Teenage girl killed after gunman shoots into Kansas City home
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police are investigating after a gunman shot into a Kansas City home Saturday night and killed a teenage girl. According to the Kansas City Police Department, at about 10 p.m., officers were called to the area of East 36th Street and Norton Avenue on reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they reported finding a teenage girl, later identified as 16-year-old Traelynn Sibley, unresponsive and suffering from one or multiple gunshot wounds. See the latest headlines in Kansas City and across Kansas, Missouri Emergency personnel were called to the scene and took Sibley to a hospital. She was pronounced dead by staff shortly after arriving. Preliminary investigations reveal that Sibley was inside the home when she was hit by gunfire from an unknown suspect (or suspects) outside. At this time, police do not have a suspect in custody; however, crime scene investigators and homicide detectives are canvassing the area and searching for evidence. Following Saturday night's tragic events, Mayor Quinton Lucas issued a statement Sunday morning regarding Sibley's death, as well as the violence rates in Kansas City. 'Each life taken by violence is a tragedy. This year has seen far too many tragedies claim the lives of women and girls, including last night's. Our hearts break for the passing of another teenage girl in our community and for all the lives and families affected by these preventable and cowardly acts,' he said. We will never stop fighting for a safer Kansas City for all.' Mayor Lucas added that Sibley's death marks the 100th homicide this year, a stat that Kansas City has reached for 33 of the last 40 years. ‘Turn yourself in': KC Mothers in Charge founder speaks on teen girl killed in shooting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department continues to search for the shooter who claimed the life of 16-year-old Traelynn Sibley over the weekend. Organizations like KC Mothers in Charge are calling for change and justice for the teen's family. The organization provides support services to family members of homicide victims. Teenage girl killed after gunman shoots into Kansas City home 'We can't live in our own homes and be safe or visit someone,' said Rosilyn Temple, founder of KC Mothers in Charge. 'Whatever the situation was, this little girl should still be here.' The 16-year-old was inside a house near 36th Street and Norton Avenue Saturday night when she was struck by gunfire. KCPD said the shots came from outside the home. 'I get the call, and I hear that she's 16 years old, that just angered me as a mother, how can you tell another mother that her child, her little girl, has been killed in a house where they should be safe,' Temple said. 'Why are we shooting up houses? Why do you think it's okay to commit drive-by shootings or walk-up [shootings]? However, you did it, you killed someone.' Temple was at the crime scene Saturday night. For years, she has been calling on the Kansas City community to put a stop to gun violence, and she is still spreading that same message. 'The community really needs to wake up; it is a problem,' she told FOX4. 'I have supported families when a young girl or young lady has been murdered in our community, and nothing's really been done. The community has not gotten angry enough to say, 'we're not going to allow this.' And I've been saying this for many years: it's a community problem.' Do something better than you did. You took her life, be strong enough to turn yourself in,' Temple said.
