Toyota will also discontinue its manual gearbox petrol version, making the Aygo X hybrid-only. The Japanese carmaker has found a great deal of popularity with its "A-segment" city car, selling nearly 300,000 since they were introduced in 2022. Now, its refreshed Aygo X could attract even more buyers with its 114bhp 1.5L petrol-electric hybrid setup - borrowed from the larger and more expensive Yaris and Yaris Cross. However, the design has been adapted from these other motors, due to the Aygo's tight dimnesions. For example, while battery cells are usually found parallel in the Yaris, the Aygo X will have them placed as two stacks alongside each other underneath the rear seats. The auxiliary battery will also be moved under the boot storage in order to not cramp the space inside the tiny motor. In terms of power, this new hybrid setup churns out a respectable 114bhp, far more than the 71bhp seen in the current Aygo. Toyota says this means the Aygo X will be able to go from 0-62mph in "less than 10 seconds". The new motor is also expected to boast fuel economy figures beyond 70mpg, reports Car Magazine. Vauxhall Mokka hybrid is a smarter, greener & better equipped version of old motor… but small detail really lets it down On top of this all, Toyota says the new Aygo X will have CO2 emissions of just 86g/km, the lowest of any car that does not need to be plugged in. The iconic Japanese carmaker has also claimed to have made the Aygo quieter and more comfortable through increased noise insulation, especially on the top-spec model - which will come with thicker glass. On its exterior, the updated Aygo X boasts new sharp LED headlights as well as a redesigned front bumper. The motor stretches 76mm longer than its predecessor, primarily to accommodate the larger hybrid powertrain. World's largest car maker hatching plans to invest £40 million in a new assembly line in UK The world's largest car maker is planning to invest a whopping £40million for a new assembly line in the UK. The Toyota plant at Burnaston could be in line for a major investment, as the company weighs moving production for the US market from Japan to Derbyshire. The car maker plans to invest around £41 million to set up a new production line dedicated to making GR Corollas, according to Reuters. Toyota has denied that Trump tariffs are behind the potential shift, despite taxes on Britain being 10 per cent compared to Japan's 25 per cent. In light of the potential move, Japanese automaker Toyota revealed that new cars could be added to the European market. Currently, the GR Corolla is only available in Japan and is exported to North America and select other markets. Burnaston plant currently produces the Corolla hatchback and estate for the UK and European markets, but production rates could significantly improve with the proposed investment. A new production line could be operational within 12 months, with reports suggesting that Japanese engineers may temporarily relocate to Derbyshire to assist with the transition. On top of a new bonnet, there is also an option to have a retractable canvas roof. If you're feeling like splashing out some more cash, there's also a newly introduced GR Sport trim level for the Aygo X, said to be "inspired by Toyota's motorsport teams". In the cabin, there aren't many changes to come with the update - although a new seven-inch digital instrument cluster has been added. There is also expected to be a new wireless smartphone charger for higher-spec cars. Prices and specifications have yet to be fully announced for the Aygo X, although experts have said to expect a "healthy increase" on top of the car's current starting price of £16,845.

New Toyota Aygo X 2026 preview: switch to hybrid power boosts performance and efficiency

There's more than meets the eye with the new 2026 Toyota Aygo X Hybrid, because what looks like a mild facelift of the current tiny SUV is actually a massive overhaul of the Japanese brand's most affordable car. Featuring all-new bonnet, wings, grille and front bumper, as well as a redesigned floor, the Aygo X adopts the running gear from the bigger Yaris Hybrid, which means the manual transmission is no more, with all versions now adopting Toyota's e-CVT automatic. As well as substantially more power, the Aygo X Hybrid should become Britain's lowest polluting car – if you ignore much more expensive plug-in hybrids – with emissions of just 86g/km of CO2. For performance fans, there will even be a GR Sport version with a special suspension tune from the team behind the white-hot GR Yaris. But all this tech and performance doesn't come cheap. Advertisement - Article continues below When the substantially refreshed Aygo X Hybrid arrives early in 2026, it's been tipped to no longer be quite as affordable as before – at least for cash buyers – with pricing set to move from around £16,000 to a figure closer to £19,000. That's a lot of money, but people purchasing it via leases or PCP deals might not see such a big hit, because the better residuals could take the sting out of the tail of the bigger asking price. The Toyota Aygo X Hybrid will come with just one powertrain, the Hybrid 115 engine used in the current fourth-generation Yaris Hybrid, which means Toyota's baby SUV should produce 114bhp and 144Nm of torque. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below In small car terms that's a huge boost over the current model's 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol, that can only muster a measly 71bhp and 93Nm of torque. Performance is unsurprisingly in another league for the electrified Aygo X, with the city car now able to accelerate from 0-62mph in around 10 seconds – a huge 4.9-second improvement over the outgoing car. The only catch is the old version's five-speed manual is no more, with the front-wheel-drive Aygo X Hybrid now only offered with the firm's e-CVT automatic transmission. Key specs Fuel type: Petrol Body style: 5-seater SUV Powertrain: 4cyl hybrid Price: £19,000 (Estimated) Toyota says it's too early to confirm how efficient the new Toyota Aygo X Hybrid will be, but the car-maker has admitted it has targeted emissions of around just 86g/km of CO2. Advertisement - Article continues below That figure roughly corresponds to fuel consumption that should hover around 67-70mpg – a big improvement over the 56.5mpg (109g/km of CO2) the current Aygo X averages with an automatic transmission. While still remaining relatively inexpensive to insure, the sizeable increase in performance and the new presence of the GR Sport version could see the Aygo X Hybrid sit in a higher insurance group than today's version that inhabits the lowly group five or six (out of 50). One final point worth mentioning for those shopping around for cars with the lowest environmental impact, the latest Aygo X Hybrid's carbon footprint has shrunken by as much as 18 per cent for the latest version, with new hybrid powertrain and mix of greener low-impact materials and cleaner production facility all contributing to the big reduction in lifetime CO2. Even Toyota Europe's technical chief Cesar Romero says that the car-maker "might have got a bit carried away" with the latest Aygo X Hybrid. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Ensuring it would continue to have 'enduring appeal' meant a switch to hybrid power, which posed a big issue for the car-maker. Despite pioneering the tech, Romero says the Toyota "doesn't do mild-hybrid" when it comes to small cars – and that's a problem. Advertisement - Article continues below Instead of starting from scratch, engineers decided to squeeze a larger 1.5-litre hybrid engine into a bay that is designed for a little 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit. This prompted an entirely new front end that sees the tiny SUV's nose stretched by 76mm. Most people won't notice the new metal, but designers say side-by-side you'll discover how the new headlamps, bonnet and grille all contribute to a visually more imposing, wider stance than before. Stylists have also added a set of fresh 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels. Like before, a two-tone colour scheme with a contrasting black roof and rear body, plus a new Mustard yellow colour for the GR Sport means you'll never lose the Aygo X Hybrid in a car park. A reconfigured centre console, meanwhile, has been introduced that features cooling for the batteries mounted under the rear seats. There's also an electronic parking brake as standard and two new USB-C charging ports, plus a wireless charger, Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Other useful additions include electric folding mirrors and Toyota's air quality -boosting particulate filter for the climate control, which will be offered on higher-grade models. For the first time there will be a Aygo X Hybrid GR Sport that has been developed in cooperation with the Toyota Gazoo Racing performance division. Advertisement - Article continues below Available in the aforementioned Mustard paint with a gloss black bonnet, the sportiest member of the Aygo X Hybrid family gets its own unique grille, GR Sport-specific 18-inch alloy wheels, GR branded seats and a dedicated suspension tune that involves, new springs, dampers and a recalibrated steering wheel. The old car's rear brake drums have also been swapped out for a set of more powerful disc brakes. The Aygo X Hybrid comes equipped with fresh in-car tech, including both a new seven-inch digital instrument cluster plus infotainment and heater control panel. Toyota has yet to detail what software the latest Aygo X Hybrid runs on, but it is likely to miss out on the most sophisticated Arene software that's just been rolled out on the all-new RAV4. Despite still offering just enough space for four adults, others in its city car class, including the Hyundai i10, still offer more space within. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Toyota says the Aygo X Hybrid still has a 231-litre boot, which means it again trails the i10 for luggage space – the Hyundai offers up to 252 litres of space. Worse still, the hybrid powertrain means that you no longer get the option of a space saver spare wheel. Dimensions Length: 3,776mm Width: 1,740mm Height: 1,525mm Wheelbase: 2,430mm Toyota has upgraded the Aygo X Hybrid with its latest Toyota Safety Sense driver assist tech that includes an upgraded autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition. There's also a new Emergency Driving Stop System that brings the car safely to a halt if it thinks the driver is not responding. Proactive Driving Assist is now included that will automatically steer away from an impact with another object if the driver doesn't react. For the first time on an Aygo X, over-the-air software updates ensure safety systems will be upgraded during the car's lifetime. Prices and full specifications will be released closer to the Toyota Aygo X Hybrid's launch in the first quarter of 2026, but the bigger powertrain, boosted performance and enhanced equipment and tech will all contribute to a price rise that could see the cheapest version's cost rise from around £16,000 to a price closer to £19,000. That sounds like a lot, but engineers claim that a huge amount of work has been done to boost refinement within and when you factor in the extra performance, the Aygo X Hybrid will deliver a claimed driving experience from the class above. 2026 Land Rover Defender updates look subtle, but they fix one huge annoyance for owners 2026 Land Rover Defender updates look subtle, but they fix one huge annoyance for owners Land Rover has introduced new, larger white-painted steel wheels for models with big brakes, fixing one massive irritation with the previous generatio… Electric car drivers won't ever go back to petrol or diesel Electric car drivers won't ever go back to petrol or diesel Editor Paul Barker thinks the EV transition is coming whether we like it or not Car Deal of the Day: Hit the road in style with the electric BMW i4 for only £344 a month Car Deal of the Day: Hit the road in style with the electric BMW i4 for only £344 a month It may be a little overlooked these days, but the i4 is still a fine electric saloon. New Toyota Aygo X JBL 2025 review: plenty of appeal but it comes at a cost

With so many manufacturers shying away from the city car market, the Toyota Aygo X is a refreshing option and one the Japanese brand is reassuringly investing in with the JBL special edition. It retains the simple, likeable approach of the regular car while adding a genuinely decent sound system - although, given the price, we're not sure if it matches the ethos of a budget city car. Advertisement - Article continues below If you wanted a big, shiny sound system in your car (from the factory, at least), you used to have to stump up the money for a car from an out-and-out premium brand like Mercedes or BMW, who have long partnered with the likes of Sennheiser and Harmon Kardon. Toyota is looking to prove these preconceptions wrong, however, because it's launched the new Aygo X JBL special edition. According to Toyota, this version of its entry-level car focuses on giving its owners a 'concert-style sound'. That's quite a bold claim when many of us know that even top-rung sound systems can struggle to replicate a live performance. It's worth remembering that an affordable city car teaming up with an audio firm is a path that has been trodden before. Volkswagen offered the 'Beats edition' of the up!, and more recently, in other markets in 2022, there was a 'La Prima by Bocelli' special edition of the all-electric Fiat 500e. This also had a JBL sound system, but the Fiat's was developed in partnership with iconic Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Instead of the 320W system in the 500, the Aygo X's set-up has a 300W power output and five speakers. There are two 'full-range speakers' in the front doors with 25mm tweeters in the front pillars. And under the boot floor you'll find a 200mm subwoofer, which Toyota says generates a 'powerful bass, dynamic speaker response and a clear sound'. The amplifier is mounted under the front passenger seat - with six channels that fine-tune the frequencies. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below View Aygo X View Aygo X View Aygo X View Aygo X That's a pretty impressive system for a car the size of the Aygo X. However, Toyota hasn't just slapped it into its tiny city car and called it a day. It might not have input from Bocelli, but Toyota says 'hundreds of hours of precision work and adjustments' went into the bespoke sound system for the Aygo X JBL. Start the Aygo X JBL special edition and you'll hear the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine as in the standard car with 71bhp and 93Nm of torque. Unlike some similar units from VW Group and Stellantis models, the Toyota engine is naturally aspirated and because it's coupled with a long-geared five-speed transmission, you have to rev it hard to make any significant progress. On the other hand, the engine is actually one of our favourite bits of the standard Aygo X. The busy little unit is communicative and responds well to the throttle while the engaging gearshift balances precision with smoothness. The car is light too, with a kerbweight of under a tonne, so that engine feels pretty well matched to the job in hand. Although a thrummy three-cylinder engine in a lightweight city car doesn't bode well for premium sound quality, the Aygo X JBL special edition is very good overall on that score. There's a punchiness to the subwoofer in the back, a clear sound throughout the cabin (even with no speakers in the rear doors) and no matter what kind of music you're listening to, it's pretty immersive. On the move the engine does interfere with the ambience a tad, given its penchant for revs, but tyre roar isn't too much of a problem because the Aygo X has narrow 175-section tyres. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Instead, wind noise is more of a factor when it comes to the kind of refinement you need to properly enjoy a car's sound system. At motorway speeds there's a bit of wash over the windscreen, though there's no extra sound deadening in the roof or doors - areas which we expect could have made a big difference to the overall sound quality. While the focus was on the car's audio experience, Toyota also says: 'JBL engineers prioritised weight-saving to contribute to the car's overall fuel efficiency and low tailpipe emissions', so don't expect the fancy new audio system to harm the Aygo X's frugal economy figures. Weighing just five kilograms more than the regular Aygo X, the JBL special edition returns a 57.9mpg average - 0.9mpg worse than the Exclusive variant. Putting the subwoofer in the rear also has an impact on the special edition's boot capacity. The standard car can accommodate 231 litres, but that figure is reduced to just 189 litres here. If you want to showcase the fact you're a bit of an audiophile in buying the Aygo X JBL special edition, then you'll be happy to note Toyota has added JBL branding on the seats, rear hatchback, tweeters and windows. It's not quite as eye-catching as the old VW up! Beats edition, which got exterior decals too, but the Toyota also gets a two-tone black paint matched with a new 'Jasmine Silver' body. Plus there are relatively large 18-inch alloy wheels as standard on this little runabout. The JBL special edition sits at the top of the Aygo X range, costing £21,195 – £1,450 more than the Exclusive. Given that you're really only getting a sound system and the odd badge for the extra outlay, it's difficult to make a case for the JBL model in the Aygo X range, especially when the entry-level £16,845 Pure edition seems to best represent the little Toyota's wallet-friendly attitude.
