21 Fresh Takes on the French Manicure for Summer

French tip nail designs have come a long way since their inception in the 70s. Created in 1976 by Jeff Pink, founder of nail brand ORLY, the French manicure started out as a simple yet chic combo of a bright pink shade on the nail base with a white cap at the tip. In modern times, the design has taken on many lives of its own: bolder designs (think ombré tips, jeweled accents, and shiny chrome finishes, and using every color your heart desires), make the French mani one of the most fun nail looks you could wear. 'It's incredibly versatile, universally flattering, and never goes out of style,' celebrity nail artist Kim Truong tells Vogue. 'Its neutral colors complement every skin tone and outfit, and suit all nail shapes. Plus, the design is easy to refresh, so it always feels current.' 'It's pretty much fail-proof,' adds celebrity nail artist Tom Bachik. 'If you don't know what to do with your nails, you really can't go wrong.' Below, Truong and Bachik share their favorite ways to dress up the classic mani. From pastel texture tips to micro fruit-inspired designs, here are 21 ways to elevate your French tip nail designs. What Are Soft Gel Nails? Here's What to Know About the Acrylic Tip Alternative

In recent years, soft gel nails have grown in popularity—so much so that even Tom Bachik, Jennifer Lopez's go-to nail expert, relies on them to create the star's natural-looking nails. If you're a fan of classic acrylic tips, you may be wondering how soft gel extensions compare. While there are definitely similarities, the two couldn't be more different when it comes to the material and the way they are applied. Read on to learn all about the ins and outs of soft gel nail extensions. Who knows? You might just want to follow Bachik's lead and make the switch yourself. What are soft gel nail extensions? Soft gel nails are similar to old school press-on nails—the shape of the nail comes pre-made and is meant to cover your own nail completely. Unlike acrylic nails, soft gels are free of plastic, resins, and polymers. And, unlike press-on nails, they don't require glue. What's the difference between acrylic tips and soft gel extensions? There are several differences. One of the main ones? Acrylic nails are made of plastic. They are created with a mixture of monomer liquid and polymeric powder. Many people use acrylics because their own nails don't grow well or break off easily. Applying acrylics can take at least half an hour, and removing them can be a lengthy process: They need to be filed and wrapped with cotton soaked in acetone and then covered in aluminum. Soft gel nails, on the other hand, are lighter and more flexible as they are made from a flexible gel, similar to the gel used in gel polish. They are applied after the manicurist does a dry manicure, since a traditional 'wet' manicure can prevent the gel extensions from adhering. When applied correctly, soft gel extensions are long lasting and less damaging to natural nails. They are applied with a type of gel polish that acts as a glue. Since soft gel nail extensions come pre-shaped, the manicurist has more time to experiment with designs and finishes. Soft gel nails can be glazed with colored gel polish or regular polish and are ideal for adding all kinds of decorations. To remove them, the tip is cut to the base and then the nail is soaked in acetone for 10 to 15 minutes. You can do it at home, but most professionals recommend removing soft gels with the help of a manicurist at the salon. How to apply soft gel nails According to the brand Aprés, a favorite of Bachik, soft gel nails can last up to four weeks without chipping or lifting—if they are applied properly. Though the brand is available in salons, it also offers kits with products and tools that allow you to apply soft gel extensions at home. Here's how the brand recommends applying their version:

Hot summer weather calls for cool summer manicures—and this year, aquamarine nails are popping up all over the place. The aquamarine nail trend There's also something delightfully retro about the look, as these minty blue shades call to mind the Y2K aesthetic of the early 2000s. After showing off bold colors like cobalt blue nails, peach-champagne nails, and cherry-coded nails, Gomez has been on a minimalist streak, wearing lavender milk nails, soap nails, and now a clear glass manicure. On May 1 the Rare Beauty founder hosted the brand's annual Mental Health Summit in Los Angeles. For the occasion, Gomez and her longtime manicurist Tom Bachik decided to bring the clean-girl look to the next level, opting for perfectly manicured nails topped with clear nail polish—that's it. To elongate the nails, Gomez paired the noncolor with her signature long almond nails. The result? An understated mani that resembles clear polished glass. To complete the look, Gomez wore a crisp white blazer, light-wash high-waist jeans, a white shirt, and chunky rings (alongside her stunning marquise diamond engagement ring from fiancé Benny Blanco, of course.) As for her glam, Gomez wore a full face of (what else?) Rare Beauty with spring-ready pinks on her cheeks and lids, and a glossy rose lip gloss. She seems to be growing out the Old Hollywood bob she wore throughout awards season, her brunette hair reaching lob territory past her shoulders. Will we be seeing the return of long-haired Selena Gomez? Only time will tell. Bachik created the look using his own line of gel nail polish pens, Click Colors by Tom Bachik. 'Crisp and clean,' he wrote on Instagram. He started by prepping the nails and cuticles with the Tweezerman Nail Care Set before shaping Aprés Nails Medium Coffin Gel X Tips into Gomez's long almond shape. Last, he finished the look with the Click Color pen in Super Clear, which is described as a 'pristine, transparent gel that shines like glass. Nuff said.' Ready to try this minimalist look yourself?
