As someone who frequently watched music videos on CMT while growing up, I'll never forget the first time I saw Miranda Lambert walking down a long winding road in her Mama Tried tank top, with her hoop earrings dangling alongside her messy long blonde hair, threatening her no-good-ex-boyfriend with a tin of kerosene in hand. I don't think I had ever seen anyone look so cool.
The music video for her hit song "Kerosene" became iconic, and teenage girls everywhere wanted to look as cool and pissed off as Lambert did. Since the song came out in 2005, the country singer's look was very reminiscent of the grungy-glam trend at the time with messy, wavy hair and smoky makeup. With a little bit of Texas added to it, of course.
Now, twenty years later, the country singer is celebrating the title track that helped launch her career. She released the album on vinyl for the first time and has been sharing fun mementos on social media from that time in her career, including a new take on the iconic "Kerosene" music video look.$31.99 at at
She even shared a video of her hairstylist Johnny recreating the look with a little modern twist. First of all, he uses three different hot tools to get the messy, lived in waves. First up is the Trademark Beauty Hair Waver, he also uses the Olivia Garden 1 Inch Curling Iron, and the 1/4 Hot Tools Curling Iron, which is incredibly hard to come by these days. So, I recommend the 1/2 Hot Tools Curling Iron, or the Hot & Hotter 1/4 Curling Iron to get the same kind of look. However, Johnny says the waver and a small curling iron should get the job done.
And to get the "Big 'ole Texas hair" as Lambert called it, Johnny mentioned using a volumizing product to prep your hair before. Then, curl a small piece of your hair with the 1/4-inch curling iron, wrap the top half of your hair one way around the iron, take it out, and wrap the bottom half of the same piece of hair the opposite way. Then, use your fingers to pull on the end of your hair a bit to let the curl fall out a little. Repeat this throughout the rest of your hair until you get the "Kerosene" look. Curling your hair this way creates a cool texture and gives a more natural and messy look. I'm assuming Johnny incorporates the Hair Waver every now and then to mix up the texture even more and create different style of waves all around her hair. Johnny also used the Oribe Dry Texture Spray and Oribe Beach Spray in Miranda's hair and gave it a bit of a zhuzh with his hands to make it even more messy. And don't forget to tease it to Jesus, y'all.
Lambert has been rocking this throwback look for all kinds of events recently and fans are obsessed.. You can get all of the products mentioned and join in on the "Kerosene" fun, or just because you simply love the look like I do.$89.00 at at at at at at
