Residents call for safety measures after several vehicle crashes into homes

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Another crash where a vehicle slammed into a home — the fourth we've covered just in the last three weeks. The latest crash happened Wednesday around 9:15 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Sable Boulevard. Horace Tolliver, the homeowner, says he, along with other neighbors, has complained to their city leaders because it's not the first time they've had trouble like this. Several vehicles, a home vandalized in Denver Washington Park Tolliver has lived in the neighborhood for 17 years. In that time, he says three of his cars have been totaled and four mailboxes have been replaced. He says drivers often treat the area like a racetrack and something needs to be done to stop it. This is the sight that people living in the area saw. 'I hear this loud explosion,' said Tolliver. 'The first thing that came to mind is there was a call for rain, so at first I thought it was a giant thunderstorm,' It wasn't. Instead, it was a truck slamming into his home. 'He had such an impact on it, he actually knocked my other vehicle into the garage, into my family room,' said Tolliver. 'So, there's a big gaping hole in there.' When he went outside to find out what happened, he saw another truck sitting on top of his. Police say the 23-year-old driver of the at-fault vehicle, which was a 2006 Dodge Ram, was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. They say alcohol is suspected in the crash. That driver, Ever Alberto Vargas-Araujo was issued a summons for DUI, careless driving and failing to present evidence of insurance. FOX31 Newsletters: Sign up to get breaking news sent to your inbox 'I see the truck, so I run around to the driver's side, and I'm yelling. There's no movement in the vehicle. As I walk away, his door starts opening and he starts climbing out,' said Tolliver. 'I'm yelling at him and he starts to stumble out the vehicle.' Tolliver says, unfortunately, it's not the first time he has encountered crashes on his property. 'I am shocked, but I'm not surprised because that's the third vehicle I lost here that was completely totaled,' he said. He says he and other residents have reached out to city leaders multiple times over the last few years to increase safety measures in the area. 'Asking for roundabouts, speed bumps or stop signs and everything I get in return is we're conducting a study,' said Tolliver. Police say that since 2002, there have been five crashes in the area. 18-year-old was subject to slashed tire, stalking from Denver deputy: Affidavit The city of Aurora provided FOX31 with a statement reading in part: 'Our preliminary review indicates one other similar southbound run-off-road crash at this location, which was also related to impaired driving. In response to previous concerns, we have already installed flashing warning signage on both approaches to the curve, along with additional static signage, to alert drivers.' City of Aurora Residents like Tolliver want to see more action taken. 'This is the worst damage I ever sustained on this property,' he said. 'It's got to stop.' A city spokesperson said they are committed to evaluating future improvements that could help prevent future incidents. They say they plan to work with the property owner to implement safety measures. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Official final results confirm election results in 7th Ward race in Aurora

Official final voting results from the April 1 consolidated election released recently confirmed that challenger Javier Banuelos defeated incumbent Brandon Tolliver in the tight race for the Aurora City Council's 7th Ward alderman seat. On election night, unofficial results from DuPage and Kane counties initially showed Tolliver leading at 50.48% of the vote compared to Banuelos at 49.12%. But now, official results from the two counties show Banuelos has won the seat at 50.66% of the vote to Tolliver's 48.84%. 'This is a moment of pure joy and gratitude — one I will carry in my heart forever,' Banuelos said in a Facebook post last week about his win. 'Thank you, Ward 7, for your trust and support.' The final results were close — Banuelos received only 25 votes more than Tolliver. Results were also split by county, with Banuelos winning DuPage County by 92 votes but losing Kane County by 67 votes. In total, Banuelos received 696 votes to Tolliver's 671 votes, official results accessed on Tuesday show. State law requires a canvass of votes, which makes results official, be completed no later than 21 days after the election, which for the April 1 consolidated election was Tuesday. Banuelos is set to officially take office at the city's Mayoral and Aldermanic Inauguration Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on May 13, which will be held at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora. 'No matter who you voted for, please know this: I'm here to serve our entire community,' he said in the Facebook post. 'In the coming weeks, I'll be meeting with residents, local leaders, and organizations to put our shared priorities into action.' Tolliver has been Aurora's 7th Ward alderman since he was appointed to the position after former longtime alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns died in June 2023. Saul Fultz also campaigned for the 7th Ward alderman seat in the April 1 election, but he ran as a declared write-in and received less than 10 votes. While official election results were available from DuPage, Kane and Will counties, Kendall County election results were still being shown online as unofficial at the time of reporting on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., so vote totals for other Aurora city government races were still unofficial. But, the 7th Ward is fully within DuPage and Kane counties, so that race's results were official on Tuesday. rsmith@

[DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] A jury convicted Holley Tolliver Jr., 58, of 16 counts of felonious assault on an officer, 4 counts of discharging a firearm, and one count each of burglary and theft of firearms, according to the Logan County Prosecutor's Office. The verdict was read by Logan County Court of Common Pleas Judge Kevin Braig on Thursday. As previously reported by News Center 7, a man barricaded himself in a home in the 11,000 block of Big Bear Path on August 14. Two people were hurt, including the suspect. Deputies shot Tolliver in the arm, according to Logan County Sheriff Randall Dodds. The trial started on Monday, April 14, when jurors were transported to the scene of the shooting. They visually observed the damage to the neighbor's residences from the gunfire, as 34 witnesses testified, including a forensic psychologist, who evaluated Tolliver for competency and insanity to assess his mental state, the prosecutor's office said. He was found mentally competent to stand trial. 'We are pleased with the verdict. Mr. Tolliver's actions put the lives of his neighbors, community, and many law enforcement officers in danger,' said Prosecutor Eric Stewart. Tolliver faces decades in prison, the prosecutor's office stated. His sentencing is scheduled for May 19. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
