The Hard Ciders (and Beers) to Sip Through the End of Summer

It's Tony Rehagen, your Top Shelf beer snob, here to announce that, for one month only, I'm donning a tin-pot hat and playing Johnny Appleseed to plant the notion of cider as a summer mainstay. But first here's a bushel of news from the world of brew: If I say the word 'cider,' your mind most likely turns to fall. That makes sense: Autumn is apple-picking season, traditionally a time when you huddle up by the campfire with a warm, sweet cup of fermented apple juice on a chilly night. But American craft pommeliers, like craft brewers, have been broadening the spectrum of cider and making it a year-round player— especially as a slaker during these remaining days of summer swelter.

Your Beer Could Be Much, Much More Refreshing

Your beer buddy Tony Rehagen here, always standing by to help you crack open a cold one to beat the heat. This summer, maybe it's time to mix it up. But before I take you to cool-down school with a sweet shandy or a salty chelada in hand, here's the hottest news from the world of brew: It will likely come as no surprise to you, but I feel like the surest escape from summer's sweat and swelter is a cold beer (but not too cold). Why It's Time to Turn Down the Volume on Craft Beer

Hello! It's Tony Rehagen, your measured moderator of all things brew-related, here for your monthly serving of Top Shelf beer culture. In this edition, we'll be talking about resisting the bladder-busting trend going on in high-alcohol beer. But first your regular ration of industry news: I was in the gas station recently, picking up a six-pack of Dos Equis for a day on the deck, when I paused in front of the cooler and marveled at the selection of 'road sodas.'

IPA Guide: Craft Beer's Dominant Style Has Many Faces

Cheers! It's Tony Rehagen, your lanyard-wearing drinks correspondent still unpacking and sorting hotel-restaurant receipts from this year's Craft Brewers Conference in Indianapolis. The annual gathering of North American brewers, vendors, suppliers and assorted beer professionals is a great place to hear the latest scuttlebutt in the industry. Among the headlines being talked about: In addition to the educational seminars, product expo and evening networking events, the Craft Brewers Conference features the annual World Beer Cup, one of the biggest beer and cider competitions. More than 250 judges from 37 different countries taste and appraise brews in 112 categories and subcategories, from Hoppy Lager to Belgian Fruit Beer to Smoke Beer.
