John Brogden claims the top spot and the Fred Moss Memorial Trophy
There were fantastic turnouts in respect of past members last weekend as many anglers from all over the region took part in competitions held by two of our local angling associations. First and more locally, a celebration took place on Saturday for one of the Liverpool & District AA's angling greats and a past chairman with that, Fred Moss. For this one match secretary Mike Dickson once again put together another superb open match in which many anglers who knew Fred personally, travelled far and wide to Maghull for the draw held at the MCA. With canal in fine form, particularly upon the noted areas of late, Wirral's Alan Dewhurst's emphatic win on Wednesday with a great catch of bream and skimmers for 36.8.0, alerted not only our visitors, but the many local Liverpool rods participating who were all sure to be looking to sit on a few fish in order to hopefully enjoy a great day's fishing like Dewhurst had experienced midweek. This one, which was pegged out through Maghull, was a match in which many regulars looked for a favoured draw on some historically good areas in which bream inhabit and there was no doubt at all that one or two of the field would be relishing a chance of a decent draw on the day. READ MORE: More than 100 Easter Eggs donated by anglers at the Liverpool & District Angling Association Good Friday Open Taking advantage of just that was Matrix Leigh Tackle & Bait rod John Brogden, and here landing himself on a noted peg on Maghull's cricket pitch area, Brogden made the most of it with no mistakes on taking the best weight of the day for 13.10.0 and of course the Fred Moss Memorial Trophy. Next, taking a ride out along the East Lancashire Road to Carr Mill at St Helens on Monday, this was another match that saw many anglers taking part visiting from all over the region, including yours truly, all to also share their thoughts of another past member who was also very fondly respected, Dez Lowcock. As many will recognise, this huge natural expanse of water looking out to Billinge is a terrific venue. It's full of many species of fish including double figure carp and huge bream shoals along with roach, perch and the odd tench that are rare but present. So with nearly 50 anglers present to honour Dezzy on this one, this match was spread across the venue with many options open for everyone with regards to a personal approach. One man who doesn't need any confidence on Carr Mill is Local St Helens rod Peter Tickle. A winner on many occasions within his angling career, Tickle's knowledge on the dam is second to none particularly when looking at the present form as a guide. In this one Tickle drew a very much favoured area and with a presence of mind on his approach, he made no bones about how he was going to tackle it. Opting for a long pole approach at 15 metres and a 'back-up' of using an open ended feeder on the tip, Tickle took bream, skimmers and an unexpected 3lb tench for an overall winning weight of 17.4.0 to pick up the now coveted Dez Lowcock Memorial Shield. In second place was Steve Mitchell, who, pegged nearby on peg 8, took skimmers for 11.8.0 which closely outdid Royton's Jim Evans's 11lb third place effort. Manchester's Mark Harris and Skelmersdale's Steve Wooding took 8lb for joint fourth position. More than 100 Easter Eggs donated by anglers at the Liverpool & District Angling Association Good Friday Open
It was a superb effort by anglers attending the Liverpool & District Angling Association Good Friday Open. Held on the canal over the Easter break, competitors booked on with a hand delivered Easter Egg. Match secretary Mike Dickson does an incredible job raising funds for many charities that the L&DAA supports throughout the year. He put this together again with the aim to assist teams within Sefton Council family centres reaching out to support families and more than 100 eggs were delivered to two centres, which were very gratefully received. On the match itself, and with the canal starting to show some promise now that the warmer weather is beginning to show some form, this one had nearly 50 anglers turning out – stretching from the drum's at Lydiate, back to Westway Bridge at the end of the duck length. Taking the top honours on the day and making his way all the way from Oswestry was a familiar name as a winner over here in Merseyside, Gordon Griffiths. Pegged on the popular Running Horses Length near the famous pub itself, Griffiths made no mistake from this fancied area as he put together a class performance, taking 11.4.0 of skimmers and roach. Skelmersdale's John Carroll, who was pegged on the drum's length on an area that was slightly more open to the gusts of wind, was rewarded with the second best catch on this one as he took a mixed bag which included a couple of bonus skimmers for 6.12.13. In an incredibly tight finish, it was one that saw just drams in it on splitting the frame. Staying with the canal scene, the L&DAA will be holding a memorial match for past chairman Fred Moss on Saturday, May 3 2025. Draw time is 9am at the MCA at Green Lane Maghull and all are welcome. Once again, Mike Dickson will be holding his 'Dicko's raffle' that everyone involved enjoys so much as part of the day's celebrations. On the club front, catching up with one of Merseyside's most popular outfits, the Alliance & Leicester stayed at their home venue at Chapel Pool on Sunday to enjoy another great match on this superb venue. Winner on the day was club stalwart Richard Bamber. Bamber stuck to a tip approach with pellet to take carp for the top club points on the day for 63.1.0. Gary Green took second place with 54.11.0 and Dave Langton a close third with 53.13.0. Also on Sunday, St Helens AA held their annual two-day memorial for a past member Joe Lee, with the second leg on Monday. With another great turn out, this one was about the competitors using their aggregate weights over the two days. Making the most of it was St Helens local Peter Tickle. Tickle took the top weight of the day on Sunday with 13.8.0 and Monday following that on taking a section win with 7.10.0. Overall Tickle's 21.2.0 was enough to take the top honours and the coveted trophy. Winning the match with a superb 16lb on Monday, St Helens rod Phil Holland put that on top of his previous day's catch of just 3.6.0 to put together a second overall 19.6.0. Repository entertainment writer Ed Balint runs down things to do in the Canton area while highlighting news in the local arts scene. Comedians Glen Tickle and Ricky Glore will perform May 16 at the Roxy Theatre in downtown Minerva. Krackpots Comedy Club of Massillon is presenting the show at 7:30 p.m. Tickle and Glore both have "Dry Bar Comedy" specials, and each has appeared on SiriusXM, a news release said. Glore also has appeared on "The Bob & Tom Show," and Tickle released a special on Amazon Prime and has appeared on NPR and PBS. Tickets ($27.75 general admission and $49.25 VIP) can be purchased at Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Roxy Theatre is at 114 N. Market St. "Newsies" opens May 16 at Players Guild Theatre on the campus of Kent State University at Stark in Jackson Township. Canton Ballet dancers collectively earned more than $75,000 in scholarships at the recent Regional Dance America Northeast Festival in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Giada Szekeres, a junior at Lake High School, received a $60,000 collegiate scholarship to the American Music and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Szekeres was selected through a competitive audition process, according to a news release from Canton Ballet. Szekeres will attend Ballet Arizona this summer. Freshman Kaitlyn Giltz and junior Ashlyn Wood, both students at Jackson High School, will be participating in an intensive summer program at the School of American Ballet in New York City. Joining them in securing competitive placements are Madison Fabek, a sophomore at Central Catholic High School, and Maria Carosello, a junior at GlenOak High School, both of whom have spots at the Miami City Ballet, the news release said. 'We are incredibly proud of our dancers' achievements at the Regional Dance America Festival and in securing these prestigious scholarships and summer intensive placements,' said Canton Ballet Director Jennifer Catazaro Hayward. 'Their success is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the rigorous training and guidance they receive from our exceptional teaching faculty. These opportunities are vital stepping stones in their development as dancers.' The Performing Arts Center at Kent State University at Tuscarawas plans a new summer movie series. Beginning June 24 with "Wicked," the venue in New Philadelphia will feature movie musicals on the Performing Arts Center's 43-x-24-foot screen. Movies will be shown weekly at 7 p.m. Tuesdays. Attendees will receive free popcorn, with bottled water and candy available for purchase. Tickets cost $10 per movie, and a summer movie pass can be purchased for $60 (valid for eight admissions). Performing Arts Center members receive a discount of $5 per ticket. The movie schedule is: "Mamma Mia!," July 1; "La La Land," July 8; "Chicago," July 15; "Grease," July 22; "Moulin Rouge," July 29; "Waitress," Aug. 5; and "The Greatest Showman," Aug. 12. "Tour the solar system from the perspective of a visitor from another part of the galaxy," The Wilderness Center said. "... On Earth, we learn about lunar phases, lunar and solar eclipses, Earth's seasons and how they depend on Earth's axial tilt and its relationship to the sun. These concepts are woven together into a journey of exploration and discovery." The event is in the Astronomy Education Building at The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW in the Wilmot area. Tickets cost $4 for members and $6 for non-members. The show is for families and children age 8 and older. Pre-registering is suggested at Walk-ins are accepted but ticket payments must be in cash. A 'Tonight's Sky' program showing seasonal constellations and planets currently in the night sky will follow. Stark Parks will host a sunset hike at 8:30 p.m. May 16 on Hoover Trail, followed by a stargazing program with The Wilderness Center's Astronomy Club. The guided lantern hike will be one hour. Giggle CEO ‘confident' about court ruling appeal
Giggle Chief Executive Sall Grover discusses her appeal on the 'Giggle vs Tickle' Federal Court Case. A court decision ruled the women-only social media app Giggle had unlawfully discriminated against a transgender woman. 'I've always been really confident,' Ms Grover told Sky News Digital Presenter Gabriella Power. 'I actually think that the truth always wins.'

Sneak peek: Scotland's Home of the Year heads to Orkney
Ms Tickle fell in love with the harbourside home after spending a weekend on Orkney – but has it got the pizazz to be crowned Scotland's top house? Here she shares her thoughts on why she's taking part in SHOTY 2025 – and shares a sneak peak of her home before the episode airs on Monday. Scotland's Home of the Year is broadcast from 6:25pm on BBC One Scotland. The house site on Stromness Harbour (Image: BBC Scotland) How long have you lived at Harbour View? We purchased Harbour View in October 2019, but unfortunately, we weren't able to move into our home until August 2020, after the first Covid lock-down. The living room (Image: BBC Scotland) What first attracted you to the property? My son was living on Orkney and training to be a Dive Master, and it just so happened that I decided to take a weekend trip up to see him. He was lodging right next door at the time and that's when I noticed this amazing house on the waterfront! Lucky for us, it had just gone on the market. What's the history of the house? The house site had formerly been home to the old Stockan's Bakehouse which serviced the Scapa Flow fleets in both World Wars. It was purchased around 2010 by the original owners, who then spent approximately four years creating this award-winning home. The home was designed over three floors, with the top floor created as an artist's studio, hence the open flow, high-pitched ceilings and floor to ceiling windows. Unfortunately, the original owners had to sell for family health reasons and we were fortunate to be able to purchase Harbour View and turn it into a family home. A view inside the bedroom (Image: BBC Scotland) What's your favourite thing about it – and does it have any unusual features? It is so hard to decide on one favourite thing about Harbour View. I'm sure that there aren't many homeowners though who can say that they have seals in the garden – we do! Every floor of Harbour View has a unique feature: from the striking architecture and bold colours inside and out, the private pier in the garden, the free-standing bath in the guest bedroom, overlooking the harbour…the list is endless. What are your design and decorating inspirations? We have a crazy pace of life with busy jobs, so we wanted to create a calm and peaceful home which maximises the natural light and flexible space, where we can just switch off and watch the world sail by. It's all down to our friends and neighbours who encouraged us to apply! We didn't expect to get shortlisted for SHOTY, but we were delighted to be chosen.
