Hoda Kotb reveals daughter's health condition was a factor in decision to leave 'Today'

Hoda Kotb is opening up about her daughter's health struggles, which she has revealed contributed to her decision to exit the "Today" show. Kotb on May 28 returned to her old stomping grounds to be a guest on "Today" and to co-host the program's fourth hour with Jenna Bush Hager. During a conversation with Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, she discussed the fact that her 6-year-old daughter Hope has Type 1 diabetes. "You just get a priority check in your life," she said. "I can be here and sweating what's happening to Hope in the morning and in the night, or I can be there and feel relief that I can see (her)." Guthrie said this was a "burden" for Kotb to carry while she was working on "Today," as "so many nights, Hoda would be up all night with Hope and then come in here with that smile on her face, and she hadn't slept a wink." Speaking to Kotb confirmed her daughter's health "definitely weighed in" to her decision to leave the "Today" show, though she said spending more time with her kids was the primary reason. Kotb told People magazine that Hope receives "constant care" and at one time was getting four or five shots a day. Hoda Kotb returns to host 'Today' with Jenna Bush Hager: What to know "I really wanted to and needed to be here to watch over her," Kotb told People. "So, whenever she needs anything, and it can happen at night, multiple times, I'm up — I'm up up up. But I would never, ever want Hope to one day grow up and say, 'Oh, my mom left her job because (of me).' It wasn't that alone. But if you look at it cumulatively, it was a part of that decision." According to the Mayo Clinic, Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas makes little or no insulin, and treatment is "directed toward managing the amount of sugar in the blood using insulin, diet and lifestyle to prevent complications." While co-hosting "Today with Jenna and Friends," Kotb shared that she started to feel that she was "too out of reach" to help Hope if her daughter needed her. Hoda Kotb's favorite question is 'tell me more.' Now she shares what's next. "That was one of many, many reasons I decided it was time for me to do something different," Kotb said. "There's something about knowing that you can mother your kid from right there. I don't worry now because I see her. I'm not thinking about it here." Kotb announced her exit from the "Today" show in September and officially signed off in January. Hager has since been hosting the show's fourth hour with a series of guest hosts, and on May 28, Kotb told Hager that she has been "literally crushing it." "I've been watching you every single day," Kotb said. "You've been incredible, so I hope you're proud of yourself." While speaking with Guthrie and Melvin, Kotb said she had a "weird rush of emotions" returning to the "Today" show, noting, "It's such a weird sensation to know that something can be incredibly painful to leave behind, and also be the right thing." Kotb also denied claims that will take over for Kelly Clarkson on the singer's talk show, insisting, "If I ever came back to TV, do you know where the only place I would ever come back to is? Right here." This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: 'Today' show: Hoda Kotb reveals daughter's Type 1 diabetes diagnosis

Erin Andrews reveals her surrogate has suffered a miscarriage

During the latest episode of her podcast, 'Calm Down with Erin and Charissa,' Erin Andrews shared some personal and emotional news with their listeners. Two years after welcoming their first child into the world via a surrogate, Andrews and her husband, former NHL star Jarret Stoll, were expecting their second child via a surrogate again. However, as Andrews revealed in the May 22 episode of the podcast, she and Stoll learned the morning of recording the episode that their surrogate had miscarried. 'I have dealt with this before,' Andrews shared through her tears. 'Things were going really, really well. Her little heartbeat and her numbers were really good. So much so, I even told you guys a couple weeks ago because we thought we had such good news.' Andrews said she considered not recording the podcast in order to grieve with her family, but added that work is 'such a great safe space' for her during times like this. 'I'm also really, really good at suppressing my feelings, and work really helped me with that,' Andrews explained. 'So I think one of the things I'm so sad about is I'm gonna have to do a better job with dealing with my feelings with this, because the last time we had such a loss, I didn't and I suffered with it.' The sports reporter added that while recording the podcast, she was 'thinking about Taylor Swift song, 'I Can Do It with a Broken Heart.' I'm really good at doing this with a broken heart.' But for Andrews, who is a cervical cancer survivor, it's important for her to be open about how difficult infertility has been. 'You know, our journeys with two surrogates, because we did lose. We had lost with our first surrogate, and then luckily, with our second one, we had Mack,' her and Stoll's almost 2-year-old son who was born June 28, 2023. 'It's really, really hard. I just said that to one of my girlfriends down there, down in my office, when I told her, she's like, 'God, it's so freaking hard to have a baby.' So I decided I would be honest about this,' Andrews continued. While a guest on 'Today with Jenna and Friends,' Andrews opened up about her decade long struggle with infertility, calling it '10 years of hell.' 'People, you have no idea what they're dealing with, and people deal more with loss than they do with the reward,' Andrews continued on the podcast. 'I know my husband's having a difficult time, and I'm gonna go home and be with him. Then we're gonna throw our little two year old in a pool, and I feel like squeezes are gonna feel a little different from him today.'

Pop star Kelly Clarkson is too busy to tour

Kelly Clarkson's TV talk show has stopped her from touring in recent years. The 43-year-old pop star has hosted 'The Kelly Clarkson Show' since 2019, and the chart-topping singer recently acknowledged that the talk show has hindered her music career. Speaking to her fans during a rare performance in Atlantic City, Kelly explained: "We haven't done a show in a while, y'all, 'cause I have a talk show. It's like a whole other job." The Grammy-winning star actually relished performing at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena. But Kelly admitted that she's simply too busy with her talk show and her family life to embark on a tour. The 'Since U Been Gone' hitmaker - who has Remington, nine, and River, ten, with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock - said: "We are bummed 'cause we love doing shows, and it's hard to fit it in, so it's cool when it does work out with the schedule. And it's cool to get to see your faces and feed off y'all. Thank you so much for having so much energy." Meanwhile, Kelly recently admitted that she's firmly focused on raising her kids, rather than looking for love. The pop star - who was married to Brandon between 2013 and 2022 - insisted that her children are her number one priority in life, meaning that she simply doesn't have time to date at the moment. Kelly said on 'Today with Jenna and Friends': "I'm running from my show to baseball practice and I'm trying to be just there. "It's a lot. My mom will tell me, 'Look, I was a single mom. I didn't get to make everything. They're gonna be fine. You turned out fine.'" Despite this, Kelly was able to look forward to performing two shows in Atlantic City over the weekend. The singer - who rose to fame as the inaugural winner of 'American Idol' in 2002 - said: "I am just trying to be there as much for them [as possible] and we're a cute little unit. I am trying to adult more. "So for Mother's Day weekend I do have a couple shows, but my kids aren't coming. So I do get to be an adult with my band having drinks and having adult time."
