Rock Icon, 80, Says He 'Never Got the Chance to Reconcile' With Brother Before His Death

Rock Icon, 80, Says He 'Never Got the Chance to Reconcile' With Brother Before His Death originally appeared on Parade. falling out with his brother and fellow Creedence Clearwater Revival member Tom Fogerty is well known, but in a new interview with Classic Rock magazine, he shared that the two never fully reconciled before Tom's death in 1990. 'I never got the chance to reconcile or even figure out what Tom was thinking – if indeed his thoughts were cohesive or understandable at that time,' John said in the August issue. 'I'm pretty sure he was upset and confused – and I don't mean that in any demeaning way; I was upset and confused during those times, too – certainly not like an adult would process all that stuff.' The folk-rock legend also reflected on his long-running feud with Fantasy Records head Saul Zaentz. CCR signed with Fantasy in the '60s, but John and Saul quickly began to butt heads. While John produced, wrote, and sang nearly everything the group released, Fantasy's publishing deal gave the company ownership of all CCR songs, including John's. That deal created a massive point of contention, as John felt exploited by both the label and Zaentz. Related: Despite John's issues with Saul, Tom became close with the record exec over the years. 'At the same time, when Tom left, he also said, 'Saul Zaentz is my best friend,'' John added. 'That's such a goofy statement considering what Saul Zaentz was doing to me at the time. I would have loved to try to figure out what the heck Tom was thinking. I didn't get to speak to him directly. I was speaking through this guy, Bruce: 'Go tell Tom, look, let's all just take a vacation. Let's just knock off for a year or two. Don't make any grand declarations about it, let's just stop doing this until we can make some sense.' But Tom didn't wanna do that. He was adamant about having some definitive action, a decisive event, and so he did that.' Tom died from AIDS-related tuberculosis in 1990. John mentioned their unresolved problems in a heartbreaking eulogy at his funeral saying, 'We wanted to grow up and be musicians… I guess we achieved half of that. We didn't necessarily grow up.' 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Rock Icon, 80, Says He 'Never Got the Chance to Reconcile' With Brother Before His Death first appeared on Parade on Jul 18, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 18, 2025, where it first appeared.

Creedence Clearwater Revival's Music Soars Following John Fogerty's Announcement

Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits rises across Billboard's rock ... More rankings after John Fogerty reveals re-recorded album plans. Later this summer, the celebrated songwriter and artist will release a new album titled Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years, which will feature reimagined versions of many of that band's most successful smashes. The group doesn't need a reason to rise on the Billboard charts, but this exciting development may have been enough to push its music higher. Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits, Creedence Clearwater Revival's hugely successful compilation, appears on three of Billboard's albums-focused rankings this week. It climbs on all of them simultaneously and returns to the top 10 on all but one. The set rises from No. 11 to No. 7 on the Top Rock Albums list, and at the same time, it experiences a similar surge on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums tally, leaping from No. 12 to No. 8. The project has previously peaked at No. 3 and has spent 436 weeks on both rosters throughout its lifetime. Chronicle only fails to crack the top 10 on the Billboard 200. While it remains one of the longest-running successes in the history of that competitive ranking — it's fast approaching 750 weeks — it has only risen as high as No. 18. According to Luminate, during the latest tracking frame, Creedence Clearwater Revival's hits-packed collection shifted 15,700 equivalent units. That's up 8% from the previous period, and that large of an uptick means something exciting connected to the music or the artist – like a new announcement – has taken place. Of that total, 2,200 units are actual sales. It's not unusual for Chronicle to appear on the Billboard charts or even to climb but the group doesn't always score a hit song. This week, Creedence Clearwater Revival's aptly-named revival is in full swing, and the outfit manages one of both. In addition to the album's gains, the rockers also score a hit on the streaming side of the business, as 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain' returns to the Rock Streaming Songs tally at No. 25.
