Parker Meadows returns to Detroit Tigers from injured list after missing first 60 games
CHICAGO — Detroit Tigers center fielder Parker Meadows is ready to play his first game of the 2025 season after missing the first 60 games. The 25-year-old has been injured since Feb. 22 in spring training, diagnosed with a musculocutaneous nerve injury in his upper right arm. It was a 100-day absence. Advertisement The Tigers activated Meadows from the injured list Monday, June 2, for the opener of a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation granted anonymity because the roster move is not official. He traveled to Chicago on Sunday, June 1, in preparation for Monday's game. To reinstate Meadows, the Tigers optioned outfielder/designated hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy to Triple-A Toledo. SWITCH-HITTER: Wenceel Pérez provides Tigers something they don't have without him Meadows completed eight games on a rehab assignment, logging 37 innings in center field and 33 plate appearances. He hit .259 with one home run, six walks and eight strikeouts, including a 1.004 OPS in six games at Triple-A Toledo. Advertisement Returning to the Tigers, Meadows — a left-handed hitter — immediately takes over as the everyday center fielder and leadoff hitter against right-handed pitchers. In 2024, Meadows hit .244 with nine home runs, 25 walks and 76 strikeouts over 82 games. He was worth plus-5 defensive runs saved across 660 innings in center field. The Tigers had a 49-26 record when Meadows started last season, including a 33-11 record when he recorded a hit. Detroit Tigers outfielder Parker Meadows bats during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025. He hit .299 with an .857 OPS in his final 50 games after returning from Triple-A Toledo with a swing change. The best team in baseball just got better. New York Giants Draft Pick Named Defensive X-Factor
New York Giants Draft Pick Named Defensive X-Factor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Giants made seven selections in the 2025 NFL Draft, including a pair of first-round selections. Three of the seven Giants draftees were on the defensive side of the ball, headlined by No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter. Advertisement Carter is obviously expected to make an immediate impact, but he might not be the only Giants rookie to make an impact on day one from that side of the ball. Last Word on Sports' Joe Freer examined which Giants' rookie could be the team's X-factor on defense, and he decided that third-round defensive tackle Darius Alexander is the man. "The team's true x-factor on defense this year is third-round pick Darius Alexander." Freer wrote. "Alexander has the potential to help stop the run, which has been the defense's Achilles heel for years. If he can do this, mixed with his ability as a pass-rusher, Alexander could help make the Giants' defense elite." Alexander was a five-year player at Toledo. Across 58 games and three uniform numbers, Alexander largely anchored a Toledo defense that appeared in four-straight Bowl games. Advertisement His final two seasons at Toledo established him as a legit NFL prospect. In 2023, Alexander had 36 tackles, six for loss, four sacks, and broke up four passes. In 2024, he logged a career-high 40 tackles and eight tackles for loss, while picking up 3.5 sacks and his only career interception, which he took 58 yards for a touchdown. He also broke up an additional four passes that year. Freer believes that Alexander's ability in the run game will truly establish the Giants' defense as one the NFL's elite units. "Where Alexander can make the Giant's defense elite is in the run game." Freer wrote. "In 2024, the New York Giants' run defense ranked near the bottom of the league. They allowed an average of 143.7 rushing yards per game, good for 31st out of 32 teams. Additionally, opposing running backs averaged 5.24 yards per carry, the second-worst mark in the NFL." With Alexander and all of the other defensive additions the Giants made, Freer thinks the Giants' run defense will be stifling, with contributions all over the field. Advertisement "Now, the Giants' run defense issues extend beyond the interior defensive line. Their edge rushers, cornerbacks, and linebackers were often out of place, especially on extended or stretch runs." Freer noted. "However, a suitable second defensive lineman like Alexander can plug up the middle. Theoretically, teams will have to consider at least removing double teams from Lawrence in the interior or risk leaving Alexander one, as well. In either situation, there's a chance the Giants have a capable interior defensive lineman left one-on-one in most running situations." ‘Rachel Ruysch: Nature Into Art' Review: An Overlooked Painter's Overflowing Flora
Toledo, Ohio Renowned in her time, with her paintings in high demand, Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) has nonetheless been largely ignored by museums. She has never had a major monographic exhibition, not even in her hometown of Amsterdam. Undeniably, it could be a challenge: Ruysch almost exclusively painted still lifes—the main genre open to female artists at the time—and almost always floral arrangements. Roomfuls of Ruysches, no matter how exquisite, might feel like a florist's shop.

Detroit Tigers promote Dylan Smith for MLB debut — two days after 25th birthday
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two days ago, Dylan Smith celebrated his 25th birthday. And now Smith is celebrating his first taste of the big leagues. The Detroit Tigers called him up from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, May 30, before their series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Smith's first appearance will be his MLB debut Advertisement The right-hander, whom the Tigers selected No. 74 overall out of Alabama as their third-round pick in the 2021 draft, worked as a starting pitcher for the first three years of his professional career, with injuries shortening his 2023 and 2024 campaigns. SADDLE UP: Aces then and now: Justin Verlander wants Tigers to 'ride that horse' Tarik Skubal Detroit Tigers pitcher Dylan Smith (86) throws a pitch against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth inning during spring training at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida, on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025. He transitioned to the bullpen in 2025. Smith posted a 1.61 ERA with eight walks and 32 strikeouts across 22⅓ innings in 14 relief appearances for Double-A Erie (12 games) and Triple-A Toledo (two games). He primarily throws fastballs and sliders, but he also features a changeup and a curveball. Advertisement His Triple-A debut occurred May 23. That day, Smith struck out all three batters — from the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates — in the final inning of the game: Jack Suwinski (swinging, 94.3 mph fastball), Matt Gorski (swinging, 83.7 mph slider) and Liover Peguero (swinging, 84.9 mph slider). His fastball maxed out at 96.9 mph with the Mud Hens. And his slider had a 75% whiff rate. The 37-year-old will start Friday for High-A West Michigan, beginning a rehab assignment. Advertisement NO. 2: Tigers catcher Jake Rogers puts team first after shifting to backup role Cobb completed bullpen sessions in preparation for his rehab assignment — and he received many injections to treat inflammation in his right hip. His individual pitches were outstanding in bullpens, but he struggled to move his body, especially on plays where he had to cover first base. He has pitched just 16⅓ innings over the past two seasons, all with the Cleveland Guardians last season. From 2022-23, he registered a 3.80 ERA with 282 strikeouts across 301 innings in 56 starts with the San Francisco Giants. When healthy, Cobb has proven to be an effective pitcher. Ryan Cusick claimed off waivers The Tigers claimed right-handed reliever Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Athletics. The 25-year-old was the No. 24 overall pick in the 2021 draft. Advertisement Cusick has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo. He posted a 6.75 ERA with 13 walks and 11 strikeouts across 14⅔ innings in 13 relief appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas, an affiliate of the Athletics. He throws a four-seam fastball, slider and sinker, with his four-seamer averaging 95.4 mph and his slider generating a 33.3% whiff rate. Cusick began his professional career with the Atlanta Braves, spending one season in their organization. In March 2022, he was shipped to the Athletics (with Cristian Pache, Shea Langeliers and Joey Estes) in the Matt Olson trade. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
