Toyota's New RAV4 is Set to Arrive Sooner Than Expected

Toyota's next-generation RAV4 is just around the corner, and while the brand is keeping things close to the chest, new teaser images and a confirmed reveal date of May 21 suggest the wait won't be long. The bestselling SUV in America is due for an update, and Toyota's playing it smart: expect evolutionary styling changes, enhanced hybrid performance, and an interior that borrows from the tech-forward Prius. Even though Toyota is branding this RAV4 as "all-new," it's really more of a heavy refresh. The SUV will continue riding on the same TNGA-K platform introduced with the fifth-gen model in 2018. Think of it like what Toyota just did with the new Camry — revamped looks and tech, but the bones remain the same. Under the hood, the next RAV4 is expected to stick with Toyota's proven 2.5-liter hybrid setup but with added power and better fuel efficiency. The base hybrid is expected to deliver around 225 hp in front-wheel drive and up to 232 hp with all-wheel drive, thanks to an additional rear-mounted motor. A plug-in hybrid version — likely a new take on the RAV4 Prime — will follow. There's also speculation about a fully electric model joining the lineup, possibly using an improved version of the TNGA-K platform, though Toyota hasn't confirmed those plans yet. One thing's clear: Toyota's betting big on hybrids over full electrics for now. Leaked photos from Toyota Europe give us a good look at the interior, and it's clear the next RAV4 is taking cues from the latest Prius. Expect a cleaner, more modern cabin featuring a freestanding digital instrument cluster and a prominent infotainment screen mounted high on the center stack. Toyota is also focusing on premium touches like better materials, wireless phone charging, and possibly even a head-up display. The redesigned center console hints at a more driver-centric layout, and while overall dimensions likely won't change much, the space should feel more upscale. Outside, the 2026 RAV4 leans into Toyota's new design language with wraparound LED daytime running lights, a squared-off grille, and subtle aerodynamic upgrades. The shape is still instantly recognizable, but the details are sharper. There's also talk of Toyota launching a more rugged TRD Pro trim, especially as Honda prepares to roll out a TrailSport version of the CR-V. With Toyota's off-road heritage and growing demand for adventure-ready SUVs, it would be a smart move. The RAV4's official debut is just days away, and Toyota fans won't have to wait long to see it on the road as sales are expected to begin this fall. Despite growing competition from Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, and others, the RAV4's blend of reliability, practicality, and hybrid efficiency continues to make it a powerhouse in the compact SUV segment. It may not be revolutionary, but the next RAV4 looks ready to hold its crown.

Toyota starts teasing new SUV rumoured to be the all-new RAV4

Despite being seven-year old, the RAV4 unseated the Ford F-150 to become the best-selling new vehicle in the United States in 2024. Although not named outright, the official teaser image by Toyota has already been hinted as being that of the all-new RAV4. Image: Toyota Toyota has released first teaser images of a new SUV it will debut on 21 May, without going into detail or indeed providing an actual exterior shot neither blacked-out or blurred. Released by both its North American and European divisions, the overhead shots provide no hints apart from what looks like to be fitting of a glass sunroof. Global top three best-seller According to several online publications though, the images preview that of the all-new generation RAV4 that officially became the third best-selling nameplate in the world last year with an offset of 1.02-million units. ALSO READ: Report claims current Toyota RAV4 continuing until 2025 Of this, 475 193 were sold in North America, which saw it dethrone the Ford F-150 for the title of best-selling new vehicle. First sighted undergoing testing in January this year, the sixth generation RAV4 will replace the current XA50 that debuted back in 2018 and subsequently as the rebadged Wildlander in China the following year, and in Europe in 2020 as the restyled Suzuki Across. Inside and out Spotted by in the initial spy shots, the RAV4 retains its boxy looks, but appears more upright and more reminiscent of the current Nissan X-Trail. Here's our first look at the next-generation Toyota RAV4. Even through the camo, we can see that the next-generation SUV will have a more upright look while incorporating design elements from the Toyota Crown Signia. — Motor1 (@Motor1com) January 28, 2025 According to the publication, it will, however, be styled to closely resemble the Crown Signia that replaced the slow-selling Venza, known in South Africa as the Lexus RX, in the United States last year. More intricately though, the Toyota Europe media site provided slightly details with the reveal of the newcomer's interior. Interior represents a huge departure from that of the old RAV4. Image: Toyota Europe Seemingly modelled on the all-electric bZ4X, the cabin boasts the same steering wheel, a box design for the digital instrument cluster binnacle, a deep recess on top of the latter for the Head-Up Display, and a freestanding touchscreen infotainment system. PHEV and hybrid expected Still utilising physical buttons on the steering wheel, the rest of the interior appears equally derived from the Tacoma bakkie, though as before, the RAV4 will continue to ride on a unibody platform seemingly set to be a revised version of the current TNGA-K. Current fifth generation RAV4 has been on-sale globally since 2018. Image: Toyota On the power front, the current hybrid and plug-in hybrid options will prevail, with the verdict still being out as to whether conventional petrol engines will be included. More soon With just over a week left before its reveal, expect Toyota to possibly provide a few more hints over the next few days. Toyota teases what could be new sixth-generation RAV4

Toyota Europe has shared teaser images of what is likely to be the new sixth-generation RAV4 before its official reveal on May 21. The mid-size SUV is an important vehicle for the Japanese carmaker and a strong seller in countries around the world. It's especially popular in the US where it last year dethroned the Ford F-150 as the best-selling vehicle. The fifth-generation RAV4 has been around since 2018 and though still capable is starting to lag behind some of its newer competitors. As such we can expect the next-generation model, probably to be built on Toyota's latest TNGA-K architecture, to debut with enhanced hybrid/plug-in hybrid powertrains offering better range, power and efficiency. Due to the vague nature of the images provided, we can't say much about the new RAV4's exterior design other than that the front-end, when viewed from above, is somewhat reminiscent of the fifth-generation Toyota Prius — no bad thing. The SUV's dashboard, on the other hand, is in plain view and shows a heavily digitised cockpit home to a large digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and generously sized free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. There's also a chunky new centre console with cupholders and a redesigned gear shifter. Toyota might drop a few more teaser images before next week's reveal but otherwise that's all we can tell you about the new RAV4 for the time being. Watch this space.

2026 Toyota RAV4 interior shown ahead of debut next week

Parts of the interior of the sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 have been revealed ahead of the crossover's debut on May 21. Overnight Toyota Europe published two photos, one showing the upper section of the dashboard and steering wheel, and the other revealing the centre console dividing the driver and passenger's seats. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. From the first photo we can see the dash panel has a chunkier design than today's car. Ahead of the driver is a steering wheel featuring squared-off spokes with larger buttons. The digital instrumentation screen does without a binnacle, and what looks to be a larger infotainment touchscreen stands clear in the middle of the dashboard. In the next photo we can see the centre stack flows directly into the centre tunnel. The rubberised rings for the climate control knobs have been ushered away, as has the traditional gear shifter, which has been replaced by a flick switch. The cupholders are now lined up along the spine of the car, and the central armrest, as well as the cubby bin beneath, look as though they extend further forward than before. We can also see new seat designs, and a new look for the door cards. The automaker has also issued a few shots of the exterior, but these only show the vehicle from long range and high above, so we're unable to make out any details. Thanks to spy photos we know the sixth-generation RAV4 will have a new front end with C-shaped headlights not dissimilar to the ones used on the latest Camry. Japanese media believe the rear end will feature full-width tail-lights. Although the door apertures look to be same, leaked images out of China indicate the outer sheet metal has been changed to incorporate more creases and folds. "We could sell 500,000 of those things [RAV4] a year if we could build them, so we do not want to mess up that formula," Toyota Motor North America product planning head Cooper Ericksen told Automotive News in July 2024. Up until the end of April, the RAV4 (17,610) is leading the Australian sales race, just ahead of the Ford Ranger (17,257) and Toyota HiLux (15,120). In the States, the RAV4 has usurped the Camry to become the country's leading passenger car. According to Good Car Bad Car, after the first quarter of 2025 the RAV4 (115,402) currently sits in third spot behind the Ford F-Series (190,389) and Chevrolet Silverado (129,714).
