential Ripple Effects For The U.S. Bitcoin Mining Industry The debut of Proto Rig and Proto Fleet has the potential to shift dynamics in the bitcoin mining sector. If the hardware gains traction, it could encourage competition in a market long dominated by Chinese manufacturers, possibly lowering prices and expanding options. More durable and efficient rigs might help U.S. miners grow operations and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains. By offering open-source, free-to-use software, Block could also lower barriers for smaller miners, which may foster greater network decentralization and inspire advances in efficiency and energy integration. Bitcoin Record High And Bullish NYSE Debut Set The Stage For Proto's Newest Launch The unveiling of Proto Rig and Proto Fleet comes amid strong momentum in the crypto industry. Just a day earlier, Peter Thiel-backed exchange Bullish, led by former NYSE president Tom Farley, began trading on the NYSE, raising $1.1 billion. Pair that with Bitcoin's new all-time high, and Block's timing is ideal. The company is positioning itself not just as a hardware maker but as a strategic infrastructure provider for Bitcoin's next phase of growth, for all the players in the mining industry. 'What's Good For Bitcoin Is Good for All of Us' The energy at Proto's launch made it clear that Jack Dorsey and his team know how to deliver game-changing moments for Bitcoin. 'What's good for Bitcoin is good for all of us,' Thomas Templeton said in closing, summing up the ethos behind Proto's design. For miners, Proto Rig and Proto Fleet may offer a path to higher uptime, lower costs, and greater operational control. For U.S. based miners, this pivotal design advancement marks a shift toward open, collaborative innovation and away from reliance on a single country's manufacturing base. In a market grappling with shrinking margins and mounting energy scrutiny, the launch underscores that the sector's next significant advancements may be forged in the open.

Perplexity's Google Chrome offer may be a PR stunt aimed at Apple
Perplexity ( is offering $34.5 billion to buy Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google Chrome business. Alphabet could be forced to sell Google Chrome as part of an antitrust resolution, but Wall Street seems to be dismissing Perplexity as a serious potential Chrome buyer, given that the reported offer is greater than the artificial intelligence (AI) startup's $18 billion valuation. Chamber of Progress CEO and founder, Adam Kovacevich, and Freedom Capital Markets managing director, Paul Meeks, join Market Catalysts to discuss. Kovacevich says Perplexity is "selling headlines, not buying browsers," while Meeks adds that this may be part of the company's rumored strategy to sell itself to Apple (AAPL). To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts. perplexity is making a bid to acquire Google's Chrome browser for thirty four and a half billion dollars that's at least according to reports out there. The AI startup only worth about 18 billion dollars according to its latest funding rounds. So some of the funds would have to come from outside investors, it was an unsolicited offer, and it comes ahead of US antitrust proceedings that could force alphabet to sell the well web browser. It seems like most of the street is not seeing this as terribly realistic, but I want to talk about sort of how this fits into the broader AI landscape. Adam Kovac which is with us now as well chamber progress, CEO and founder Paul Meeks of Freedom Capital markets is still with me as well, and Adam as we look at the AI landscape here. Perplexity is not as much of a household name within AI is this just a marketing move on its part? Yeah, I think their hottest product is publicity. I think these offers keep Wall Street buzzing without them having to spend a dime. You know, one week, uh, we hear that the big tech wants to buy perplexity, the next week they're kind of swaggering in as a potential buyer back in March. They said they, you know, they were, we're putting in a bid to uh, to buy tick tock. Tick Tock wasn't for sale. Uh, I think the press clip is the point, right? As you noted, um, the the value of Chrome is double or more than perplexity's own value, and the check would be bigger than the balance sheet. I think you're selling headlines, not buying browsers, but look, I mean I think founders know that swagger can kind of goose valuations, uh, getting their name uttered in the same breath as Chrome kind of signals Big League, right? It sets a higher price uh, for if someone tries to scoop you up, and let's face it, it kind of worked. We're here talking about perplexity, aren't we? Right? So unfortunately for them, it's not about how valuable their core product is. Well, but Paul, you know, when you look at the Chrome situation, the Alphabet situation, um, do you think that they are going to be forced to spin off Chrome? I mean we've talked to some analysts who say even if they do, it's not necessarily a bad thing for Alphabet. I agree that it won't necessarily be a bad thing, but I think when you get to the end of the day, I don't think that the Feds are going to force uh, the divestiture. So this uh, deal or proposed deal by perplexity AI so premature, the other thing that's going on with perplexity AI, though I do think perplexity AI is a real deal company is it's rumored that they may sell themselves to Apple. And so you want to crank up the PR machine to drive up your valuation so Apple takes you out at bigger price. So I think that might also be at play here. Why The Best Salespeople Think Like Strategists, Not Search Engines
B.D. Dalton II, Lazy Overachiever, deal-maker, author and podcast host of Grow Sell and Retire, Director at Rockfine Group. In an era where ChatGPT can answer questions in seconds, I believe the real competitive advantage has shifted from having all the answers to asking the questions your competitors can't or won't. Remember when the "always be closing" mantra from Glengary Glen Ross ruled the sales world? Well, those days are dead, buried under an avalanche of AI-generated insights and instant Google searches. Instead, welcome to the era of ABQ: Asking better questions. But this isn't another soft-skill sermon. This is about weaponizing curiosity to create competitive advantages that AI can't replicate and competitors can't copy. The Instant Answer Paradox Your prospects know more about your product, competitors and options than ever before. They've already read the case studies, compared pricing and stalked your LinkedIn profile. By the time they're talking to you, they're not looking for information—they're looking for transformation. Yet I find that most salespeople are still playing the old game, armed with feature lists and benefit statements, wondering why their "consultative selling" feels like interrogation. The problem? We're asking the wrong questions. The Three Questions That Change Everything After analyzing what separates lazy overachievers from hard-working underperformers, I've identified three question frameworks that I see consistently unlock opportunities others may miss: "If we could solve [specific challenge] , what would you do with all that time, energy and focus you're currently spending on this problem?" Past understanding pain points, it's about understanding potential. I find that most salespeople focus on the cost of the problem. But smart salespeople focus on the opportunity cost of not solving it. When a CEO tells me they'd "finally focus on strategic planning instead of putting out fires," I'm hearing their vision for growth and the transformation they're really buying. You can only save so much. Your job is to help find profit elsewhere. "If we could model your [process/approach] after any company from a completely different industry, who would it be and why?" This reveals their aspirational identity while bypassing industry tunnel vision. I once asked a struggling restaurant owner this question. His answer? "Amazon's fulfillment centers. They make complex logistics look effortless." That conversation led to implementing systems that transformed his operation. He wasn't buying software; he was buying his Amazon moment. "What's the one question your biggest competitor would love to know about your business?" This simultaneously reveals a leader's competitive advantages, strategic thinking depth and intelligence they're protecting. The follow-up then opens wallets: "How would strengthening this advantage change your market position?" The Real Job Description Your job isn't to sell products or services. Your job is to make your clients look smarter, better, faster and even freer. When you ask the energy redistribution question, you're showing them how to be faster by eliminating inefficiencies. When you explore their industry envy, you're helping them become better by adopting best practices from unexpected places. When you uncover their competitive intelligence, you're making them smarter about their own strategic advantages. And when you help them envision the transformation? You're offering them freedom—freedom from current limitations, freedom to pursue bigger opportunities, freedom to become the leader they aspire to be. Why ABQ Leverages What AI Still Can't Do Recent research from Apple reveals AI's persistent struggles with empathy, logic and rationalization. These are the exact skills that separate great salespeople from order-takers. Artificial intelligence can process information, but it can't process intention. It can analyze data, but it can't rationalize dreams with reality. It can provide answers, but it can't empathetically guide someone through the logic of transformation. This isn't about competing with AI; it's about leveraging the uniquely human capabilities that AI can help amplify. When you ask better questions, you're using empathy to understand unspoken needs to help prospects justify the transformation they already want. In my experience, the questions above work because they're not seeking information—they're seeking transformation. They're about finding out who your prospects want to become. A Guide To Implementation Here's some ways to implement ABQ by leveraging AI for research while reserving the human touch for transformation. Before the meeting: • Use AI (and other sources) to research their industry's transformation stories and pain points. • Identify and research their competitors to understand the competitive landscape. • Identify two to three companies from other industries facing similar challenges. • Let AI help you map potential energy redistribution scenarios based on their business model. During the conversation: • Lead with curiosity informed by intelligence, not information dumps. • Build off AI-gathered insights to ask deeper, more relevant questions. • Position yourself as the architect of their transformation, not the researcher of their industry. • Let your preparation show through question quality (again, not data regurgitation). After the meeting: • Reference their aspirational comparisons in your proposal. • Use AI to help craft compelling narratives around their transformation journey. • Frame your solution as their bridge to that evolution, supported by industry intelligence. The New Sales Reality In a world where information is abundant but transformation is rare, I believe the salespeople who will thrive are those who can help prospects envision and achieve their next level of evolution. Your competitors are still asking about budget, authority, need and timeline. While they're collecting data points, you'll be collecting transformation stories. Overall, it's time we recognize that our prospects don't need another vendor with answers. They need a partner with questions—the right questions that unlock possibilities they hadn't considered. The future of sales is about asking the questions that make your competitors' answers irrelevant. In an age of instant answers, the right questions are your ultimate competitive advantage. "What question would make your prospects forget about your competitors?" Forbes Business Council is the foremost growth and networking organization for business owners and leaders. Do I qualify?
