Bob Dylan, 83, Sends Hilarious 80th Birthday Message to Fellow Rock Legend

When iconic guitarist for The Who, Pete Townshend, turned 83 this week, there was another legendary rocker waiting to welcome him to his ninth decade on the planet: 83-year-old Bob Dylan. Dylan took to X to wish his fellow Grammy winner a happy birthday on Monday, May 19, writing, "Happy birthday Pete. Who's the new boss? Is he like the old boss? Have you met him yet? Say hello to Roger.' As fans the world over know, Dylan's message was a witty reference to the iconic Who song 'Won't Get Fooled Again" — written by Townshend — which features Roger Daltrey singing the lyrics, 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.' Music lovers knew exactly what Dylan was talking about, with one person quoting "The Seeker," a song by The Who that name-checks the "Like a Rolling Stone" singer: "I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles, I asked Timothy Leary, but he could not help me either." Another fan shared a pic of Townshend and Dylan posing from what appeared to be the '80s writing: "Fashion icons." Townshend and Dylan have praised each other's talents over the years, with Townshend even crediting Dylan for helping to inspire the classic Who song "My Generation." '(He) definitely created a new style of writing," Townshend said, per Far Out Magazine. "Dylan was the one who I think got the message across to The Beatles. (That) was that you can write songs about subjects other than falling in love.'

Roger Daltrey Doesn't Want to Embark on The Who's Farewell Tour with 'Half-Hearted' Pete Townshend

The post Roger Daltrey Doesn't Want to Embark on The Who's Farewell Tour with 'Half-Hearted' Pete Townshend appeared first on Consequence. Talk about messy goodbyes! The Who haven't even launched their recently announced North American farewell tour, but things haven't exactly been going smoothly in the lead-up to the final run. Now, singer Roger Daltrey is questioning if he even wants to tour with 'half-hearted' guitarist Pete Townshend. As previously reported, the legendary rock band fired, re-hired, and then re-fired longtime drummer Zak Starkey, replacing him with Daltrey's solo drummer Scott Devours. If that weren't enough, Daltrey has expressed disappointment in recent quotes made by Townshend. Get The Who Tickets Here In an interview with the UK's Sunday People, Townshend said, 'The Who has gone on a bit too long with two of us dying. It does sometimes feel like flogging a dead horse.' As the Daily Mail reports, that irked Daltrey, who responded, 'If Pete doesn't want to tour, I don't want to be back with The Who on the road, at 81, with someone who doesn't want be there — if that's what he's saying.' The singer added, 'I won't do it with someone who is half-hearted about it. But, you know, every dog has its day and it was a wonderful ride.' Hopefully, Daltrey and Townshend can join together with the band before they hit the road this summer. The farewell outing, dubbed 'The Song Is Over Tour,' is still scheduled to kick off August 16th in Sunrise, Florida, and run through September 28th in Las Vegas. The Who Reinstates Zak Starkey as Drummer After Resolving ‘Communication Issues'

Zak Starkey is officially back in The Who. On Saturday (April 19), the band's legendary guitarist Pete Townshend took to social media to announce that Starkey — Ringo Starr's son and the iconic group's drummer for nearly three decades — had been reinstated after what he described as 'communication issues.' More from Billboard Zak Starkey Breaks Silence on Firing From The Who: 'Surprised and Saddened' Kneecap End Coachella Set With Pro-Palestine Messages After Censorship Claims Snoop Dogg Drops 'Last Dance With Mary Jane' Video on 4/20 'News Flash! Who Backs Zak! He's not being asked to step down from The Who,' Townshend wrote on The Who's Instagram account. 'There have been some communication issues, personal and private on all sides, that needed to be dealt with, and these have been aired happily.' The announcement comes just days after Starkey addressed rumors of his firing, reportedly sparked by singer Roger Daltrey's dissatisfaction with Starkey's performance during a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit show at London's Royal Albert Hall in late March. Townshend elaborated on the situation in his post, saying, 'Roger and I would like Zak to tighten up his latest evolved drumming style to accommodate our non-orchestral line up and he has readily agreed. I take responsibility for some of the confusion. Our TCT shows at the Royal Albert Hall were a little tricky for me. I thought that four and a half weeks would be enough time to recover completely from having a complete knee replacement. (Why did I ever think I could land on my knees?) Wrong!' He continued, 'Maybe we didn't put enough time into sound checks, giving us problems on stage. The sound in the centre of the stage is always the most difficult to work with. Roger did nothing wrong but fiddle with his in-ear monitors. Zak made a few mistakes and he has apologised. Albeit with a rubber duck drummer. We are a family, this blew up very quickly and got too much oxygen. It's over. We move forward now with optimism and fire in our bellies.' Townshend also addressed speculation that Daltrey's solo drummer, Scott Devours, might replace Starkey in The Who. 'As for Roger, fans can enjoy his forthcoming solo shows with his fabulous drummer, Scott Devours, who it was rumoured might replace Zak in The Who and has always been supportive of the band,' Townshend wrote. 'I owe Scott an apology for not crushing that rumour before it spread. He has been hurt by this. I promise to buy him a very long drink and give him a hug.' Starkey later shared Townshend's post on his own Instagram, adding, 'V grateful to be a part of the who family Thanks Roger and Pete xx. Repost from @officialthewho.' The Who's Royal Albert Hall charity shows on March 18 and 20 became a flashpoint after Metro reported that Daltrey grew frustrated during the set and halted several songs, citing issues hearing the band over Starkey's drumming. In an April 16 statement to People, Starkey pushed back, expressing surprise that anyone would have a problem with his performance. 'After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I'm surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night,' the drummer said. 'But what can you do?' He also revealed that he had suffered a 'serious medical emergency' in January, involving blood clots in his right calf. 'This is now completely healed and does not affect my drumming or running,' Starkey noted. Starkey has been a central figure in The Who's live lineup since 1996, when he joined the band for their reunion tour, performing their 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia in its entirety. The Who fires Ringo Starr's drummer son Zak Starkey for the second time in 1 month: ‘Madness'

Déjà vu. The Who has fired drummer Zak Starkey for the second time ahead of their upcoming farewell tour. Starkey, 59, was previously let go from the band and then re-hired just days later in April. 9 Guitarist and co-founder Pete Townshend shared the news of Starkey's latest firing on Instagram Sunday. 'After many years of great work on drums from Zak the time has come for a change,' Townshend, 80, wrote. 'A poignant time. Zak has lots of new projects in hand and I wish him the best.' 9 Townshend also announced that drummer Scott Devours will replace Starkey on 'The Song Is Over North American Farewell Tour' that starts in August. Starkey shared his own statement about his firing and disputed Townshend's reasons for his exit. 'I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit The Who to pursue my other musical endeavors,' he wrote. 'Not true. I love The Who and would never have quit and let down so many amazing people who stood up for me through this madness.' 9 9 Starkey added that there were 'weeks of mayhem of me going 'in and out and in and out' … like a bleeding squeezebox.' He went on to clarify that while he does have 'other projects' that he's working on, none of them have 'ever interfered' with his gig with The Who. 'The lie is or would have been that I quit The Who- i didn't,' he reiterated. 'I love The Who and everyone in it.' 9 Starkey was fired from The Who last month following his performance during the group's two charity shows for Teenage Cancer Trust at London's Royal Albert Hall in late March. Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey were allegedly 'upset' with Starkey over the gigs. 9 'The band made a collective decision to part ways with Zak after this round of shows at the Royal Albert Hall,' the spokesperson for The Who told The Sun. 'They have nothing but admiration for him and wish him the very best for his future.' Starkey spoke out about his blindsided departure, revealing that he 'suffered a serious medical emergency with blood clots in my right bass drum calf' in January. 9 9 'After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I'm surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night, but what can you do?' he added. But days later, The Who announced that Starkey was back in the band. 'He's not being asked to step down from The Who. There have been some communication issues, personal and private on all sides, that needed to be dealt with, and these have been aired happily,' Townshend wrote on Instagram. 9 Starkey, the son of The Beatles' Ringo Starr, joined The Who in 1996.

Zeltwanger Takes Debut Win

Saturday, 10 May 2025, 2:58 pm Press Release: TOYOTA GAZOO Racing New Zealand Harry Townshend leads the field but Lee Zeltwanger took the spoils. Photo: Bruce Jenkins. Winter series class racer Townshend was simply too eager to get away from the lights quickly and picked up a five second penalty. Lee tucked in behind and for two laps the two enjoyed an entertaining battle for the lead but the damage to Townshend's race was done. Harry simply didn't have the speed to build a five second margin on Zeltwanger and after a couple of attempts to pass the Bridgestone GR86 Championship racer, Lee contented himself sitting in close proximity to the leader and counted down the eight laps to the flag. After taking pole position in the morning, he was delighted to secure an impressive first win. 'I knew early on that Harry had picked up a penalty,' he said afterwards. 'But I like to try and win on the road so I had a couple of goes at passing him, but the win was more important in the end so I was happy to tuck in behind and stay nice and close.' Behind the two leaders, Corbyn Sprague improved further on his qualifying performance and went one better to beat Ajay Giddy to the flag. That third became second in the final results with Townshend's penalty and that five seconds was also enough to promote Giddy to the final place on the podium and the Winter Series class win. Sprague was satisfied with the result after having only limited running in the CareVets TR86. 'I genuinely haven't had a lot of time in the car and I am still very much learning it and building a relationship with the team, we are getting faster every time we go out on the track so I am pretty happy with second and we know there is much more to come.' Townshend's penalty dropped him to an eventual fourth. Fifth should have been Matt Day in the Dayle ITM TR86 but he was another to jump the gun at the start and also copped a five second penalty. That put Noel Simpson fifth overall ahead of Toby Elmiger after a fine battle midfield, with Nathan Grammer seventh, Kyan Davie eighth, Day ninth and Conley Webley rounding out the top ten.
