Penang govt replaces aging fleet of cars to reduce maintenance costs

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has replaced its aging fleet with 15 new Toyota Camry 2.5V (AT) (CBU) cars to reduce rising maintenance costs, which currently average RM42,144 per vehicle. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that, as a matter of policy, vehicles for Exco members and senior officials are typically replaced every six years. The current fleet was purchased in 2019, following the initial replacement cycle that began in 2013. 'The older vehicles are still in use, primarily for carpooling among officers who require transportation. The vehicles are not being sold or left unused,' he said during his winding-up speech on the opening address by the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, at today's state legislative assembly. He added that the state government has spent nearly RM650,000 on maintaining these cars over their service period. Last Tuesday, Chow confirmed the procurement of 15 Toyota Camrys by the state government at a total cost of RM3.31 million, inclusive of sales tax and excise duties, equivalent to RM220,783 per unit. Ten are allocated to Exco members, three to former officials, and one each to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The vehicles were handed over on April 4.

Penang confirms RM3.3mil purchase of 15 new Camrys

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today confirmed the purchase of 15 new Toyota Camry (AT) (CBU) vehicles for use by his administration. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the state legislative assembly sitting here, Chow (DAP – Padang Kota) said the vehicles were acquired at a total cost of RM3.31 million. "Of the 15 cars, 10 are allocated for state executive council members, three for ex-officio members, and one each for the state legislative assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker. "The total purchase price is RM3.31 million, which averages out to about RM220,783 per vehicle. "The cars were delivered about two months ago," he said, adding that the previous fleet was now over five years old. Earlier, while debating the motion of thanks for Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib's speech during the opening of the sitting last Friday, Mohd Yusni Mat Piah (Pas – Penaga) had questioned the state government over the new purchases, especially in light of reports on the state's financial difficulties. "We see state executive councillors using new Toyota Camrys, yet this has not been reported publicly. "The state even received a RM100 million advance from the federal government to manage cash flow, and yet new vehicles have been procured. Can the state government provide clarification?" he asked. In August 2019, it was reported that the state government had also purchased 15 units of the Toyota Camry 2.5 CBU for official use, replacing the earlier CKD model. The decision to replace the older vehicles was made to reduce maintenance costs and for safety reasons.

Penang state officials receive new Toyota Camry fleet

GEORGE TOWN: All 15 official vehicles for Penang's state executive councillors and ex-officio members have been replaced with the latest Toyota Camry model. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the new fleet, costing RM3.311mil in total, was delivered in March. "The cars were delivered to 10 executive councillors and three ex-officio members: the state secretary, the deputy chief minister, and the state legal adviser, as well as the state assembly speaker and deputy speaker. "On average, each car cost RM220,783," he said at the state assembly on Tuesday (May 20). Chow noted that the previous vehicles, also Toyota Camrys, had been in service for over five years. The new ninth-generation Toyota Camry features a completely redesigned interior, refreshed exterior styling, and comes exclusively with hybrid powertrains. This marks a shift from the previous 2018–2024 models, which offered both petrol and hybrid options.
