An Awareness Campaign That Wants You To Ignore It

Press Release – TANZ Tourettes Association of New Zealand and Saatchi & Saatchi NZ create the first anti-awareness awareness campaign for Tourettes Awareness Month 2025. When it comes to Tourettes, attention often makes things worse. Most awareness campaigns ask for your attention. This one is screaming for you to ignore it. To mark Tourette's Awareness Month (15th May – 15th June), the Tourette's Association of New Zealand (TANZ) has launched 'Please Ignore It' – a new campaign that twists the convention of traditional awareness efforts. When it comes to Tourette's, attention often makes things worse. And it was this simple insight that led the creative team to such an unexpected theme. 'When someone has a tic, the last thing they want is more attention,' says Emma Henderson, TANZ General Manager. 'Most people think of Tourette's as the neurological disorder that makes people swear or shout profanities, which is a form of tic that only impacts 10% of people with Tourette's. So, when they meet or see someone with other types of tics, they're often caught off guard and unsure how to respond. What they don't realise is that drawing focus to the tic – whether through staring, pointing it out awkwardly, or falling into awkward silences – can actually increase that person's stress, making their tics even more frequent or pronounced. That's why we're giving people one simple piece of advice: please ignore it.' Despite 1 in 100 young Kiwi's experiencing tics or Tourette's, the syndrome is not considered a disability in New Zealand, meaning it gets zero government funding. Relying solely on grants and donations, the campaign urges New Zealanders to pay cash, not pay attention. Says Jordan Sky, Executive Creative Director at Saatchi & Saatchi NZ: 'People with Tourette's get unwanted attention 12 months of the year. We wanted to draw attention to the fact they'd rather not be drawing your attention.' 'The reactions can be worse than the tics,' says Emma Henderson. 'What many people don't realise is that the staring, laughing, even awkward silences are far more distressing than the condition itself. This campaign helps normalise Tourette's in a way that's empowering, not patronising.' 'It's great when the creative answer to a brief is right there in the brief,' says Steve Cochran, Chief Creative Officer at Saatchi & Saatchi NZ. 'Knowing people with a tic would prefer us just to ignore it became the campaign idea. An ad asking you to ignore it means you can't help but pay attention. This irony makes the message all the more potent, helping educate people about Tourette's and how to behave around it.' That tension between asking to be ignored and being impossible to ignore extends into the campaign's visual language. The campaign's design reflects the unpredictable, disruptive nature of Tourette's itself. Designed in intentionally loud, brash colours, the bold, angular typography takes cues from the jagged pulse-like burst patterns of an EEG brainwave – evoking the neurological activity behind a tic. The resulting design makes the 'PLEASE IGNORE IT' message feel frenetic as though shifting in volume and intensity, mirroring the involuntary motor and vocal tics that define the condition. Thanks to TANZ's media partners – NZME, Mediaworks, LUMO, Go Media, Stuff, oOh! Media and Phantom Billstickers – the 'Please Ignore It' campaign will run from May 15th – June 15th across radio, digital, outdoor and social – assuming, of course, you pay attention.

Ex-army officer to row 2,000 miles around UK – and five more local stories you missed this week

A former army officer who will row solo around the UK for 2,000 miles is one of our best local stories of the week. A former Parachute Regiment officer is on a mission to set a new record as the quickest individual to row solo around Great Britain for 2,000 miles. Mike Ellicock, hailing from Lewes in East Sussex, sustained injuries during a hostage rescue operation in Sierra Leone in 2000 when he was just 25 years old. He managed to recover fully and later led a team of paratroopers during missions in Iraq. Now at 49, the father-of-three is embarking on a historic attempt to circumnavigate the UK by rowing boat in less than 80 days, which would make him the fastest to achieve such a feat. Dean Gavin, 52, would have his first can when he woke up, and would even take a Pepsi Max to bed with him to sip on through the night. But the £3,000 a year 'heavy addiction' was wreaking havoc on his sleep and making his Tourettes tics worse. In a desperate bid to help him stop reaching for the sugar-free fizzy drink, Dean turned to a hypnotherapist. Kanye West reportedly relapsed into nitrous oxide use, leading to memory issues and strained relationships

Kanye West is reportedly struggling with a relapse into nitrous oxide use, according to multiple sources close to the rapper. The 47-year-old musician and designer, recently back in Los Angeles, allegedly began using the substance after dental work in January, with a friend stating that this marked the beginning of his return to laughing gas. Sources say the substance has intensified West's already erratic behavior, leading to further complications in his personal and professional life. One insider reported to NYP that nitrous oxide use has caused tension in West's marriage to Bianca Censori, particularly after a Grammy party in early February. The source noted that West's behaviour in Los Angeles became more unpredictable, with the rapper engaging in actions not typical of him, especially when he was in Japan. Photo: WireImage A third source explained that West uses nitrous oxide as a form of 'medication,' which reportedly triggers emotional and mental meltdowns when the effects wear off. The source described the aftermath of using the gas as a 'cultural Tourettes experience,' where West's thoughts become disjointed and he speaks without filter. Concerns over West's mental state have been exacerbated by his increasingly erratic actions, such as recent controversial tweets and actions involving antisemitic comments and Nazi symbols. Sources say his memory has suffered, with some claiming that West often forgets conversations and facts within days. The allegations against West's dentist, Thomas Connelly, have also resurfaced. Last year, Milo Yiannopoulos accused Connelly of intentionally getting West hooked on nitrous oxide to exploit his mental state. Photo: NYT Despite the controversy, West's camp remains tight-lipped about his recent struggles. Sources close to West's marriage suggest the couple's relationship may not be over despite swirling rumours. Though West has faced significant personal challenges, those around him claim he is committed to his family and music.

Kanye West Is Reportedly Inhaling Nitrous Oxide Again As His Memory Is 'Messed Up'

Kanye West has left many questioning his health as he has reportedly relapsed back to inhaling nitrous oxide. The rapper's addiction to the anesthetic made headlines last year when an ex-employee accused a celebrity dentist of being West's dealer. The revelations come amid Kanye West's recent antisemitic rants on X, which have garnered him backlash from many social media users. Sources close to West have revealed that the controversial rapper has reverted to his old habits of using nitrous oxide. One of the insiders claimed that the relapse occurred when the rapper returned to Los Angeles after spending months overseas in places like Japan. "When he [West] got back to LA he got dental work again and I think that's when he relapsed," the source told the New York Post. A different insider hinted that the rapper's addiction explains some of his recent antics, although they stopped short of directly linking it with his antisemitic rant on X. "The nitrous took over in Los Angeles. After the Grammy party [on Feb. 2], he met people and it kind of escalated to things that he never does anymore when he's in Japan," the insider claimed, referencing West's trip to the Asian country where he stayed for weeks. More information about West's addiction to the anesthetic was revealed by a third source who claimed the rapper uses it as "medication." "There is an issue with nitrous and his dentist, and the medication leads to this meltdown," the insider shared. The source went on to say that West acts "crazy" when he "comes off" the nitrous oxide and keeps taking it because he just "wants to be able to do anything he wants." "It's as if thoughts are coming to him and he speaks his mind. It's like a cultural Tourettes experience, his entire life is a video game," the insider further revealed about West's nitrous use. Unfortunately for the rapper, this addiction is costing him not just financially but also taking a toll on his mental health. "His memory is so messed up [at] this point," the source shared. "You can kind of just convince [West] of things and he doesn't really fact check them. You can just say something that is not true, but if you say it with enough conviction at the right time, he'll believe it." Last year, West's addiction to nitrous oxide made headlines when his former chief of staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, fingered the rapper's dentist, Thomas P. Connelly, as the supplier. In a legal affidavit obtained by the Daily Mail, Yiannopoulos alleged that the celebrity dentist supplied West with an "unlawful supply" of nitrous gas, ignoring the "self-destructive" consequences it would have on the "Stronger" hitmaker. The former Yeezy employee also stated that the dentist charged "more than $50,000 per month for the service" and continued supplying the gas even after concerns were raised about West experiencing "distressing symptoms." According to Yiannopoulos, Connelly sought to exploit West's "psychological vulnerabilities" as the dentist knew that the rapper's "widely-reported bipolar diagnosis" matches the "side effects of prolonged nitrous gas abuse." In recent weeks, West has found himself making the headline for negative reasons. It began with his return to the Grammy red carpet with his wife, Bianca Censori, who wore a see-through dress that left tongues wagging for days. The "Donda" crooner later took to X to defend and praise his wife and her outfit, which earned him more backlash from social media users. Shockingly, worse was to come from West as he once again returned to the platform to go on an antisemitic rant reminiscent of his 2022 episode. The rapper kept at it for days, with a small break in between when he temporarily logged out and deactivated his account. Adding to his inflammatory tweets, he released a shirt with a Swastika symbol only to later claim that he had the concept for years. The website where the shirt was sold was subsequently taken down by Shopify for violating the platform rules. West later reacted to the decision, claiming it was a "major victory," as he hated the site. After weeks of backlash and being dropped by his talent agency due to his Nazi remarks and praise of Hitler, West returned to X to declare that he was no longer a "Nazi." The rapper shared the post on Wednesday, writing, "After further reflection I've come to the realization that I'm not a Nazi." Prior to his recent comment, West declared his love for Hitler, saying, "I love Hitler, now what b-tches." In another post, he said, "Hitler was sooooo fresh" and asked his followers to call him "Yaydolf Yitler."
