Yilmaz remains in detention alongside Ogulcan Mersin, Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek, all of whom await charges in connection with the case. According to the RCMP, police found 44 migrants packed into the back of a U-Haul truck the night of Aug. 2 close to the Canada-U.S. border near Stanstead. The migrants were asylum seekers, largely of Haitian origin. The Canada Border Services Agency said last week that it had deported an unspecified number of the migrants back to the U.S., where they were likely transferred into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. Most asylum claimants seeking refuge in Canada are unable to do so if they cross the border from the United States. An agreement between the two countries allows Canada to send asylum claimants back across the border without granting them a hearing, unless they're unaccompanied minors or have family in Canada. As a result, many attempt to cross into Canada without being detected by police, sometimes endangering their lives and relying on smugglers in the process. The RCMP also said Tuesday that it had arrested two people — 25-year-old Can Volkan and 27-year-old Kurey Recep — for involvement in another alleged human smuggling scheme near Valleyfield involving 11 migrants. The Gazette has reached out to the RCMP for more details. Toronto Blue Jays Opinion Toronto & GTA Toronto Blue Jays Canada

Fourth man charged after 44 people found in truck by U.S. border

The RCMP say a fourth person has been charged in an alleged human smuggling operation after 44 people were found in 'horrific' conditions inside a cube truck earlier this month in Quebec near the United States border. Tolga Yilmaz, 34, was arrested at Montreal Trudeau International Airport on Aug. 8, allegedly on his way out of the country. The RCMP announced the arrest Tuesday in a media release. 'He appeared in court on Aug. 9 and remains detained pending further proceedings,' the RCMP said. 'The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be laid.' The Mounties and Canada Border Services Agency say Yilmaz was allegedly involved in the illegal entry into Canada of 44 people on Aug. 3 near Stanstead, Que. Three other men were arrested on charges including aiding or abetting someone to commit an offence under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Ogulcan Mersin, 25, and Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek, both 31, were charged on Aug. 4. They are due back in court on Aug. 28 for their next court appearance. Yilmaz faces the same charges and remains detained like the other three accused. The 44 migrants were mostly Haitian, and included a pregnant woman and children as young as four. Despite the poor conditions they were found in, they were not seriously hurt. The RCMP and CBSA have been working together to crack down on illegal crossings. Police said two other individuals were charged in the Valleyfield region, southwest of Montreal, for attempting to smuggle 11 foreign nationals on Sunday. A 25 and 27-old-man appeared by video in the case. 'Investigations are underway to establish links between these individuals and other recent human smuggling events,' police said. RCMP arrest 4th man after dozens of migrants found in truck in Quebec

A fourth man has been arrested in connection with what police allege was the illegal entry of 44 people into Canada earlier this month near Stanstead, Que. The RCMP say 34-year-old Tolga Yilmaz was taken into custody Aug. 8 at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport by officers with a joint RCMP–Canada Border Services Agency team based in Valleyfield, Que., as he was preparing to leave the country. Police allege Yilmaz was involved in the Aug. 3 incident in which 44 people were intercepted after entering Canada illegally in a cube truck. He faces two smuggling-related charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Customs Act, the same charges laid against three men arrested at the scene — Ogulcan Mersin, Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek — who appeared in a Sherbrooke, Que., courtroom soon after their arrest. Yilmaz appeared in court on Saturday and remains in custody pending further proceedings. Police say the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be laid. The RCMP says it is also looking into whether other recent incidents are connected. On Sunday, officers in the Valleyfield region arrested two men — 25-year-old Can Volkan and 27-year-old Kurey Recep — who are accused of trying to smuggle 11 foreign nationals. The CBSA says both men have also been charged under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Customs Act, and appeared by videoconference at the Valleyfield courthouse. Police say they are investigating whether the six accused men are linked. The RCMP and CBSA say human smuggling is a lucrative global criminal activity that endangers lives, fuels organized crime and undermines national security.
