Artist Tomei: Curating Transparent Life (+Aesthetic Jelly Recipe)
Interview with mysterious artist Tomei on the beauty of clear things. By Takeshi Dylan Sadachi This article was originally published as 'Artist Tomei and the Beauty of Clear Things' and 'Aesthetic Recipe: Edible Pond Jelly Inspired by Claude Monet' in Metropolis Magazine, 'Water' Summer 2025. Read the full issue here. Obsession with Clarity: Aesthetic Recipes and Beyond Tomei doesn't remember exactly when it began; only that from the moment she became aware of the world around her, she was already mesmerized by the ripples on water, the waves of the ocean and the surface of a pool shimmering in light. She's always been drawn to the transparent. Even as a child, she collected sea glass and marbles. Today, her job title is tomei aikoka —a transparency aficionado. Her favorite color, she says, is 'clear.' She often returns to a line by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: ' L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.' What's essential is invisible to the eye. Water has no shape or color, yet it's omnipresent and vital. She says it's this contradiction of knowing something is there but not being able to see it, that continues to draw her in. Tomei first gained attention through her ethereal recipe videos, which she started posting in 2019, often featuring aesthetic jellies. Her repertoire now includes everything from wagashi and kohakuto (Japanese crystal candies) to soda floats, on which she has published a book. Photography and videography are more than just ways to document her recipes: they are mediums for translating her love of clarity into visual art. She now curates and collects: objects, art, music playlists and fragments of everyday life seen through her lens. She also writes and takes on creative direction. Her newest venture includes launching a jewelry line. While transparency might sound like a specific and niche obsession, it's surprisingly omnipresent and expressible across diverse mediums. Her work is multidisciplinary, yet unmistakably cohesive. In Conversation With Tomei Do your aesthetics influence how you live day to day? Yes. Even when it comes to daily items or room decor, I tend to collect transparent things, often without realizing it. I've probably gathered over a hundred by now. But they're not carefully displayed like collector's items; they're just quietly woven into my everyday life. As for clothing, I find myself reaching for white more and more. White pairs beautifully with transparency, and it holds deep meaning in Japanese culture. It represents purity, and has long been essential in Shinto tradition. Brides wear a white kimono to mark a new beginning, and the deceased are wrapped in white as they depart this world without impurity. It's a color used from start to end, in both celebration and farewell. It is rich in meaning, yet ambiguous. Is there a place in Tokyo you'd recommend? Somewhere that captures the kind of atmosphere you love? One of the places I recommend is the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. There's a quiet space beneath the main exhibition area called the 'Water and Stone Promenade.' It's not a display per se, but the way light flickers across the surface of the water and the shadows of the stones shift softly is ethereal. On sunny days, waves of light ripple across the ceiling, and it lingers with you like an afterimage. I also really love the neighborhood it's in: Kiyosumi-Shirakawa. It used to be a thriving waterway hub during the Edo period, lined with warehouses. Many of those old warehouses have been transformed into cafés or galleries, and over time, the area has revived into a place where people gather again. Do you have any favorite seasons? Lately, I've come to love early summer, especially that moment just before the rainy season begins. The temperature starts leaning into summer, and you can smell the moisture in the air, but the sky still holds traces of spring. Japanese has so many beautiful words to describe this season's rain. Haku-u refers to a sudden evening downpour in summer, when it's still bright outside and the rain hits the ground with such force that it rebounds as mist, making the air appear white. Ryoku-u describes rain that falls gently over the fresh green leaves of early summer, making the greenery appear even more vibrant and glossy. The fact that each kind of rain has its own name shows just how closely people in the past attuned themselves to its sound, scent and texture. Tomei's Aesthetic Recipe: 'Claude Monet's Pond' Jelly Make a dreamy dessert in the impression of Monet's jardin d'eau, complete with water lilies and koi fish. Ingredients For Water Lilies ・Edible Flowers (soaked in sugar water) — as needed For Koi Jelly ・300ml lactic drink (like Calpis) ・3g agar powder ・30g granulated sugar ・Food coloring (red, black, yellow) — a little of each For Pond Jelly (Umeshu Layer) ・450ml water ・150ml umeshu (plum wine) ・60g granulated sugar ・Gelatin sheets — 12g (soaked in water for 1–2 minutes before use) Food coloring (blue, green, black) — a little of each Instructions 1) Make the koi jelly: Heat the lactic drink and agar powder in a saucepan until just before boiling. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. 2) Color and set: Strain the mixture and pour a little into four small containers. Add drops of food coloring to create koi-like patterns, and chill in the fridge until firm. 3) Cut out the koi: Use a small fish-shaped cutter to punch out the koi jelly shapes. Keep them in the fridge. 4) Make the pond jelly: In a saucepan, heat the water and umeshu. Gradually add food coloring until the liquid takes on a gentle, watery hue. Add sugar and stir to dissolve. 5) Add the softened gelatin sheets to the warm liquid and stir until completely melted. 6) Remove from heat and place the saucepan in an ice bath to cool slightly. 7) Assemble in layers: Pour a thin layer of pond jelly into a mold, and place the koi jelly and edible flowers on top. Chill to set, then repeat this step 2–3 times to create a floating effect. 8) Once fully set, briefly dip the mold in warm water to release the jelly. 9) Finishing touches: To finish, gently press plastic wrap over the surface of the jelly and chill for five minutes. This creates a soft ripple texture, just like a real pond.

Julie Jay: Give parents a break and let them take children on holiday in term time
Parents taking their children out of school to go on holiday is an issue again. Irish primary schools are reporting an astonishing 360,000 school days being used for this purpose. I can categorically say I won't be taking my children out of school for holidays anytime soon. This is less to do with missing term time and more to do with the fact I have sworn not to go abroad until the baby is older, having learned that hotels with toddlers are not exactly the relaxation the travel-agency brochures would have you believe. The truth is, I have no issue with parents taking children out of school for an annual holiday, although this hasn't always been my stance. When I first started teaching, I inwardly tut-tutted that doing so somehow diminished the importance of education. But now I know better, because I've come to realise that school isn't the be-all and end-all, and that missing a couple of weeks at primary level isn't going to cost them the points for medicine in the Leaving Cert. If the pandemic taught us anything, it is that school is not the only educator when bringing up children and helping them make sense of the world. Many young people missed huge chunks of term time, and, guess what — they are fine. They are taking the courses and pursuing careers that they would have pursued anyway. It turns out that children will learn with or without a classroom setting, and learning certainly doesn't stop and start at the school gates. I have no issue with parents taking children out of school for an annual holiday As regular readers of this column will know, I like to moonlight as a teacher during the week, just to while away the time and most certainly not motivated by my lacklustre comedy income. Just these last few weeks, I had started to fret about one of my students, whose 'H' status on the roll book I presumed indicated a prolonged hospital stay. I consulted their class teacher, who informed me, to my great relief, that this child was, in fact, on holiday. I delighted on hearing that this child was off availing of a break with her family, because as important as school is, it is hard to justify the near 100% increase in holiday costs (I am pulling this percentage out of the air, but I'm sure it's there or thereabouts) that come once summer holidays officially get under way. As the daughter of a teacher, going on holidays during term time was never an option. That said, I remember quite a few years when my mother would give me the day after the Oscars off, so I could stay up late and watch the awards live. I couldn't tell you what I learned in school on the day of the 1993 Academy Awards, but I can tell you about my glee in seeing Marisa Tomei win best supporting actress for My Cousin Vinny. This was a film I had watched with my auntie and adored, so much so that re-enacting Tomei's foot-stomping about her biological clock had become my nine-year-old's party piece at family get-togethers. My point is that holidays, days off, and time spent with family will always be more important than times tables and spelling tests. Nobody looks back on life and says, 'My biggest regret is that I didn't get to do indoor hockey in PE that day.' Children summering in Spain in May probably shouldn't also be skiing in Andorra in January Of course, there are limits to this, like anything else. Should I become minister for education in the morning (and given my inability to locate my school rollbook at any given time, the odds of this are very slim), I would allow parents the discretion to remove their children from school for two weeks to facilitate a holiday. That being said, I do think a bit of common sense has to be applied: Children summering in Spain in May, for example, probably shouldn't also be skiing in Andorra in January, if for no other reason than the number of broken arms and legs around south county Dublin in the latter weeks of the month is a clear indicator that Irish people shouldn't be going downhill on snowboards. And if they do, they shouldn't be expecting to emerge with their vitamin D-deficient bones intact. Equally, I once taught a child who was often absent due to attending Anfield to watch soccer, which was particularly worrying, given that Liverpool were performing very poorly at the time. You could nearly understand the child's regular absence if his team had been having a good run, but reliving the horror of a loss week after week was rubbing salt into a Man Utd-shaped wound. Most parents know their children and their families, and they know what is best for them. There is only a tiny window of opportunity when children are happy to join their parents on holiday, and it would be a shame to miss it. And if you can't have a holiday, perhaps just let your children snowboard down the stairs — it's probably safer than skiing.

Tomei's 1Q net profit jumps 33% on strong gold demand
KUALA LUMPUR: Tomei Consolidated Bhd remains focused on strengthening its brand, expanding outreach through promotions, and adapting swiftly to market conditions, while acknowledging that global trade tensions and tariff risks may dampen broader economic sentiments. 'We are cautiously optimistic that our proactive approach will help sustain profitability for the remainder of the financial year,' group managing director Datuk Ng Yih Pyng said in a statement. In the first quarter ended March 31, the integrated gold jewellery manufacturer and retailer posted a 33% jump in net profit to RM27.8mil compared with RM20.9mil a year ago. Revenue for the quarter rose 7.8% to RM348mil, up from RM322.8mil, supported by festive-driven retail demand and sustained consumer interest in gold, as prices hovered near the all-time high level Tomei said the retail segment remained the key contributor, posting RM286.7mil in revenue—up 3.3% year-on-year—while profit before tax (PBT) rose 33.9% to RM34.6mil, driven by higher gold prices and improved gross margins. The manufacturing and wholesale segment recorded a 12.4% increase in revenue to RM61.3mil, with PBT at RM3.5mil. 'We are pleased to begin FY25 on strong footing, supported by festive-driven retail momentum, higher gold prices and consumers' growing appreciation of gold as both adornment and investment,' Ng said.

Rachel Zegler to Star Alongside Marisa Tomei in Movie "She Gets It From Me"
Yara Sameh Rachel Zegler has lined her first film after 'Snow White' and is set to play the daughter of Marisa Tomei's wild-living mother in the comedy drama 'She Gets It From Me.' The film is directed by Julia von Heinz ('Treasure' and Germany's 2021 Oscar submission 'And Tomorrow the Entire World'), with Embankment launching global pre-sales in Cannes. Based on a true story, 'She Gets It From Me' follows Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother, Charlotte (Tomei). Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect. Embankment Films handles international sales with CAA representing U.S. rights. 'The emotional truth of the movie, reflecting parts of all our lives, is truly funny, immersive cinema,' said von Heinz. 'Jay's screenplay captures family dynamics at their most authentic: absurd yet profound, messy yet meaningful. The collision of two worlds creates comedy that cuts deep because it's so honest.' Added producer Jen Dana from 3311: 'Rachel always brings a brilliant depth and humanity to her roles, and we are so excited for her to continue to showcase her versatility and humor as an actress.' Zegler has been on a steep trajectory since breaking out in Steven Spielberg's 'West Side Story' adaptation (for which she won a Golden Globe), appearing in 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes' and, most recently, as the famed princess in the live-action 'Snow White.'
