Azeem shows courage but misses the mark in Kentucky
Malaysian 100m champion Muhd Azeem Fahmi in action during the training session at Zhejing sports complex for 19th Asian Games in China yesterday..28/09//2023/ Star. PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi (pic) showed courage despite a slight hamstring pain to compete in the men's 100m event at the Southeastern Conference Championship but it was not good enough to book a place in the final. Azeem posted 10.35s after running into headwind at the University of Kentucky Track in Lexington, Kentucky yesterday to finish third in the second heat, behind teammate Kanyisola Ajayi (10.15s) and Florida University's Jaden Wiley (10.26s). If the conditions had been favourable to Azeem, he would have recorded below 10.30s, but it still would not have been enough to qualify for the final as only the nine fastest from the heats qualify. He will now gear up to compete in today's 4x100m relay final as he is among the four fastest Auburn University athletes in the 100m. 'I took a week off and ran into a headwind,' he said. 'But it is good to be on track again (after skipping training for a week). I hope to help the team win another medal in the relay.' Auburn are targeting their third gold of the season in the 4x100m relay in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In the Louisiana State University Championships, Azeem teamed up with Israel Okon, Dario Matau, and Makanakaishe Charamba to clock a blistering 38.49s - the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this year. They also topped the podium at the Tom Jones Invitational on April 19 with an even faster time of 38.39s. Azeem, who holds the national 100m record of 10.09s set at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia, is chasing a sub-10s time to secure a spot in the World Championships in September.

Talented LSU wide receiver runs blazing time in 100-meter dash, showcases elite speed
Talented LSU wide receiver runs blazing time in 100-meter dash, showcases elite speed LSU football wide receiver Jelani Watkins is making a name for himself on the track circuit. Running at the Tom Jones Invitational in Florida, Watkins posted a time of 10.03 in the 100-meter. The time ranks No. 6 in LSU history and was a career best mark for Watkins. Watkins also set a career-high 200-meter in Florida with a time of 20.61 seconds. Watkins signed with LSU football as a four-star recruit in 2024. Per the On3 Industry Rankings, he was the No. 216 overall recruit and No. 36 ranked wide receiver in the class. Watkins was a coveted prospect, large in part due to his speed. As a true freshman, Watkins only played eight snaps on offense. He dealt with an ankle injury as LSU began fall camp last year. LSU's wide receiver room is one of the fastest in the SEC. With four of the Tigers' leading receivers from 2024 moving on, there's a chance for young players like Watkins to carve out a role. For now, Watkins will continue making waves on the track.

(AP) — Florida State has canceled all home athletic events, including its final spring football practices and a baseball series against Virginia, through the weekend after an on-campus shooting Thursday left two dead and at least six others injured. The two people who died were not students at the university, but the shooter is believed to be a student, Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower. He was the son of a sheriff's deputy whose former service weapon was used in the shooting. Classes were canceled through Friday, and all athletic events were canceled through Sunday. Along with football and baseball, that includes a softball series scheduled against Georgia Tech. The Seminoles' women's golf team is playing in the ACC Tournament in North Carolina, its women's track team is at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, and the men's tennis team played Thursday night in Louisville as schedule. ___ AP Sports:
