Drivers being warned about blowing dust, blizzard conditions in Kansas
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Drivers in Kansas are urged to exercise caution on Tuesday and Wednesday. The KSN Storm Track 3 Weather team is already tracking a blowing dust warning for Wichita, Wallace, Logan and Greeley counties. The team is also following winter weather tonight, including blizzard conditions for parts of northwest and northcentral Kansas. KSN Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman says, 'travel will be treacherous – if not impossible.' Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Hileman urges drivers to plan accordingly, especially this afternoon, with the potential for more blowing dust and blizzard conditions tonight. Last week, Hileman was among the ones who worked on a fatal pileup on Interstate 70 caused by a severe dust storm in Sherman County. Eight people were killed in the incident, and it closed the highway for over a day. The National Weather Service has compiled some tips for driving if you get caught driving in a dust storm. If dense dust is observed blowing across or approaching a roadway, pull your vehicle off the pavement as far as possible, stop, turn off the lights, set the emergency brake, and take your foot off the brake pedal to be sure the tail lights are not illuminated. Don't enter the dust storm area if you can avoid it. If you can't pull off the roadway, proceed at a speed suitable for visibility, turn on lights and sound the horn occasionally. Use the painted center line to help guide you. Look for a safe place to pull off the roadway. Never stop on the traveled portion of the roadway. In the past, motorists driving in dust storms have pulled off the roadway, leaving lights on. Vehicles approaching from the rear and using the advance car's lights as a guide have inadvertently left the roadway and, in some instances, collided with the parked vehicle. Make sure all of your lights are off when you park off the roadway. Check for current road conditions and dial *47 if you need from the Kansas Highway Patrol. For more Kansas news, click here. Dangerous cold and heavy snow on the way
We start the new week with winter weather alerts as we anticipate our next winter storm. They will begin to go into effect this evening and will continue into early Wednesday morning. The bullseye where the heaviest snow totals are expected will be east of Wichita. Outside of the bullseye there will be a large swath of snow totaling 2″ to 4″. There will not be as much snow in extreme Southwest Kansas. Before heavy snow arrives tonight there will be a small chance that areas north of I-70 get skimmed by some light snow during the day. There will also be a lot more cloud cover today too. There will be a large spread in high temperatures. They will range from the teens to the low 50s, the coldest air will be to the north. Snow chances gradually rise through the evening. Overnight lows will be bitterly cold in the single digits and below zero. We will need to pack on the layers Tuesday morning as a northeast breeze makes it feel even colder. We will also need to pack our patience for the Tuesday morning commute. Snow will be widespread and heavy at times. Snow lasts through the day and the warmest it will get is the teens and single digits. Extreme cold alerts go into effect Tuesday evening. Wind chills through Thursday morning will be as low as -15 to -30. Snow tapers west to east through Tuesday evening. There could still be a few trailing snow showers during the night and into early Wednesday morning. It will take a while to get out of the freezer but temperatures will be able to get above freezing just in time for the weekend. Salina gearing up for impactful winter storm
SALINA, Kan. (KSNW) — The City of Salina is already preparing for the impacts of an impending winter storm. The KSN Storm Track 3 Weather team says the northern part of Kansas near Interstate 70 will receive a healthy 5-8 inches of snow. Areas south of I-70 will pick up from 2-5 inches of snow. Salina will start salting all roadways before the potential weather. The City asks that the public allow ample space when approaching salt trucks from behind. How to drive in the coming winter weather Last month, Salina experienced one of its largest snowfalls in history, which produced over a foot of snow. The snow even caused the county to issue a state of local disaster. The City says information on storm and snow removal operations will be posted on its website and Facebook 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
