STV to air first-ever Coronation Street and Emmerdale crossover episode
STV is to air its first-ever crossover between Coronation Street and Emmerdale, with fans able to vote for the characters they would like to see meet and interact. The hour-long crossover episode will air in January 2026 as STV announces a new hour of soap schedule, which will see half hour Emmerdale episodes air at 8pm, followed by 30-minute episodes of Coronation Street at 8.30pm. Producers of the two soaps say the special episode will have 'everlasting consequences for everyone involved', saying the two shows' universes in Manchester and Yorkshire had been linked in an 'ingenious way'. They say the episode will be self-contained, but its events will have 'repercussions for both communities and see them linked forever as familiar faces depart and exciting new characters arrive into both soaps'. PA Media The characters of Coronation Street will meet those of Emmerdale in a new crossover episode (Dave Thompson/PA). PA Media From next month, fans will be able to vote on the soaps' Instagram, Facebook and TikTok accounts for the two characters they want to see interact. The new scheduling comes after STV said its research showed that 30-minute episodes attracted higher audiences in 2024. Coronation Street currently airs for three hour-long episodes a week, while Emmerdale's weekly schedule is made up of four 30-minute episodes plus one hour-long instalment, but from next year both soaps will only air 30-minute episodes. Episodes will continue to drop at 7am on STV Player, before they air in the evening. PA Media Producers say the two universes will be linked in an 'ingenious way' (Tim Whitby/PA). In pics: The Irish steal the show on BAFTAs red carpet
The Irish stole the show on the BAFTAs red carpet on Sunday night with the likes of Nicola Coughlan and Maura Higgins pulling out all the stops. The ceremony, which is being presented by Scottish actor Alan Cumming at London's Royal Festival Hall, will see ITV recognised with the BAFTA TV special award for commissioning post office drama Mr Bates. The drama helped focus attention on the subpostmasters who were wrongly prosecuted during the Horizon IT scandal, has six nominations and is also nominated in the memorable moment category. The ceremony is taking place, following US president Donald Trump proposing a 100% tariff on international films. BAFTA chief executive Jane Millichip called for more 'meaningful conversations' around Mr Trump's tariffs. Nicola Coughlan. Pic: Jeff Spicer/BAFTA/Getty Images for BAFTA 'I think the most important thing is, if you look at the history of film and television, the UK and the US have been in lockstep for decades, almost a whole century across film and TV,' she said. 'Culturally, we're so tied, and there is so much co-production happening, I think to unpick that will be like making eggs out of an omelette to be honest.' Una Healy. Pic: Stuart C. She is also up for a 'memorable moment' award for her unforgettable carriage scene in Netlfix hit Bridgerton. Check out all the glam from the BAFTA's red carpet below. Siobhan McSweeney.
