Maitland hosts 2025 NSW Motocross Championship round three on weekend

Maitland will host round three of the NSW Motocross Championships this weekend after a huge effort to get the track in order. Maitland District Motorcycle Club president Andrew Tipper is confident the track will be in top order for the third and final round of the NSW series on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1, Tipper said a 30mm fall on Monday had set back their efforts of drying out the track, but they were committed to having everything in order for the start of racing on Saturday morning. "We've got the gear to make the track happen. It's just how quickly we can get it to dry out. We were looking good, and then that 30mm Monday night really didn't help," he said. Tipper said they were on track to match competitor numbers from the first two rounds with 230 riders already registered. However, he wasn't sure if the MX1 series leader Dylan Wills will return in time from bike testing in Italy. "They correlate points across the three rounds. And then this final round, you obviously get your champions or your title holders," he said. Motorsport fans can expect high-flying action and close racing over the weekend with the main MX1 450cc series and other categories to be decided. Some of the best riders from NSW, the ACT, Queensland and Victoria are expected to take part in the the round, which is set to feature more than 230 riders. There will be racing in 18 categories ranging in age from six years to veterans. "We are particularly looking forward to hosting some of the most talented riders from across the country and from our own backyard who will battle it out for titles.," Tipper said. The club has a number of top 10 riders in the various categories including 30+veterans No.1 Aaron Parker, MX2 No.2 Cayden Gray, and MX3 No.3 Riley Burgess. Burgess and Brody Collins are second and third respectively in the 125cc 15-u17 series. Heath Davey leads the 13-u15 125cc category, with local riders Seth Thomas 2nd, Tyson Williams 3rd , Levi Ellis 7th and Kade Tipper 9th. Thomas leads the 85cc big wheel 14-u16, while Thomas is second and Ellis third in the 12-u14 division. Maitland is no stranger to hosting big events, with the club staging rounds of the national Pro MX series from 2019-24, the NSW Off Roads in 2023 and 2025, the Ironman MX in 2024 and 2025. Amazon reveals new warehouse robots in push to trim manual tasks

Amazon unveiled several new robots it's planning to deploy throughout its logistics network in announcements on May 7. The functions and benefits vary by robot, but they largely focus on eliminating or reducing manual employee tasks. Amazon's automated "Tipper" robot, for example, automatically unloads packages from carts brought by employees to conveyor belts. 'We want to create more high-skilled work that is ergonomically sound for everyone at our facilities,' said Nicola Fyfe, VP of Amazon Logistics in Europe, in a news release. 'Technology is helping us achieve this vision by creating better, safer work environments inside our delivery stations.' Robot Function Benefit Deployment Tipper Transfers packages from carts to conveyor belts Eliminates need for manual unloading Starting in Europe, will eventually deploy globally Echelon Manages package flow on conveyor belts Eliminates need for manual handling Starting in Europe, will eventually deploy globally Six-sided scanner Automatically captures package information from every angle Eliminates need for manual scanning Starting in Europe, will eventually deploy globally Agility and Matrix Determines optimal package sorting paths Minimizes need for manual pushing, reaching and handling Starting in Europe, will eventually deploy globally ZancaSort Brings packages and bags to employees at an ergonomic height Removes need for employees to walk through numerous aisles or reach to stack parcels Starting in Europe, will eventually deploy globally Vision Assisted Sort Station Visually highlights packages and their correct sorting locations Makes it easier for employees to match packages to correct delivery route totes Planned deployment in U.S. and Europe delivery stations starting in 2027 Vulcan Picks and stows items with advanced sensing technology Handles items stowed in hard-to-reach places that are less ergonomic for employees Planned deployment in the U.S. and Europe over the next few years Source: Amazon Amazon's newest robots aren't taking over its fulfillment centers and last-mile delivery stations just yet, as large-scale deployment will take years. Still, the company said the technologies at its Dortmund, Germany, facility offer a glimpse into what the company expects its network will look like in the future, with machines taking on much of the heavy lifting. Working conditions for employees within Amazon's warehouses have faced scrutiny through the years. A Senate report in 2024 suggested the company's warehouses created a "uniquely dangerous" environment for its workers, a claim Amazon refuted. "Since we've been pretty substantially integrating robotics into our fulfillment network over the last many years, we have seen cost-savings and we've seen productivity improvements and we've seen safety improvements," CEO Andy Jassy said on a February earnings call. "And so, we have already gotten a significant amount of value out of our robotics innovations." The e-commerce giant currently has more than 750,000 robots deployed in its network, all of which play a role in completing over 75% of customer orders, Amazon said in its announcement covering the "Vulcan" robot. Vulcan has a keen sense of touch, allowing it to carefully and easily manipulate objects within inventory pod compartments, according to Amazon. The robot's capabilities allow it to pick and stow items in the top rows of these pods, removing the need for employees to use step ladders to reach those areas. "Vulcan does this using an 'end of arm tooling' that resembles a ruler stuck onto a hair straightener, plus force feedback sensors that tell it how hard it's pushing or how firmly it's holding something, so it can stay below the point at which it risks doing damage," Amazon said. Amazon: BofA says robots/AVs could address 34% of total costs

-- Bank of America sees significant cost-saving potential in Amazon's growing use of robotics and autonomous vehicles (AVs), telling investors in a note Monday that the technologies could address up to 34% of the company's total costs. BofA said Amazon's robotics push is 'instrumental to improving Amazon's cost structure.' They explained that fulfillment and shipping each account for about 17% of Amazon's total costs, and both are areas where automation is increasingly being deployed. 'We believe delivery could be another area of material cost savings,' analysts wrote, highlighting the ramp-up of Zoox AVs and new MK30 drones. At its recent Delivering the Future event, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) unveiled eight new robots—including Tipper, ZancaSort, and Vulcan—designed to increase efficiency across delivery stations and fulfillment centers. Amazon said robots already assist with roughly 75% of customer orders, but BofA expects that 'robot touchpoints per package' will grow as the company integrates more machines. The bank believes these systems could reduce labor costs, cut injury-related expenses, and improve order accuracy, helping to minimize returns, which MWPVL estimates make up about 20% of fulfillment and delivery costs. Furthermore, BofA notes that robotics are already being scaled up at Amazon's 12th Generation Fulfillment Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. CEO Andy Jassy noted that the facility 'can reduce fulfillment processing time by up to 25%' and is expected to 'drive a 25% improvement in our cost to serve during peak.' With fulfillment costs totaling $99 billion in 2024, the bank says even modest efficiency gains could have a major financial impact. 'Robots/AVs could address 34% of total costs,' BofA concluded, reaffirming its Buy rating and $230 price target on Amazon.
