Mets retire David Wright's No, 5, add him to team's Hall of Fame: 'I promise you I gave it everything I had'

The New York Mets retired David Wright's No. 5 jersey and inducted him into the team's Hall of Fame during a pregame ceremony on Saturday. To commemorate the honor, the Mets placed the third baseman's No. 5 on the Home Run Apple behind Citi Field's center field wall. Wright became the 10th Mets player to have his number retired by the organization, joining team legends like Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez and Mike Piazza. He joined Tom Seaver as the only player to have his number retired and be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame on the same day. During his 14-year career in Queens, Wright became the Mets' all-time leader in hits (1,777), singles (1,119), doubles (390) and RBI (970). His .296 batting average and 242 home runs rank third in franchise history. Named the fourth captain in team history in March 2013, Wright was a seven-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner. "I never accomplished my goal of bringing a World Series back to Queens," Wright said to the crowd during the ceremony, via CBS Sports. "But I promise you I gave it everything I had and wanted it just as badly as you did." "That night [of my final game]," he added, "I fully realized the extent of the relationship I had developed with the city of New York, and in particular this Mets fanbase." The Mets played in one World Series during his 14 seasons, losing in 2015 to the Kansas City Royals in five games. But by then, his career was near its end as Wright struggled with numerous back, neck and shoulder injuries. He batted .208/.240/.333 with one homer and four RBI in 24 at-bats. Wright's only other postseason run of note was in 2006, when the Mets advanced to the National League Championship Series and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. He batted .160/.176/.320 with a homer and two RBI. However, in a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, Wright hit .333/.385/.500 with four RBI. He retired in 2018 after returning for one final game, playing four innings. Prior to that, Wright's last action for the Mets was in 2016 when he appeared in 36 games. Despite the lack of postseason and championship success during his career, Wright was beloved by Mets fans and was one of New York's most popular athletes while the Yankees were winning division titles and a World Series.

SEE IT: Mets officially unveil David Wright's No. 5 in rafters at Citi Field

David Wright is officially a part of forever, as the Mets unveiled the beloved third baseman's No. 5 into the rafters on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. He became the eighth player in franchise history to have his number retired, and also joined legendary pitcher Tom Seaver as the only members to be enshrined into the team's Hall of Fame on the same day. A first-round pick in 2001 who blossomed into a seven-time All-Star at the hot corner, Wright wrapped up his 14-year career as the Mets' all-time leader in hits (1,777), doubles (390), RBI (970), and runs scored (949). He also ranks second in games played (1,585) and third in home runs (242). Wright became the Mets' fourth captain in 2013, joining team greats Keith Hernandez (1987-89), Gary Carter (1988-89), and John Franco (2001-04). While his career was cut short due to serious neck, back, and shoulder injuries, he hung up his cleats in 2018 with a laudable .296 average. Here are highlights from the pregame celebrations and festivities...

New Mega Millions increase odds, better prizes

(COLORADO) — Colorado Lottery players are about to get luckier, as the New Mega Millions begins in Centennial State on Tuesday, April 8, with the first drawing under the new prize structure at 9 p.m. The game now features better odds to win the jackpot, better odds overall, larger starting jackpots, and faster-growing jackpots. 'Beyond big jackpots, our players told us they want bigger prizes overall, and that's exactly what this new game delivers,' said Tom Seaver, senior director of the Colorado Lottery. 'Players who had won $2 in the old game will now take home $10, $15, $20, $25, or $50 under this game. Those who had won $500 under the old rules will now take home $1,000, $1,500, $2,000, $2,500, or $5,000 in this new game. Non-jackpot prizes at every level are going up by 2X to 10X. That's the kind of value the new Mega Millions will deliver to our players here in Colorado at every single drawing.' Game enhancements benefiting players also include: Improved overall odds: Overall odds will improve from 1:24 to 1:23 due to the removal of one gold Mega Ball from the game Improved odds to win the jackpot: Odds to win the jackpot will go to 1:290,472,336 from 1:302,575,350 due to the removal of one gold Mega Ball from the game. Larger starting jackpot: Following a jackpot win, the starting jackpot will reset to $50 million instead of the current $20 million. Faster-growing jackpots and bigger jackpots more frequently. The Mega Millions Consortium estimates that the average jackpot win in the new game will be more than $800 million. 2X-10X prize increase with built-in random multiplier Win more than the cost to play With higher-value prizes throughout every tier of the game, tickets for the new Mega Millions game will increase to $5 per play. According to the Colorado Lottery, this is the second price adjustment since the first ticket was sold more than 20 years ago and the first since the current game matrix was adopted in 2017. This Date in Baseball - Detroit Tigers Miguel Cabrera signs biggest contract in major league history

March 28 1976 — Media sources report a potential blockbuster trade between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers which involves two future Hall of Fame pitchers. According to the rumor, the deal will send Tom Seaver to the Dodgers in exchange for Don Sutton. Mets fans respond negatively to the proposed deal, perhaps influencing management to call off the trade. Seaver will remain with the Mets until 1977, when he is traded to the Cincinnati Reds, in a trade which will be universally rued by Mets fans. 1990 — A plan to allow starting pitchers to earn victories with only three innings pitched (because of the abbreviated spring training period caused by a lockout) is scrapped, but teams will be allowed to open the regular season with 27-man rosters instead of the normally allowed maximum of 25. 1999 — The Baltimore Orioles make the first visit to Cuba by major leaguers since 1959, and defeat the Cuban national team by a score of 3 - 2 in 11 innings. Pitcher Jose Contreras hurls eight innings of two-hit, ten-strikeout ball in relief for the Cubans, while catcher Charles Johnson hits a two-run home run and DH Harold Baines drives in the winning run for the Orioles. The two teams will play a rematch at Camden Yards in Baltimore on May 3rd. 2012 — Major League Baseball opens its season at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, with a 3 - 1 Seattle win over Oakland. The two teams are tied at 1 after exchanging runs in the 4th until the Mariners, who are considered the visiting team, score a pair in the top of the 11th off Andrew Carignan. Brendan Ryan opens the frame with a double and is driven home by Dustin Ackley's single; Ackley then proceeds to steal second and scores on a single by Ichiro Suzuki, the local favorite's fourth hit of the night. Both starters, Felix Hernandez and Brandon McCarthy, are excellent, but the win goes to reliever Tom Wilhelmsen. 2014 — Two-time defending American League MVP Miguel Cabrera signs an eight-year contract extension with the Tigers. Including the two years remaining on his present contract, the deal is worth $292 million, making it the biggest in major league history. It surpasses the ten-year extension signed by Alex Rodriguez in 2006 for $275 million. In fact Rodriguez had held the record since signing as a free agent with the Texas Rangers for $252 million in 2001. The huge deal makes the six-year contract for $144.6 million that Angels OF Mike Trout also signs today seem like an anecdote. 2019 — It's Opening Day across Major League Baseball as all 30 teams are active, one week after a preliminary two-game opening series in Japan. A record number of homers are hit today - 48 across the majors. Leading the charge are the Dodgers, who hit an opening day record eight long balls in their 12 - 5 win over the Diamondbacks. 2024 — It's Opening Day in Major League Baseball, with all 30 teams scheduled to play today - although two games on the East Coast are rained out. Highlights include great pitching performances by Corbin Burnes, Frankie Montas and Shane Bieber, a game-saving throw by Juan Soto, and a 450-homer by Vladimir Guerrero O'Neill, now with the Red Sox, homers on Opening Day for the fifth straight year, setting a new record, and C Jonah Heim of the Rangers plays both the goat and the hero, allowing the Cubs to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th when he argues in vain with umpire Chad Fairchild that a ball that got past him had been tipped by the batter, instead of retrieving it, and then driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a bases-loaded hit for the defending World Series champions. Finally, the D-Backs score an Opening Day and franchise record 14 runs in the 3rd inning of their 16 - 1 win over the Rockies, and do so without the benefit of a homer. _____
