Republic Services sees mounting frustration from towns, officials amid worker strike

Advertisement 'The City of Boston is already experiencing service disruptions as a result of this strike,' the Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Republic and Teamsters Local 25 have held two negotiating sessions since approximately 400 workers walked off the job, but have yet to end the standoff. On Friday, the two sides met for nine hours, aided by a federal mediator, but remained far apart. They are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday. Union officials said that Republic upped its wage offer, but workers would still earn less than those at other waste management companies. The union also said the company 'refused to budge' on providing health insurance that is more comprehensive than the plan Republic now offers. Advertisement 'We tried everything to get a settlement,' Local 25 President Tom Mari said. 'We even proposed a delay in implementing our health insurance proposal to replace the inferior company health insurance, which would have been a savings to the company. But it was to no avail.' A Republic spokesperson said union is spreading falsehoods. He said the company's proposal on Friday included a pay increase of about 43 percent over five years, with an immediate 16 percent wage increase. The company said 45 percent of its Greater Boston Teamsters drivers earned more than $100,000 last year. Republic said it offers a 'comprehensive health and welfare plan,' and pays 100 percent of the premiums. The Teamsters' proposal, the company said, 'offers no significant benefit at a substantially higher cost.' Stella Tannenbaum can be reached at

MASSACHUSETTS TEAMSTERS DEMAND LAWMAKERS REQUIRE HUMAN OPERATORS IN ALL MOTOR VEHICLES

Union Leads Charge Against Waymo and Other Big Tech Firms' Reckless Expansion BOSTON, June 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Teamsters and a union coalition gathered on Beacon Hill today to demand regulation and accountability for autonomous vehicle (AV) operators that are attempting to expand into Massachusetts. Both at a rally outside of the state house and at a hearing in the Massachusetts General Court Joint Committee on Transportation, Teamsters called on lawmakers to pass S.2393/H.3669, which would require human operators in all AVs. Union members also called for the legislative body to kill S.2379/H.3634, a Waymo-sponsored bill that would hurt workers. "The only reason Waymo and other AV companies invest in this technology is so they can get rich by destroying the livelihoods of millions of workers," said Tom Mari, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Joint Council 10 and President of Teamsters Local 25. "Our elected officials have a responsibility to support the middle class. They can do that by killing the Big Tech bill and requiring human operators in driverless cars and trucks." Waymo's push to expand comes despite the fact that the company is being federally investigated, has issued multiple safety recalls, and was involved in hundreds of accidents throughout the country. "Massachusetts is not a playground for Silicon Valley," said Steve South, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 25. "After today, I want to see Waymo turn around, drive right out of this state, and never come back." Similar Teamsters-backed legislation is pending in Oregon and Texas. The California Assembly has already passed a bill this session requiring human operators in commercial vehicles. Teamsters Joint Council 10 represents more than 50,000 union members throughout New England.
