SUNY Broome students ready to walk the graduation stage
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Hundreds of SUNY Broome students are preparing to move their tassel from one side of their mortar board to the other during graduation this evening.
The community college held a Toast to the Tassel event this morning in the cafeteria. Roughly 800 students have earned degrees or certifications this year. Today, students were encouraged to don their cap and gowns and pose for pictures with family.
There was also a sparkling juice toast. SUNY Broome President Tony Hawkins says tonight's ceremony will be extra special for him as he finishes his second year at the helm. Hawkins says these graduates started at Broome the same year he did.
'I know many of them. We started together, we explored things together. I couldn't be more excited as I walk around the room and see people who were new when I was new and see the growth and confidence that they've achieved over the last 2 years,' Hawkins said.
The graduation ceremony takes place at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena tonight beginning at 6:30.
