Footy star who was fat-shamed on live TV gets revenge with a very cheeky midnight message
Sydney Swans star Tom Papley has exacted revenge on Toby Greene after the combative GWS Giants forward fat-shamed him in the recent derby. Greene, who had a poor first half on July 25, was interviewed at the break and was asked about Papley. He didn't hold back in his comments, questioning Papley's fitness, hinting he couldn't maintain his intensity as he returned from a hamstring injury. 'He's looking overweight,' Greene told Fox Footy. The hosts were then a team inspired after the break, and eventually won by 44 points, seemingly giving Greene the last laugh. But a cheeky Papley responded hours after the final siren, first sending a late DM on Instagram to Greene in which he was eating McDonald's - and in a separate clip, he could be seen getting a skin-fold test from a Swans staff member. Greene (pictured), who had a poor first half at Engie Stadium on July 25, was interviewed at the break and didn't mince his words when he was asked about Papley Speaking on the American Aces footy podcast on Monday with co-host Tommy Sheridan, Greene confirmed there was plenty of chat on the field with his long-term rival Papley. 'They (Swans) were up and about and he certainly had a bit to say,' he said. '(Personally) I didn't get near it, we were playing horrible. I was furious at halftime. 'I saw (commentator) Ben Dixon walking towards me and I was like, please don't interview me. 'During the interview, you couldn't hear him, but Papley was ripping into me....I was that angry. 'He (Dixon) worded me up... I wasn't actually going at his weight, I knew he (Papley) was underdone. 'When I said it, I was like, I shouldn't have said that. Emotions got the better of me. '(But) he was yapping away in my ear.' GWS coach Adam Kingsley launched a spray for the ages at halftime to help his side to victory Greene also enjoyed the banter with Papley post game, and acknowledged the Swans star 'was in good nick' physically. 'Well done to him there, that's good from him,' he added, referencing Papley's impressive skin fold reading of 37.5. The loss to the Giants virtually ended the Swans' finals hopes, while GWS are flying leading into September, chalking up six successive wins. Greene escaped punishment from the AFL for the Papley jibe, but did receive a one-match ban for striking Isaac Heeney.

GWS star Toby Greene in hot water for fat shaming rival player: 'it's always a good bit of fun'
GWS firebrand Toby Greene is once again facing scrutiny after a fiery Sydney Derby performance that included fat-shaming a rival player. The Giants captain made headlines for calling rival Tom Papley 'overweight' during a half-time interview. The comment came as Papley returned from a hamstring injury and played a lively opening half before GWS swamped the Swans with an 11-goal blitz on their way to a 5.12 (102) to 8.10 (58) victory. However, Greene also raised eyebrows with a high forearm that collected Isaac Heeney in the second quarter. That incident is expected to draw attention from the match review panel. Greene and Papley were central figures in several heated exchanges before the break. "He's looking overweight..." He questioned Papley's fitness, hinting he couldn't maintain his intensity all game. 'He's looking overweight,' Greene told Fox Footy with a smirk. The AFL is now reviewing both Greene's comments and on-field conduct. A textbook spray and a classic taunt were all that was needed to power GWS to a comeback win over Sydney. Hunting a top-four spot, Giants coach Adam Kingsley had let it rip at halftime after the Swans had slammed through six straight goals to set up a 28-point lead at Engie Stadium. His words had an immediate effect. The Giants returned serve with eight straight goals - nine in total - in the third quarter to set up a 44-point victory. 'It was a good one. It was direct,' skipper Toby Greene said of the spray. 'We deserved it, though. We were pretty ordinary in the first half. 'Their (Sydney's) work rate and contest were miles ahead of where we needed to be.' GWS move to fifth (13-6) with their sixth consecutive win ahead of the weekend's clashes, while Sydney languish in 10th (9-10). Greene had also lit the fuse at halftime with his 'overweight' comment about Papley. Papley had made a point of celebrating his first major on return from a hamstring by making a beeline to Greene in the second quarter. 'Nah, it's always a good bit of fun,' Greene said with a grin. Kingsley, who described his spray as delivering 'reminders', doesn't expect Greene to be sanctioned for the halftime comment. It comes after Brisbane veteran Dayne Zorko received a $3000 fine for his foul-mouth tirade towards the officials bench last week. Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was also fined $20,000 last year for goading Hawthorn players. 'I'd be pretty disappointed if he got fined,' Kingsley said. 'They're (the players) trying to put each other off, and they're doing it all within the rules, of course. 'Winners are grinners, and if you're not, you move on.' Greene's halftime antics come after a quiet week - uncharacteristically devoid of banter, at least from the Giants - between the cross-city rivals. 'We don't need to be winning any verbal battles. We need to be winning the physical battle out in the field,' Kingsley said.

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Sydney Swans are still alive in season 2025 after a thrilling 11-point win over Fremantle on Sunday. But their 14.10 (94) to 12.11 (83) win has come at a cost with Joel Amartey (groin) limping off in the dying stages and Tom Papley (hamstring) subbed out at half time. It's another painful close loss for the Dockers, who missed the finals last year after several narrow defeats. The Swans were out by 20 points in the third term before the Dockers found their fight through big man Luke Jackson (13 disposals, two goals) who kicked truly after the three quarter time siren. When Michael Frederick put his running shot out on the full in the dying stages, Sydney were able to hang on for the win. Fremantle's top eight hopes now hang in the balance, but for Sydney they stay alive in season 2025, although coach Dean Cox is sweating on his latest injuries. 'We need to work out the extent of that (Papley's injury) and the same with Amartey late in the game,' he said. 'We'll see throughout the next couple of days how that settles, get some scans and the results will come from that.' Their 11-point win at the SCG was set up on the back of a first half midfield 'bashing'. At half time, the Swans nailed five goals to none from centre clearance in worrying signs for Freo coach Justin Longmuir. 'They've been so dominant – plus-13 for clearance but in particular their centre bounce work, five goals from centre bounce,' Fox Footy's Alastair Lynch said. 'It is the mechanics of the four that are in there,' Dermott Brereton added. 'When (Brodie) Grundy is in there predominantly, they are having the first look, the first touch, the first clearance, first possession. It's predominantly going Sydney's way. 'That's the difference in the game as it stands.' Brodie Grundy was given the massive task of taking on Freo's tag team of Sean Darcy and Jackson. 'He's like a man possessed,' Fox Footy's Dwayne Russell said. 'He's a different man Brodie Grundy this last month and a bit. 'He did finish fourth in the best and fairest last year.' Statistics showed Grundy has leapt into the #11 ranked player in the AFL – up from the #95 he was ranked for the first six rounds. By full time, Grundy racked up 20 disposals, 33 hit-outs and a goal in a stellar performance. The Swans have shown vast improvement since the likes of Errol Gulden returned, but Cox will be hoping for some good news on the injury front ahead of next week's clash with the Saints at Marvel Stadium.
