Talented LSU wide receiver runs blazing time in 100-meter dash, showcases elite speed
LSU football wide receiver Jelani Watkins is making a name for himself on the track circuit.
Running at the Tom Jones Invitational in Florida, Watkins posted a time of 10.03 in the 100-meter. The time ranks No. 6 in LSU history and was a career best mark for Watkins.
Watkins also set a career-high 200-meter in Florida with a time of 20.61 seconds.
Watkins signed with LSU football as a four-star recruit in 2024. Per the On3 Industry Rankings, he was the No. 216 overall recruit and No. 36 ranked wide receiver in the class. Watkins was a coveted prospect, large in part due to his speed.
As a true freshman, Watkins only played eight snaps on offense. He dealt with an ankle injury as LSU began fall camp last year.
LSU's wide receiver room is one of the fastest in the SEC. With four of the Tigers' leading receivers from 2024 moving on, there's a chance for young players like Watkins to carve out a role.
For now, Watkins will continue making waves on the track.

CHICAGO — Kerry Carpenter hit three home runs against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, June 2, in the opener of a four-game series at Rate Field — launching his first shot in the first inning, another in the fourth, and his final blast in the sixth. The Detroit Tigers won easily, 12-1. Advertisement They're the first MLB team to 40 wins, with a 40-21 record. The 27-year-old, a former 19th-round draft pick, became the first Tigers player to hit three homers in a game since Victor Martinez on June 16, 2016. It marked the best game of Carpenter's four-year MLB career, which now spans 292 games. He finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs in five plate appearances. His three home runs combined for 1,156 feet. These were the three homers: In the first, he hit a middle-middle 83.9 mph changeup from right-hander Jonathan Cannon for a 401-foot homer to right-center field. In the fourth, he hit a down-and-in 87.5 mph cutter from right-handed reliever Bryse Wilson for a 357-foot homer to right field. In the sixth, he hit a middle-middle 92.4 mph fastball from Wilson for a 398-foot homer to center field. An amazing catch The Tigers made a one-in-a-million catch in the fifth inning, courtesy of the catcher and the third baseman. It was Dingler to Zach McKinstry. A ball hit into foul territory tipped off Dingler's glove, then ricocheted off McKinstry's leg, and somehow ended up in McKinstry's glove — just before landing in the dirt. Jack Flaherty dominates Cubs, top of the order delivers in Tigers' 4-0 win
In an early-season interleague battle of first-place teams, the Detroit Tigers came out victorious. With a sellout crowd Sunday, June 8, at Comerica Park of 40,343 (the fifth sellout of the season and third in a row), the Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-0. "Two out of three in front of our home fans against that team is exactly the type of environment that we want to create for the rest of the summer," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "There's a lot of quality baseball being played by these two teams that was on display this weekend, and (we) took it to win the series." Flaherty then walked Kelly to load the bases, but got out of the inning without allowing a run on Michael Busch's hard lineout to center. "Just all throughout these guys have been incredible, and it's just a testament to the work they put in," Flaherty said. "It makes it a lot of fun to watch and easy to trust the defense." Flaherty's seventh strikeout, via a fastball on second baseman Nico Hoerner in the fifth inning, got both Hoerner and Cubs manager Craig Counsell ejected by home plate umpire Derek Thomas for arguing. West Virginia's season ends after loss to LSU in super regional
Jake Brown hit a home run and had four RBIs, Steven Milam had two doubles and also drove in four runs and LSU beat West Virginia 12-5 on Sunday night to sweep the best-of-three Baton Rouge Super Regional. No. 6 seed LSU (48-15) clinched the program's 20th berth in the College World Series, where the Tigers will try to win their eighth national championship — all since 1991, the most recent in 2023. Derek Curiel led off the game with a double and scored to make it 1-0 when Brown reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning and the Tigers led the rest of the way. Anthony Eyanson (11-2) gave up four runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings. Chris Stanfield, Curiel and Ethan Frey each drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Milam cleared the bases with a double off starter Jack Kartsonas (6-4) to spark a five-run second that made it 6-0. After Jace Rinehart hit a two-out solo shot and pinch-hitter Chase Swain drew a walk, Chase Shores came on a struck out Brodie Kresser swinging to end the eighth and the pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. Milam and Josh Pearson each hit a grand slam as LSU beat the Mountaineers 16-9 in Game 1 on Saturday. West Virginia (44-16) set the program's single-season record for wins under first-year coach Steve Sabins. The Mountaineers advanced to their first-ever super regional last season. The game had originally been scheduled for 5:06 p.m. local time but was delayed approximately three hours due to inclement weather in the area.
