Kohli closes in on long-awaited IPL title
NEW DELHI, June 2 (Reuters) - Virat Kohli's trophy cabinet is chock full of awards from his international career but the batsman can end the long wait to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title when his Royal Challengers Bengaluru play Punjab Kings in Tuesday's final. The 36-year-old has been with Bengaluru since the inaugural edition of the league in 2008, including nine seasons as captain of a franchise that made the finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016 but lost every time. They have looked a different side altogether under Rajat Patidar this season though, winning all seven away games in the group stage and crushing Punjab in the first qualifier. Veteran Kohli is their leading scorer in the tournament but while Bengaluru have been criticised in the past for ignoring team balance and packing the side with marquee players they have finally clicked as a team this season. "It's a better balanced side, far better balanced side," former Australia player Tom Moody, who has coached Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, told ESPNcricinfo website. "It's not top heavy. There's opportunities for other players to have an impact in the game, whereas previously, you look at RCB and it was always the top three and then you're concerned about what follows that." Bengaluru were reinforced by Josh Hazlewood's return from a shoulder injury ahead of the playoff and he had an immediate impact as they dismantled Punjab for 101 on Thursday. Down but not out, Punjab managed to claw their way into the final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium after beating Mumbai Indians in Sunday's qualifier. Shreyas Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title last year, has led from the front and is Punjab's top scorer this season. He produced a captain's knock of 78 not out to help Punjab chase down a tricky target set by powerhouse Mumbai in the qualifier. "I love big occasions," Iyer said after his match-winning knock. "I say to myself and my colleagues, the bigger the occasion, the calmer you are, and you'll get the best results. "Today I was focusing on my breathing rather than sweating it out." Iyer, with the full backing of coach Ricky Ponting, has instilled a fearlessness in Punjab's approach that has given them hope of winning a first IPL crown.

'Lack A Quality Indian Middle-Order Player': Tom Moody On Where It Went Wrong For GT
Last Updated: Tom Moody believes Gujarat Titans need a quality Indian middle-order batter to address a significant gap after their IPL 2025 Eliminator loss to Mumbai Indians. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody believes that the Gujarat Titans (GT) need a quality Indian middle-order batter to address a significant gap in their lineup. This issue became evident after their 20-run loss to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025 Eliminator. GT's impressive IPL 2025 campaign was driven by their top-three batsmen: captain Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler. As a result, their middle order had limited opportunities to bat during the league matches. During the chase of 229 in New Chandigarh, following the dismissals of Washington Sundar and Sudharsan, GT's middle-order batsmen—Sherfane Rutherford, Rahul Tewatia, and M Shahrukh Khan—struggled to maintain the required run rate against a formidable MI bowling attack. Consequently, the IPL 2022 champions were eliminated from the competition. Tom Moody remarked, 'I group Rutherford with Tewatia. They have similar roles, though they are different in their style—one being more of a six-hitter. However between them, they faced 26 balls today and managed to hit only one six. That, to me, explains everything." He added, 'They bat at the end of the innings where boundaries are crucial—either fours or sixes, not singles. This is what they train for. That was their moment to hit at least three more sixes, which might have made a difference." Moody further explained, 'Washington stepped up for that role in this match, but they lack a quality Indian top-order or middle-order player to fill that gap. Finding such a player would significantly improve the team's balance." Varun Aaron, the former India fast bowler who was part of the GT setup when they won the IPL 2022 title in their debut season, noted the absence of a middle-order batsman who could replicate David Miller's performance from that season. Aaron said, 'Tewatia usually comes in during the last two or three overs to play a crucial role. However, he has never been the player to consistently build an innings from earlier on. David Miller was that player—he would enter with six or seven overs to spare, build his innings, and finish strongly." He concluded, 'In 2022, Miller was reliable, ensuring he did not miss any slot balls, which was a key factor in GT's success. This year, Rutherford has not been able to replicate that performance consistently." (with PTI Inputs) First Published: May 31, 2025, 14:11 IST

IPL 2025: Jitesh's unbeaten 85 against LSG is the innings of the season, feels Moody
New Delhi: Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody has declared Jitesh Sharma's unbeaten 85, giving Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) a top-two finish with a six-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), as the best innings of the ongoing IPL 2025 season. At the BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, Jitesh's breathtaking knock, laced with six sixes and eight fours, ensured RCB chased down 228, the third-highest successful run chase in their IPL history. The win helped RCB set up a date with Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 on Thursday, it also made them the first-ever IPL team to win all seven away matches in an IPL season. "The innings is, for me, the innings of the IPL this season by a stretch. We've seen some great knocks from young and old, but this one, wow, quite remarkable! "The team was totally against it - backs against the wall, Kohli in the sheds, (Phil) Salt in the sheds. 'There was significant headwind, but he just ignored it all and just took the game apart. He not only took the game apart, he played smartly, just the way he went about it was like he'd been there and done it before many, many times,' said Moody on ESPNCricinfo. Former India batter Abhinav Mukund lauded Jitesh for learning from mistakes committed in RCB's defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, while pointing out the slices of luck he enjoyed during his knock - surviving a run-out, being reprieved off a no-ball, and escaping a run-out attempt at the non-strikers' end off Digvesh Rathi. "And that's a great sign of any IPL cricketer, right? They were 172 for 3 in the last game, chasing 232, they got 189 all out. I know the wickets fell before him, but the pressure increased in the last game right after the timeout. "I feared the same when he got out of that no-ball, but luck is a beautiful thing there. You get a reprieve and then you say, 'okay, this time I'm not making a mistake again.' That's exactly what happened. I'm very, very happy for Jitesh, but this is exactly what you're paying the big bucks for as a mid-order batter. 'And he's proven that a plenty. On a night when your top wicketkeeper or your World Cup wicketkeeper (LSG skipper Rishabh Pant) gets a hundred and everyone's happy, this guy's got one better, I would think, with 85 off 33," he concluded.

Dyson unveils world's slimmest vacuum cleaner in Seoul
Dyson unveiled its slimmest cordless vacuum cleaner -- the PencilVac, featuring a 38-millimeter diameter handle and weighing 1.8 kilograms -- at a launch event in Seoul on Monday. To achieve the PencilVac's ultra-slim form factor, the British appliance maker developed a new proprietary Hyperdymium motor, roughly the size of a Korean 500-won (37 cents) coin. 'The challenge was to get something small enough to fit this new 38 millimeters,' Nathan McLean, senior engineering manager at Dyson, said at a press briefing. 'It is over 34 percent more power-dense than its predecessor and spins 140,000 times per minute.' Despite its compact build, the PencilVac delivers strong suction performance, boasting 55 air watts -- sufficient to eliminate more than 99 percent of fine dust on hard floors, the company said. The new model also debuts Dyson's first FluffyCone head, equipped with four conically-shaped nylon brush bars. The brushes rotate in opposite directions, enhancing pickup efficiency across all directions. 'Hair is ultimately spinning in this conical shape, where it is ultimately removed and migrated towards the end, where it conveniently comes off of the brush bar. So there's no tangling and you can see that they are actually inside the cleaner head here,' said Tom Moody, president at Dyson Home. In addition, dual illumination green LEDs installed at the front and rear of the headlight illuminate up fine dust particles invisible to the naked eye, helping users detect and remove them thoroughly. The PencilVac is also Dyson's most maneuverable model yet. Its flexible design allows users to pivot smoothly around furniture and tight corners with minimal effort, enabling comprehensive cleaning in any direction. Dyson has also reimagined the dustbin architecture of the PencilVac. The vacuum compresses collected dust within a separate chamber, effectively maximizing bin capacity -- up to five times greater than previous models -- and reducing the frequency of emptying. The compressed dust is then ejected deeply into waste bins, minimizing airborne dust and ensuring a more hygienic disposal process, as users never come into direct contact with the debris.

LSG require collective performance to keep playoff hopes alive: Tom Moody
Lucknow Super Giants face a steep road to the IPL 2025 playoffs, and former Australia cricketer and veteran coach Tom Moody believes only a complete, all-round team performance can keep their hopes alive. As they gear up to face Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 19, LSG are in a must-win situation — needing strong displays from both their batting and bowling departments to stay in to ESPN Cricinfo, Moody noted that LSG's over-reliance on individual moments of brilliance has exposed their vulnerabilities. Their inability to operate as a cohesive unit could end up costing them a spot in the top 2025, LSG vs SRH: Preview "At the end of the day, LSG need to perform collectively. They started the season well, with Nicholas Pooran leading the way with the bat. But since his form has dipped, players like Rishabh Pant haven't had a strong season, and David Miller has also misfired in that finishing role," Moody said."That has put a huge amount of pressure on their bowling unit. What they need now is for their bowlers to perform at their very best. The batting must improve significantly. If they can bring both those elements together, then yes, they can compete strongly against Sunrisers," he pointed out that the Rishabh Pant-led side has struggled to find consistency, particularly with the bat. With key players like Pant enduring a lean run and question marks still lingering over the availability of openers Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh, the top order remains under pressure. At the same time, their bowling attack has lacked rhythm and depth, especially with Mayank Yadav ruled out again due to Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings have secured their places in the playoffs, leaving just one spot up for grabs. LSG are among three teams — including Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals — still in the hunt. To qualify, they must win all their remaining matches against SRH, GT, and RCB, while also relying on favourable outcomes in the MI and DC Sunrisers are out of the playoff race, they still pose a threat.
