Punjab Police claimed to have busted two international narco-trafficking cartels with the arrest of six drug smugglers, including a woman, and recovered 4 kg heroin, director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday. The accused have been identified as Vishal Singh, 23, of Guru Ki Wadali village in Amritsar, Didar Singh alias Kali, 50, of Jathaul village in Amritsar, Sevenbir Singh, 25, of Burj Sarai Amant Khan village in Tarn Taran, Harjit Singh, 38, alias Jita of Baba Deep Singh Colony in Amritsar, Jaj Singh, 19, of Mohalla Chetuan in Amritsar and Jasbir Kaur, 60, of Kapatgarh in Amritsar. The latter received heroin consignments and operated under the guise of livestock trade, he said. The DGP said the accused, Jasbir Kaur, is linked to infamous smuggler Ranjeet alias Cheeta's cartel and has links with both Indian and Pakistani smugglers. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said both modules were busted in an intel-led operation under the supervision of DCP City Jagjit Singh Walia, ADCP-2 Harpal Singh, ACP West Shivdarshan Singh led by Chheharta police station SHO Vinod Sharma. The CP said accused Sevenbir Singh was running the cartel in garb of sale/purchase of goats for the past five years from which he amassed wealth to build a large kothi in his village apart from other property. The accused had been receiving narcotic consignments through drones sent from across the international border. After retrieval he used to hide the contraband in his relatives' home and later distribute it through his associates. Two FIRs – one under Sections 21-C and 27A, and the other under Sections 21-C and 29 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act have been registered at the Chheharta police station.

Gutkha spitting at 100 kmph triggers crash in Chhattisgarh; 1 killed
A reckless act behind the wheel turned deadly in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district on Monday, after a speeding Toyota Innova crashed when its driver opened the door mid-drive to spit gutkha, reported the Times of India. The incident led to the death of a 31-year-old businessman and left three others injured, two of them critically. Fatal crash on Bilaspur-Raipur highway The accident occurred on the Bilaspur-Raipur highway when the driver, reportedly travelling at over 100 kmph, lost control of the vehicle while spitting gutkha. The Innova flipped multiple times, crashing into two vehicles and injuring an additional person. The deceased has been identified as Jackie Gehi, a cloth merchant from Chakarbhatha, located on the outskirts of Bilaspur. Police said Gehi had attended a late-night party on Sunday, June 1, and had called his friend Akash Chandani for a ride home. Chandani arrived with another friend, Pankaj Chhabra. Jackie sat in the back, while Pankaj occupied the front passenger seat. Door opened at high speed led to loss of control While driving at high speed, Akash allegedly opened the driver-side door to spit gutkha, which caused the vehicle to destabilise and flip violently. The car hit a divider, somersaulted several times, and collided with a stationary commercial vehicle before crashing into a Maruti Ertiga. The impact was so intense that all three occupants were ejected from the Innova. Jackie was flung into a roadside metal pole and sustained fatal injuries to his chest, head, and shoulders. He died on the spot. Akash and Pankaj suffered serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Chain collision injures another As the Innova continued to careen across the highway, it slammed into a parked commercial vehicle and then crashed into an Ertiga. The Ertiga driver, who was seated inside and had not yet started the engine, was also injured in the collision. CCTV footage captured the horrific sequence of events, showing the vehicle flipping across the road and a passenger being hurled into a pole. Police cordoned off the accident site and facilitated emergency medical aid for the injured. The mangled remains of the Innova were later cleared from the highway. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Samana parents protest and block bridge demanding further action fatal accident case; Samana witnesses shutdown again
Patiala: The grieving families of six schoolchildren killed in a horrific road crash earlier this month reignited protests on Friday, blocking a key road and demanding the arrest of all those alleged to be responsible for the tragedy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Joined by political leaders, farmer unions, and social organisations, the families staged a sit-in outside the tehsil complex in Samana before moving to the Bhakhra Bridge on the Samana-Patiala Road, bringing the town to a standstill for the second time since the May 7 accident. The crash involved a Toyota Innova ferrying schoolchildren that collided head-on with a tanker-loaded tipper truck. Five children aged between six and 12, along with the 45-year-old driver, died on the spot. A sixth child died the next day, while six others remain in hospital. Police have arrested two main accused — tipper driver Bhupinder Singh and truck owner Davinder Singh — and six others for allegedly sheltering the suspects. However, four additional accused — Aniket Singh, Randhir Singh (alleged operator of the truck), Nirmal Singh (Randhir's father), and Gurjeet Singh, a relative — remain on the run. On May 24, families submitted a memorandum to subdivisional magistrate (SDM) Richa Goel, warning of a complete city shutdown if no action was taken by May 28. Goel forwarded the memorandum to senior superintendent of police (SSP) Varun Sharma, who met with the families and pledged arrests by May 30. That deadline has now passed without further arrests. Outraged by the delay, the families resumed their protest with heightened momentum. Local leaders across party lines criticised the administration for its inaction and pledged continued support for the victims' families. The tragedy has sparked wider concerns over unsafe school transportation, poor road regulation, and the unmonitored movement of heavy mining vehicles on public roads. On May 8, the town observed a total shutdown as hundreds gathered to mourn the children at the cremation ground. With emotions still raw and public outrage mounting, the families vowed to continue their protest until all accused are brought to justice and meaningful reforms are enacted to prevent similar tragedies.
