This actor once challenged stardom of Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan with this blockbuster, which earned Rs 9 crore, movie was…, he is…

There was a time in the 1980s when the biggest names in Bollywood ruled the box office—icons whose films were almost guaranteed to be blockbusters. Among them was one actor, often underestimated, who suddenly rose to prominence with a film that surprised everyone. With its dramatic flair and emotional punch, this movie didn't just win over audiences—it also overshadowed films by the reigning superstars of that era. Who was this actor? That actor was Jeetendra, and the film was Tohfa (1984). Featuring a mix of drama, sacrifice, and family emotions, this film became a runaway hit and turned into a cultural phenomenon. Directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, the film starred Jeetendra alongside Sridevi and Jaya Prada, forming a powerful trio that brought intensity and depth to the story. Jeetendra, known for his unique dance style and expressive acting, delivered a performance that clicked with both the masses and critics. What was the storyline? The storyline of Tohfa revolved around two sisters, played by Sridevi and Jaya Prada, who fall in love with the same man—Jeetendra's character. The emotional conflict that follows, as one sister sacrifices her love for the happiness of the other, forms the heart of the story. It was this mix of love, pain, and sacrifice that resonated deeply with the audience. The film's dialogues and tear-jerking moments, paired with melodious songs like 'Tohfa Tera' and 'Ek Ankh Marun To,' added to its appeal. How did Jeetendra challenge other stalwarts of cinema? Released during a period when Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, and Amitabh Bachchan were delivering major films, Tohfa surprisingly outperformed many of their releases at the box office. It was a rare moment when Jeetendra, often seen in a different league, managed to eclipse the impact of Bollywood's biggest names. The film collected around Rs 9 crore, an impressive feat for its modest Rs 2 crore budget. The supporting cast of Tohfa, played a crucial role in enhancing the emotional and dramatic appeal of the film. Alongside lead stars, the film featured talented actors like Shakti Kapoor, who brought a mix of menace and humor in his role as Lalitha's brother. Late Kader Khan added his signature comic flair, making key scenes more engaging, while Asrani contributed light-hearted moments with his impeccable timing.
