The Camping Essential That Inspired Donald Glover's Collaboration with Moncler
At first, you might think that a collaboration between Moncler, a brand known for their down jackets, and Donald Glover's Gilga Farm – a creative retreat/operational farm in Ojai, California – might be a bit pointless: why would those living in or visiting the Golden State be in need of chilly-climate clothing?
And yet it's the Italian label's first ever product, the sleeping bag, that has inspired the rapper, actor, comedian and now, fashion designer.
'Functionality is key — it's something that connects the world of Gilga and Moncler, we both create for real-world usefulness,' he says in the collection notes. 'The sleeping bag is one of the first products Moncler ever made, which inspired our sleeping bag jacket, but also led to a collection of summer fits grounded in real value.'
Glover's interpretation of a Moncler staple is just one of the 11 collections dropping as part of this season's Genius arm – other notable guest designers are A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith and Edward Enninful –which nominates creatives to reinterpret the brand's iconic pieces through their lens.
Alongside the aforementioned sleeping bag jacket (which can be used as a literal, well... sleeping bag), Glover has whipped up a selection of pieces primed for a West Coast summer – and that includes gear for when the temperature drops, too.
Think: down jackets alongside workwear essentials, a dressier suede jacket as well as nylon ripstop windbreakers, garden hats and Glover's take on the Trailgrip Vela sandal. Pieces that could either see you through light hikes around the Big Sur as well as lunch meetings in San Francisco.
Throughout the collection, you'll see an emblem of Gilga in the form of an orange – one of the many fruit growing a the Ojai location – which also nods to the citrusy colour palette found within the collection. A refreshing addition to your wardrobe, we say.
