Penang govt replaces aging fleet of cars to reduce maintenance costs
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that, as a matter of policy, vehicles for Exco members and senior officials are typically replaced every six years.
The current fleet was purchased in 2019, following the initial replacement cycle that began in 2013.
'The older vehicles are still in use, primarily for carpooling among officers who require transportation. The vehicles are not being sold or left unused,' he said during his winding-up speech on the opening address by the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, at today's state legislative assembly.
He added that the state government has spent nearly RM650,000 on maintaining these cars over their service period.
Last Tuesday, Chow confirmed the procurement of 15 Toyota Camrys by the state government at a total cost of RM3.31 million, inclusive of sales tax and excise duties, equivalent to RM220,783 per unit.
Ten are allocated to Exco members, three to former officials, and one each to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The vehicles were handed over on April 4.

PETALING JAYA: Klang Valley will likely remain the largest industrial hub in the country on the back of its relatively more mature industrial parks, infrastructure and strategic access to ports, according to Kenanga Research. Specifically on Johor, the research house gathered that its industrial and data centre boom commenced with the launch of YTL Green Data Centre Park in Kulai in August 2022. This kick-started interests by large multinationals in the state, further fuelling its investments into that space, it noted. The research house said with the officiation of Johor's Forest City Special Financial Zone in September 2024 and Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone in January 2025, in addition to the increase in cross-border activities with Singapore stemming from the upcoming launch of the Rapid Transit System link, it believes that activities and investments into the state could remain buoyant in the near-to-medium term. According to property consultancy company Knight Frank Malaysia, between 2020 and 2024, annual industrial transaction values in Klang Valley and Johor Baru (including Kulai) grew by an 18% and 40% four-year compounded annual growth rate, respectively. While this could be attributed to pent-up demand coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, it ties in with the increase of capital investments injected into the mentioned regions, Kenanga Research said. Kenanga Research believes Penang remains a hot spot for industrial activity, mostly dominated by the technology and semiconductor sectors. The brokerage recently co-organised a real estate event with Knight Frank on the property consultancy's exclusive launch of its half-yearly real estate highlights for the first half of 2025. Focusing on high-rise residential trends, Knight Frank highlighted that transaction volumes and values in Kuala Lumpur had picked up mostly in 2022, coming out of the pandemic. Knight Frank found it worth noting as well that the growth of average transaction values had outpaced volumes, reflecting a higher appetite by homebuyers for higher-priced homes. From Kenanga Research's checks among property developers and mortgage lenders, the pick-up in transaction volumes in 2022 could have been made up by more affordable offerings (RM300,000 to RM500,000) which led market launches at that time, owing to development being stalled by the movement control orders between 2020 and 2021. On the data centre front, there was a surge in data centre investments post-Covid-19, with total investment reaching RM160bil in 2024, more than triple the amount in 2023. However, the sector is now entering a more mature execution phase of announced plans, Knight Frank noted. In the first half of 2025, digital investments totalled RM42.6bil versus RM66.2bil in the similar period last year, with over 70% allocated to data centres and cloud infrastructure. While Johor continues to lead in data centre development, Klang Valley has also seen healthy activity.

Penang plans cable car link from Botanical Gardens to Gurney Bay
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has asked Hartasuma Sdn Bhd to study a proposed cable car route linking the Botanical Gardens to Gurney Bay. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the study is in its early stages, and the state will assess its viability. 'Gurney Bay is another iconic tourist attraction, therefore it makes sense to connect the Botanical Gardens with Gurney Bay via cable car as well.' He added that the 2.5-kilometre route could become a major tourism draw if feasible. Chow clarified that no final decision has been made on the implementing company yet. Hartasuma, a local rail industry expert, partnered with Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH for the Penang Hill cable car project. The Penang Hill project, awarded via a Public-Private Partnership, will transport 1,400 passengers hourly. The 2.73-kilometre route includes three stations: Garden Station, Turn Station, and Hill Station. A multi-storey car park and commercial plaza are also part of the development. – Bernama

Penang mulls second cable car link between Botanic Gardens and Gurney Bay
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has asked Hartasuma Sdn Bhd (Hartasuma) to conduct a feasibility study for a possible cable car project linking Penang Botanic Gardens and Gurney Bay. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the proposed link would provide another connection between the two major landmarks. "Penang Botanic Gardens and Gurney Bay are about 2.5km apart. "We want to see if it is feasible to have a cable car connection. "This will be a seamless one," he told newsmen here today. Chow said that Hartasuma, which is undertaking the ongoing Penang Hill cable car project, was not the concessionaire for this newly proposed link. "We are only asking them to conduct a study, and we will take it from there," he said. Chow was met after witnessing the signing ceremony for the financing facility of the Penang Hill cable car development between Hartasuma and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd (BPMB). The RM374.5 million financing facility represents a major step forward for the project as it moves towards full-scale construction. In April last year, Hartasuma, a leading Malaysian homegrown pioneer in the local rail industry with almost 30 years of experience, formally entered into a contract with Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH, a global market leader in ropeway engineering, for the much-anticipated Penang Hill cable car project. The Penang Hill cable car project was successfully awarded to Hartasuma through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) on a Design, Finance, Build, Operate and Transfer basis, as announced on Dec 14, 2022, with Doppelmayr providing the cable car system. In June last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the Penang Hill cable car project, marking a milestone in the state's efforts to enhance Penang's tourism infrastructure, improve connectivity and accessibility to Penang Hill, and transform it into a must-visit historic landmark.
