A fire broke out at the main stage of the Tomorrowland electronic music festival in Boom, Belgium, on Wednesday, just two days ahead of its opening on July 18. As final preparations for the festival's opening were being made in the northern Belgian city, the main stage caught fire, resulting in significant damage. The main stage is the centerpiece of the festival and features a theme-based installation. As of now, the cause of the fire has not been determined. The US Sun reported that local residents reported hearing fireworks before the fire started, but a word from the authorities on the cause is still awaited. At the time of the fire, there were no visitors at the venue as the festival was to start in two days' time. Around 1,000 workers were reportedly at the venue when the blaze erupted on Wednesday afternoon. As of now, it is unclear if anyone was injured. The festival's organizers have not released an official statement on the fire, as of this writing. Debby Wilmsen, a spokesperson for Tomorrowland, told the local newspaper, Der Telegraaf, that they are prioritizing safety now. "Emergency services are on site. A major fire has engulfed the main stage at the Tomorrowland festival with firefighters battling the blaze. The fire ripped through the main stage at the festival site in Boom, Belgium. There are no festivalgoers at the site, although around 1,000 employees are understood to be there. VRT News reported it was unclear whether anyone had been injured in the fire. Residents nearby have been asked to close their windows and doors as the fire is not yet under control. The festival was due to start on Friday. Thousands of revellers - including some from Ireland - make their way to the festival each year over one weekend where they can listen to electronic sets. A festival spokesperson told local media: "Our priority now is the safety of our visitors and those in the surrounding area." The mayor of Boom, Jeroen Baert has reportedly cancelled his holiday in Germany and will be returning to handle the fall out from the fire. Firefighters shared concerns the blaze could spread to nearby woods. Images have shown the fire continues to rapidly spread through the area, although locals have been told the smoke is not toxic. Photos also showed emergency services had arrived at the site with firefighters bravely battling the inferno. The festival sold out in record time this year with 800,000 people expected to have attended over the two weekends, according to DJ Mag.
