Leaders Walsall decide against Gills postponement

League Two leaders Walsall have opted not to postpone Saturday's trip to Gillingham even though they have three first-team regulars on international duty. On-loan Stoke City goalkeeper Tommy Simkin has been called up by England Under-21s for two friendlies against France (Saturday, 21 March) and Portugal (Tuesday, 24 March). And two other almost ever-present first teamers, right wing-back Liam Gordon and defender David Okagbue have been called up too. Gordon has two Concacaf Gold Cup games for Guyana against Guatemala (Sunday, 22 March and the second leg on Wednesday, 26 March). Okagbue, along with Ronan Maher, currently on loan at non-league neighbours Tamworth, and Darius Lipsiuc are all with Republic of Ireland Under-21s for friendlies against Scotland (21 March) and Hungary (24 March). And on-loan Manchester United striker Ethan Wheatley is away with England Under-19s for European Championship qualifiers against Wales (19 March), Turkey (22 March) and Portugal (25 March). Walsall also now have left wing-back Connor Barrett suspended for two games, after running up 10 yellow cards. Mat Sadler's Saddlers remain top of League Two, in the wake of last Thursday night's 2-2 comeback draw at Bromley, three points clear of second-placed Braford City. But they are now only six points clear of the chasing play-off pack, having not won in five games. And they have managed only three victories in 13 League Two games since top scorer Nathan Lowe was forced to return to parent club Stoke in January. John Coleman's Gillingham, who came from behind to draw 1-1 at Bescot last month, are 19th - but are now 12 points clear of danger with 10 games left.

🎥 Goalkeeper's water bottle trick backfires in spectacular fashion 🫣

League Two table-toppers Walsall were shocked by Grimsby Town at the weekend, as the Mariners romped to a 3-1 victory at the Poundland Stadium. It looked to have been business as usual for the Saddlers as they took the lead after six minutes, but Grimsby battled back, and at 2-1 up, they had the opportunity to extend that lead just before half-time. Even at League Two level, goalkeepers have plenty of intel on potential penalty takers, which is of course written on water bottles up and down the country. Make sure you watch this clip up to the aftermath of the goal to see why that research was rendered useless for Walsall stopper Tommy Simkin... 🤣 When your water bottle can't help you! #GTFC — Grimsby Town F.C. On-loan Saddlers keeper Simkin signs new Stoke deal

Goalkeeper Tommy Simkin has agreed a new contract to stay with Stoke until the summer of 2028. The 20-year-old has been on loan at hometown club Walsall this season, featuring in all but one of the Saddlers' League Two fixtures. He had previous loan stints with AFC Fylde, Solihull Moors and Forest Green Rovers and has also won six England caps at Under-20 level. "I love being a Stoke City player and my family love me being a part of the club," said Simkin. "My aim is to be Stoke City's number one in the future. "I have played consistently this season at Walsall which has given me consistency in my game. Every game I play on loan gives me more experience and takes me closer to that goal. "In the immediate future, I am focused on playing well and helping Walsall to hopefully achieve promotion." Simkin has made one Championship appearance to date for the Potters, against Sheffield Wednesday in December 2023.
