Orioles place 1B Ryan Mountcastle on the injured list with a hamstring strain
BALTMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Saturday, a day after the first baseman left in the eighth inning of a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox with discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Mountcastle had an MRI. 'Just hopeful that it's not too bad,' Mansolino said. Mountcastle, who is hitting .246 with two homers and 15 RBIs, is the second Orioles player in as many days to go on the injured list with a hamstring strain after Cedric Mullins did so Friday. Mountcastle is one of five players from Baltimore's opening day lineup who are currently on the injured list, joining Mullins, outfielders Colton Cowser and Tyler O'Neill, and infielder Jordan Westburg. Both Cowser and Westburg are currently on rehabilitation assignments at Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles recalled infielder Coby Mayo from Norfolk to take Mountcastle's roster spot. Mansolino said Mayo, who was in Baltimore's lineup Saturday as the designated hitter, could see time at first base. Baltimore also selected the contract of outfielder Jordyn Adams from Norfolk and designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment. ___ AP MLB:

Report: Orioles set to add John Mabry to coaching staff
Former longtime major league player John Mabry is in discussions with the Baltimore Orioles to become a senior advisor on the staff of interim manager Tony Mansolino, The Athletic reported Thursday. Mabry, 54, played for 14 major league seasons for eight clubs, including eight seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals. He also has served as a coach for the Cardinals, Kansas City Royals and most recently the Miami Marlins. The Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde, as well as field coordinator and catching instructor Tim Cossins on May 17. Baltimore was 15-28 at the time of the dismissals after making consecutive playoff appearances. In 1,321 career games, Mabry was a career .263 hitter with 96 home runs and 446 RBIs. He made his major league debut in 1994 with the Cardinals and was fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1995 when he batted .307 in 129 games. --Field Level Media

Orioles in discussions with John Mabry to join coaching staff: Sources
The Orioles' firings of manager Brandon Hyde and field coordinator/catching instructor Tim Cossins effectively left the team down two coaches. They are in discussions with John Mabry to fill one of those positions, according to sources briefed on the team's plans. Mabry, a former major-league outfielder and first baseman and coach with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals and Miami Marlins, would become a senior advisor on new manager Tony Mansolino's staff. Mansolino's promotion from third base coach created the other coaching vacancy. Advertisement The Orioles replaced Mansolino at third base by expanding Buck Britton's duties as a major-league coach. Mabry, 54, essentially would take Cossins' spot. The Orioles do not intend to fulfill the second coaching opening. As a senior advisor, Mabry would bring experience to a staff that includes not just a first-time manager in Mansolino, but also a first-year hitting coach (Cody Asche), first-year bench coach (Robinson Chirinos) and second-year pitching coach (Drew French). In previous jobs, Mabry served mostly as a hitting coach. He spent seven seasons with the Cardinals, three with the Royals and two with the Marlins. A job in Baltimore would be something of a homecoming. Mabry was born in Wilmington, Del., and attended high school in Chesapeake City, Md. (Top photo of John Mabry in August 2024:)

Orioles C Adley Rutschman exits game after taking foul tip to mask
May 25 - Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman exited Sunday's road game against the Boston Red Sox after taking a foul tip off his mask in the third inning. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Rutschman was removed as a precaution and will be monitored over the next 24 hours. He didn't say whether Rutschman is in concussion protocol. While the Orioles star remained in the game for the fourth inning, Baltimore sent up Maverick Handley as a pinch-hitter for him in the top of the fifth inning. "Once (trainers) felt there was a need to take him out as a precaution, we did it immediately," Mansolino said. In the third, Rafael Devers swung at a first-pitch fastball that sent a foul tip into Rutschman's mask. The game was paused for a few moments as the catcher collected himself and remained in the game. It's another blow for Baltimore, which already has 10 players on the injured list, including catcher Gary Sanchez, who served as Rutschman's backup. On Sunday, Handley replaced Rutschman -- who has played in 352 of a possible 376 regular-season games over the past two-plus seasons. Rutschman was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2019. This season, he is batting just .211 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 50 games. In his four seasons in the majors, the two-time All-Star has batted .256 with 57 home runs and 216 RBIs in 465 games. --Field Level Media

Orioles snap 8-game skid as Rutschman homers in 11th inning of 8-4 victory over Brewers
Adley Rutschman hit a three-run homer to highlight Baltimore's four-run outburst in the 11th inning as the Orioles snapped an eight-game skid by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 on Wednesday. Baltimore ended its longest losing streak since August 2021, when it dropped 19 straight games. Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino earned his first win in his fifth game since taking over for Brandon Hyde, who was fired Saturday. Milwaukee had tied the game on Caleb Durbin's two-out RBI single in the ninth against Félix Bautista, who was pitching on back-to-back days for the first time this year after missing the 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. After Baltimore's Ryan O'Hearn and Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio hit RBI singles in the 10th, the Orioles broke through against Tyler Alexander (2-4) in the 11th. Automatic runner Heston Kjerstad advanced to third on Ramón Urías' infield single and scored on Jackson Holliday's single to center. Rutschman followed with a drive over the left-field wall. Seranthony Domínguez retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th for his first save. Bryan Baker (3-0) allowed one run in the 10th and picked up the win. O'Hearn went 4 for 6 and drove in two runs. Baltimore's Gunnar Henderson scored three runs. Rhys Hoskins homered for Milwaukee. Key moment Although the Brewers eventually lost, they produced one of the more exciting plays of the season with some daring baserunning in the fifth inning. Durbin led off with a double After Joey Ortiz popped out on a bunt, Durbin took off for third in a stolen base attempt just as Brice Turang hit a dribbler about halfway up the first-base line. As the Orioles threw out Turang at first, Durbin kept on running and slid home safely. Key stat Rutschman's homer made him 4 for 8 against Alexander in his career. Up next The Orioles start a four-game series at Boston. Thursday's scheduled pitchers are Cade Povich (1-3, 5.23 ERA) for Baltimore and Lucas Giolito (1-1, 7.08) for Boston. The Brewers open a four-game series at Pittsburgh. Mike Burrows (0-0, 0.00) pitches for the Pirates on Thursday. The Brewers haven't announced a starter.
