Han's Modified Mazda RX-7 Just Sold for $1.2 Million at Auction
The heavily modified 1992 RX-7 from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift just set a record for Mazda road cars at auction. The hammer fell on a winning bid of more than $1.2 million at this year's Bonhams' Goodwood auction. This is twice the amount paid for the previous record-setter from the Fast and Furious movies—a 1994 Toyota Supra that sold for $550,000. In the pantheon of the Fast and Furious films, Tokyo Drift is a bit of a dark horse pick as the best of them. It barely features either of the original two leads, has plenty of corny dialogue, and the plot is a little thin. On the other hand, the behind-the-scenes stuntwork is great, Han Lue (portrayed by Sung Kang) is such a charismatic character that he'll overcome his on-screen death, and the cars are as cool as they come. At this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, one deep-pocketed fan voted for the third Fast and Furious movie with their wallet. Bonhams Hitting a staggering $1.2 million at the Bonhams auction, a 1992 Mazda RX-7 with bodywork by Veilside just became one of the most expensive Mazdas ever sold. Even a casual fan would recognize its black-and-orange paint as the hero car driven by Han in Tokyo Drift, and as one of only two said to have survived filming, it crossed the finish line just past the seven-figure mark. Veilside is a Japanese tuner notable for its aerodynamic kits, and it's something of a staple of the Fast and Furious movies. This RX-7 wears the company's Fortune widebody body kit, which added just shy of seven inches of extra width, along with a huge rear spoiler and massive side vents. It's almost unrecognizable as a third-generation RX-7 apart from the roofline. Bonhams Given that the third-gen RX-7, or FD, is arguably the prettiest sports car from the golden age of Japanese performance, this probably isn't one for the purists. But given the provenance as a hero car seen on screens all over the world, it's little surprise this example of unbridled mid-2000s tuning culture cracked the million-dollar mark. Purchased by the current seller and shipped to the U.K. in 2008, just two years after Tokyo Drift's release, it's said to have been carefully stored, driven sparingly, and checked over by a local rotary specialist before the sale. The record amount nearly doubles the price paid for a Fast and Furious movie car—a 1994 Toyota Supra from the first two films that hit $550,000 four years ago. Bonhams With a new Fast and Furious film on the way, as well as a live-action drifting movie from Sung Kang in the works, this tuned RX-7 might prove to be a new generation's Bullitt Mustang. Hopefully, the new owner shows it off a little more this time around. Han would approve. The Fast and Furious films are anything but serious - but they have done a lot for car culture
No, The Fast and the Furious films are objectively not very good. But I doubt that even the greats can claim to have had anywhere near as much of an impact on their subject matter. The Shawshank Redemption didn't result in wide-reaching prison reform and it has been largely forgotten that Star Wars was intended as an allegory for the Vietnam war. But would Toyota have reprised the Supra were it not for the original Fast and Furious film propelling it into the limelight? And would the original Dodge Charger be commanding such outrageous premiums today were it not for antihero Dominic Toretto's boast of his having 'so much torque, the chassis twisted off the line'? I'm quite unsure any of it would have happened were it not for these films' celebration of a certain car culture. The cars that feature in them – the first five films, at the very least – are protagonists in the same sense as the human characters, with distinct personalities and sub-stories. If any scene encapsulates the franchise's reverence for its four-wheeled cast members, it first film's duel between the freshly rebuilt Toyota Supra and a stunning Ferrari F355 Spider. It begins with friendly banter at a traffic light: hero Brian O'Connor, driving the Toyota, asks how much the Ferrari costs. Its driver outs himself as an arse, replying 'more than you can afford, pal', in that condescending tone reserved only for the worst kind of new-money moron. Toretto gives the order: 'Smoke him.' A dodgem ride of a duel ensues, the nuclear-orange Supra scything through traffic while angsty rock music blares in the background. It will raise a hair on even the most car-agnostic viewer, and the layman with no car knowledge can still revel in the underdog's decisive victory. It all served to legitimise an arm of car culture that was mocked and belittled for years. More broadly, it validated the notion that you can derive fun from the act of driving.

The Nissan Z Is Crushing the Toyota Supra With Triple Sales
The Nissan Z got off to a slow start, partly due to production delays and supply chain disruptions caused by the microchip shortage. Dealer markups didn't help either. But that's all in the past. In 2025, the rear-wheel-drive coupe is performing better than ever. Demand more than doubled in the first quarter, surging 108% to 1,635 units. For the first half of the year, deliveries jumped 160.1% to 3,789 cars. Meanwhile, the Toyota Supra is having a much tougher year. The BMW-engineered sports car racked up just 1,231 sales in the first six months of 2025. The number represents a 17.7% drop compared to the January–June 2024 period. Yes, the Z is outselling the Supra by a 3-to-1 margin. Looking ahead, Nissan won't have to worry about the Supra much longer. Photo by: Toyota Toyota is pulling the plug after the 2026 model year, with a Final Edition limited to 1,300 units. However, a sixth-generation model is already in the works , so the gap between generations is likely to be shorter than before. Enthusiasts in the U.S. certainly won't have to wait another two decades like they did between the Mk4 and Mk5. While the Z and Supra continue to lock horns, the Ford Mustang remains far ahead. Despite a 14.2% decline through June, the pony car still tallied 23,551 sales, more than four times the combined total of the Z and Supra. We haven't forgotten about Nissan's other performance car, the GT-R. Only 37 units were sold in the first half of the year, down 75.5%. That's hardly surprising, as U.S. production ended last October after the final Skyline Edition and Takumi Edition models. Japan closed its order books in late February, signaling the end of the R35. A new GT-R is planned, but it won't arrive anytime soon. If the radical Hyper Force concept is any indication, it could be fully electric. Toyota Supra's next chapter could include a Lexus sibling
TDT | agencies The Toyota Supra has long been a favourite among sports car enthusiasts around the globe. As the current-generation GR Supra approaches the end of its seven-year production run, Toyota has confirmed that a next-gen model is already in development. But fresh reports from Japan suggest the story might come with a twist — in the form of a Lexus counterpart. According to Japanese publication BestCar, Lexus may be planning its own version of the new Supra, potentially serving as a replacement for both the discontinued RC and the ageing LC models. While the upcoming GR Supra will stick to a traditional two-seat sports car layout, the Lexus variant is expected to adopt a 2+2 seating configuration, offering a more grand touring character. A convertible version is reportedly under consideration as well. To distinguish itself further, the Lexus model is likely to feature a more luxurious interior, in keeping with the brand's premium positioning. Both cars are expected to be powered by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a self-charging hybrid system. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via either an 8-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission, with a lightweight carbon fibre propeller shaft ensuring strength and efficiency. The next-generation Supra is anticipated to debut sometime in 2026 or 2027, with the Lexus version likely to follow shortly after.

Report: New Lexus Coupes To Be Based On Supra MKVI
Read the full story on The Auto Wire A new report claims the Toyota Supra MKVI, which is in development right now, will have a Lexus version. Supposedly, the new sports car will replace the already phased-out Lexus RC as well as the LC. While the former coupe has already been axed, the LC is rumored to be an interesting proposition and we can see why Toyota would make such a decision. After all, developing a sports car is expensive, especially in the current state of the auto industry. Getting the most bang for its buck is what the Japanese automaker does so very well. The quest to keep expenses down was what drove Toyota to work with BMW on the MKV Supra. That rankled quite a few enthusiasts who wanted a 'pure' Toyota. They obviously don't know much about the origin of the 2JZ-GTE. Anyway, the shocking report from Japanese enthusiast site Best Car Web about the next-gen Supra and Lexus coupes has another bomb in it: one engine option might be sourced from Mazda. We can already hear the howling, but this really isn't all that shocking to us. Long have the rumors been circulating that Toyota will acquire Mazda. The two have a manufacturing agreement and share technologies with each other. A turbocharged inline-four developed by Toyota is reportedly in the mix, but the inline-six for the MKVI Supra might come from Mazda. Maybe Toyota got sick of everyone whining about the MKV Supra really being a Bimmer? In another twist, Best Car Web says there's a chance there could be a Mazda version of the MKVI Supra. Mazda fans would probably love such a thing, although we think some will still whine like some Toyota enthusiasts. It sounds like a lot of things are up for consideration inside Toyota for the next-gen Supra. What the sports car will ultimately be like remains to be seen, but at least it's coming back and not being ended.
