Vine continues Aussie cycling victory spree in Europe

Jay Vine has continued the recent wave of Australian cycling success on the European roads, powering away over the final kilometre to steal the third stage of the prestigious Swiss race, the Tour de Romandie. The 29-year-old Townsville rider's brilliant effort came on Thursday, 24 hours after Michael Matthews had won the Eschborn-Frankfurt one-day race and a week after Michael Storer took the overall victory at the Tour of the Alps. Vine's win was also an emotional one for the UAE Team Emirates star as it was his first individual WorldTour victory in Europe since his terrible crash at last year's Tour of the Basque Country when he feared for a while he may never walk again. It's been a long road back to recovery from my neck injury last year," said Vine, who after breaking two vertebrae was back racing four months later and even won the King of the Mountains classification at the Vuelta a Espana. "It's three wins this year so far, and my first WorldTour win in in a long time (since the 2023 Tour Down Under), so I'm really happy. And I know my son and wife are watching at home," said Vine, who had become a father last year while recuperating from his horror accident. It was a brilliant piece of opportunism that propelled Vine to victory just after the "flamme rouge" one-kilometre-to-go marker on the 183.1km trek around Cossonay in the west of Switzerland. "The first two hours had been really, really hard, felt like it was being motor paced. But after that climb, the gap was being reduced to (the leader) Stefan (Kung), and I thought, 'okay, I gotta be up here in this group to minimise time gaps, so I might as well see what I can do and have a crack'." Even as he made his striking attack, he reckoned he wasn't quite sure he'd be able to hold on. "I'm not very bright, so I was like, 'Oh, is it 1k to the top of the climb? Or 1k to the finish?', he reflected with a smile. "But that was probably my bullet, my moment to go - and I took it. "Once I rounded the corner, I knew that it started to flatten off and go downhill again, so I was pretty safe by then." "Yeah, it's all to play for tomorrow, and then the time trial on Sunday. I'm really looking forward to that, ahead of the Giro d'Italia. The GC is still wide open," he said.

Vine finishes third in Tour de Romandie ahead of Giro d'Italia campaign

Jay Vine has taken another major step on his remarkable comeback to professional cycling by making the podium in third place at the Tour de Romandie. Vine, whose career was in the balance last year after a horror crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, put in a terrific final-day time trial in the Swiss race to grab his first overall podium place at a UCI World Tour event since winning the 2023 Tour Down Under. The 29-year-old Queenslander appears to be approaching peak form ahead of this week's first Grand Tour of the year, the Giro d'Italia, as part of a strong Australian line-up. Vine's UAE Team Emirates Portuguese teammate João Almeida took the overall win after finishing second in the 17.1-kilometre time trial around Geneva, which was won by double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel. He needed to claw back half a minute on the leading trio of Frenchman Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious), Italian Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) and Almeida, who were separated by just 3 seconds on the general classification standings. Almeida produced a brilliant ride to finish second in the time trial. Martinez had to fight to keep hold of second place overall with the 13th-fastest time of the day. He managed to keep the charging Vine at bay by just 15 seconds but the Australian comfortably leapfrogged the struggling Fortunato into third. Vine was the first Australian to make the Romandie podium since Richie Porte finished runner-up in 2021. He also took home the orange jersey as points classification winner, ahead of his teammate Almeida. AAP

Almeida powers Team Emirates-XRG to Swiss title before Giro d'Italia

4 May 2025 22:04 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)UAE Team Emirates-XRG closed out a stellar week of racing by capturing the overall title at the Tour de Romandie, with Portuguese climber Joao Almeida claiming the general classification victory following a confident final stage in the individual time trial in Geneva. The team's performance was further underlined by Jay Vine's third-place overall finish to compliment his victory on Stage 3, the mountains classification win, and UAE Team Emirates-XRG securing the team said, 'Of course, I feel very happy. The goal was to win the race. Unfortunately, I didn't win a stage, but we were always in the front, and that's what matters. I'm super happy for the overall win. I need to thank the whole team; they did a really good job, and we can be proud of it.''What counts is the last day, right? So I think it was the right day. To be honest, I was struggling the whole week; I was never feeling 100%, but I gave my best, and I never gave up. Sometimes it's all about your mindset.'The sixth and final stage of the Tour – a 17.1-kilometre individual time trial in Geneva – was won by Belgian time trial specialist Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–QuickStep), who delivered a near-flawless ride to claim the stage win. However, all eyes were on the general classification, where Almeida produced a measured and powerful effort to finish second on the stage, just 12 inches Australian colleague Vine contributed mightily to the team's success this week. He claimed victory on Stage 3 to Cossonay after launching a decisive solo attack in the final kilometre. His aggressive riding throughout the mountainous stages earned him the King of the Mountains jersey and propelled him to third place overall by the race's conclusion. This Tour de Romandie campaign adds to the Emirati squad's outstanding season this year, bringing their total number of wins to 37. The team continues to build momentum ahead of the Giro d'Italia, which will get underway in Albania next weekend.

Joao Almeida secures Tour de Romandie victory for UAE Team Emirates

Joao Almeida capped another successful week for UAE Team Emirates-XRG by clinching the overall title at the Tour de Romandie, with the Portuguese climber claiming general classification victory following a confident final stage in the individual time trial in Geneva. Almeida secured overall victory on Sunday by finishing second to Remco Evenepoel in the closing time trial. 'The goal was to win the race,' Almeida said. 'What counts is the last day, right?' 'Of course, I feel very happy. Unfortunately, I didn't win a stage, but we were always in the front, and that's what matters. I'm super happy for the overall win. I need to thank the whole team; they did a really good job, and we can be proud of it.' The day before, Almeida had lost a mountaintop duel to Frenchman Lenny Martinez, a specialist climber, in an Alpine stage. Entering Sunday's time trial, Martinez led Italian Lorenzo Fortunato by two seconds and Almeida by three seconds. Evenepoel, the Olympic and world time trial-champion, powered away to win the flat 17.1km stage in 20 mins 33 secs. Almeida was next fastest, 12 second behind. The diminutive Martinez was 13th, 41 sec behind the winner to secure second overall. Fortunato was another 40 places and 55 sec behind. Evenepoel, who returned last month after four months out injured and recorded some promising results in the one-day classics, was testing himself in a stage race as he prepared for the Tour de France. He finished eighth overall. 'I knew I was coming to this race with some up and down form, so I didn't have big ambitions. I was mainly focusing on today's stage,' said the Belgian. 'I still have more than two months before the Tour de France, so I have to be patient and work day by day.' The Tour de Romandie win adds to the UAE team's brilliant 2025 season, bringing their total number of wins to 37. The team's next target is the Giro d'Italia which gets under way in Albania next weekend.
